4 Ignatian Spirituality Workshop Ignatian spirituality is grounded in the conviction that God is active in our world. As the great Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote: "God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen, my pick, my paintbrush, my needle and my heart and my thoughts." The spiritual path laid out by Ignatius is a way of discerning God's presence in our everyday lives, and doing something about it. Discover how the practices and insights of Ignatian Spirituality - the Spiritual Exercises, discernment, Ignatian prayer, and the Daily Examen can help you find God right where you are. Join Jesuit seminarian R. J. Fichtinger, SJ, on 7:30 pm, Tuesday, October 20 in the Lounge for an introduction to this rich tradition and how it might help you in your prayer journey. Eucharist for the Sick or Homebound Contact Colleen: or ColleenLenord@gmail.com Infant/Toddler Care & Playgroup Childcare is available Sundays at the 10:00am Mass. 5 DOROTHY DAY: A RADICAL CATHOLIC FOR OUR TIMES Last July, our Nonviolent Peacemaking Group received an from Martha Hennessey, granddaughter of Dorothy Day, the co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. Martha indicated that she would like to speak at Newman Hall while she is in the Bay Area. Obviously, our group was ecstatic at the possibility of having Martha speak to our community. Over the last three years the movement to canonize Dorothy has grown substantially. In November, 2012 the U.S. bishops approved the advancement of the cause for canonization of Dorothy Day, the 20th century Catholic convert, pacifist and advocate for the poor. Like Paulist Father, Isaac Hecker, Day is currently considered a Servant of God, a title designated by the Vatican to indicate that it has no objections to her cause for canonization progressing. The bishops strongly approved the advancement of Day s cause in a voice vote. Discussion during the meeting included several bishops recounting their experiences meeting Day or attending her funeral. While Dorothy is famous for her "don't call me a saint, I don't wish to be dismissed that easily," we all too often forget that God's call to each and everyone one of us is to live our lives following God's daily invitation to us to commit our lives to living out the Gospel. Dorothy lived her life answering that call. Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago commented " Her solution to the injustices of capitalism was the works of mercy, noting Day s criticism of what she saw as the inherent totalitarianism of states. This is a message Pope Francis continues to remind us about on a regular basis. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Oct. 28 th from 7 to 9pm. You do not want to miss this opportunity to meet Dorothy's granddaughter and get some inside insights on Dorothy Day. - Kara Speltz, Nonviolent Peacemaking Group Dorothy Day Quotes: The greatest challenge of the day is: how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us? We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community. I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions. I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system. The final word is love.
