1 Volume 16 No. 7/8 July/August 2012 Eden UCC has been an Open and Affirming Church since We believe that all people are children of God; that persons of all ages, races, and sexual orientations are part of our increasingly diverse culture; and we welcome all persons into the full life and ministry of this church. Tel: Sunday Worship: 10:00 a.m. Church Office Hours: Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday: Closed Visit our church website: HASTA PRONTO COMPAÑEROS! I am not sure if my learning experience in seminary could have ever been better than this. I think Pacific School of Religion and the Graduate Theological Union are great theological settings, always progressive as well as academically challenging; but what is good theory without meaningful pastoral experience? My field education experience at Eden UCC grew from a course requirement to a full pastoral ministry, both in the congregation and in the community. I think that my experiences at PSR and Eden have entrusted me with a bigger challenge, as I have been called to serve as the Pastor of Iglesia Congregacional Unida in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is a part-time position which will be shared with another part-time position with New Mexico Conference of Churches as Program Director of New Mexico Faith Coalition for Immigrant Justice. My family and I feel quite excited about this new place where God is sending us, and at the same time there is a feeling of grief and loss because we have to leave this church. Although I will officially start in these new positions on Sept. 2, we have to leave student housing by Aug. 12. My last Sunday at Eden will be Aug. 5; however, as we say in Mexico, Hasta pronto compañeros! for this is not the last time that we will see each other. ~ Pedro Welcome to Eden! Eden is a diverse and growing church. At Eden, people of all ages and backgrounds join together to grow spiritually, do good in the world, and develop healing and nurturing relationships. At our church, you will not be told what to believe. We feel that the way we treat one another is more important than holding uniform beliefs. And, while the Bible is important to our faith, it is not the last word. We believe that God is Still Speaking through science, nature, personal experience, other faith traditions and more. On Sunday mornings, our church services and kids programs are open, friendly and innovative. Every week at Eden, you ll find all kinds of activities retreats, yoga classes, service projects, music programs, labyrinth walks, study groups to nurture mind, body, and spirit. At Eden, we are on a journey together to understand and live God s truth for our lives. Come and join us on the journey. Check out our website. Give us a call. Come by and see us. We look forward to welcoming you! Like us on Facebook: Eden United Church of Christ Follow us on

Need a Summer Break? Win a 2-night Cabin Vacation Jim and Lona Fryer have generously offered a two-night stay during August or Labor Day weekend at their cabin near Arnold, CA, in the lovely Sierra Mountains in order to inspire financial contributions to Eden Church. Donations in $5 increments toward this benefit for Eden Church will be gratefully received during coffee hour today and for the next two Sundays (Jul. 1 and 8). For additional information on the cabin, which has two bedrooms and a loft and sleeps up to 8 people, see Jim s display in Oliver Hall. You need not be present to win the prize. Summer Member- Sponsored Events On Sunday in Oliver Hall purchase your tickets for one (or all) of the three member-sponsored events happening this summer. Comida crew volunteers are now being recruited for two-hour shifts between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Jul. 11 and 25, and Aug. 8 and 22. Food will be shared from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., or when our cupboards are bare. Food bank volunteer opportunities come in numerous shapes and sizes and with flexible schedules. Volunteer application forms are available in the church office. Complete your form and drop it in Pastor Arlene s mailbox today. Persons wishing to make financial contributions to Comida para Cherryland should make checks payable to Eden United Church of Christ, and write food bank in the memo sections of their checks. Let s Do Lunch Hayward! Free lunches are available to all Cherryland area youth this summer, Mondays through Fridays, at Cherryland Park from noon to 1 p.m. This free meal program is offered under the auspices of Let s Do Lunch, Hayward! and is a collaborative effort involving the Kids Breakfast Club, the United States Department of Agriculture, Hayward Unified School District (HUSD), Cherryland PTA, and Eden United Church of Christ. For information about other free breakfast and lunch programs in the Eden area, see the poster in the narthex kiosk or check with Pedro Ramos Goycolea. AED Machine On Campus If you enter or exit the sanctuary from the east wing doors, take a look at our new AED machine. The AED machine was donated to the church by the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services office in partnership with the American Heart Association. The machine was installed and will be maintained, at no cost to the church, by Ice Safety Solutions. For more information please see Daniella Prym, Fred Dorn, or Liz Jobst. Rollout Eden s Welcome Mat at Castro Valley Pride Eden members have been East Bay Gay Prom greeters and Hayward Pride participants. We ve hosted Arlene and Stephanie's wedding, which was featured in the local papers. We have had a booth at Hayward Pride, and Arlene is a veteran of the CVHS Days of Diversity. This summer, we have yet another great way to showcase Eden s unique identity as an ONA and progressive church by staffing a booth at Castro Valley Pride. The event is a half-day fair in the senior parking lot at Castro Valley High School, and will be held 12 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jul. 17. We need 8 10 volunteers (2+ people per hour) to share the good news that there s a church like Eden right next door, and that the welcome mat is already out. Please let Stephanie Spencer know if you'd like to be part of Eden s CV Pride presence. Daniella and Our New AED Take a Lookilu and See What s New: Coming Attractions Mark Your Calendars!
