1 Volume 19 No. 12 The Chimes November 2015 Eden UCC has been an Open and Affirming Church since We believe that all people are children of God; that persons of all ages, races, and sexual orientations are part of our increasingly diverse culture; and we welcome all persons into the full life and ministry of this church. Tel: Sunday Worship: 10:00 a.m. Church Office Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday: Closed Visit our church website: Like us on Facebook: Eden United Church of Christ Follow us on WHAT WE LOVE Last month about 40 people attended our all-church strategic planning retreat. Our consultant, the Rev. John Wimberly, gave us a real work out most of us left a little tired, a little hungry, and wondering where our conversations would lead. One of the retreat exercises was to identify what we love most about Eden. As John put it, our strategic plan should be certain to preserve and strengthen what we love most about our church. In other words, our strategic plan should make Eden not less or different, but more Eden than ever. Typical of Eden s varied membership, our group of 40 generated a list of almost 30 things we love about Eden! The most frequently mentioned area, however, was our open, welcoming, and accepting spirit. Participants love being part of a church that is not only welcoming, but also profoundly respectful of each person s spiritual journey. For participants, this welcoming spirit made Eden feel like home, a place where family and friends gather and support each other. And many participants were very proud that this welcoming and accepting spirit included LGBT people and other people who have historically been discriminated against, as well as the respect and cooperation our church extends to people of other faiths. The second area that was most frequently loved by participants was Eden s outreach programs and work with our neighbors. Participants loved that we began a dialogue with our neighbors and that they have grown to see Eden as a place with which they have a helpful relationship. Participants were proud that Eden Church was making lives better through our outreach. In addition to these two major areas, many people love our programs, our governance, and our senior pastor. To see the complete list of loves, check out the Strategic Planning section of Eden s website. As the Strategic Planning Committee begins the process of drafting our plan s purpose and goals, we are keeping this list right in front of us. As the great Reformer Phillip Jacob Spener once said, If we can therefore awaken a fervent love among our Christians, first toward one another and then toward all men and put this love into practice, practically all that we desire will be accomplished. This year, when we light the candle of Love in our wreath, I pray it will remind us that love is the crux of all we do and all we will become. ~ Pastor Pepper Welcome to Eden! Eden is a diverse and growing church. At Eden, people of all ages and backgrounds join together to grow spiritually, do good in the world, and develop healing and nurturing relationships. At our church, you will not be told what to believe. We feel that the way we treat one another is more important than holding uniform beliefs. And, while the Bible is important to our faith, it is not the last word. We believe that God is Still Speaking through science, nature, personal experience, other faith traditions and more. On Sunday mornings, our church services and kids programs are open, friendly and innovative. Every week at Eden, you ll find all kinds of activities retreats, yoga classes, service projects, music programs, labyrinth walks, study groups to nurture mind, body, and spirit. At Eden, we are on a journey together to understand and live God s truth for our lives. Come and join us on the journey. Check out our website. Give us a call. Come by and see us. We look forward to welcoming you!

The draft prepared by the SPT will be shared for comment and discussion with Church Council at their January meeting. In addition, the whole Church will be asked to comment and discuss the draft through a series of focus groups on Sunday, Jan 10. Comments will also be collected from the Cherryland community leaders on Jan 15. If you would like information about the planning process, contact Pepper Swanson. 3 The Chimes Volume 19 No. 12 Page 3 Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda 2015 Bay Association Meeting Cherryland School Planning Forum Holiday Decorating & Nacimiento Creation, Nov 28 It s hard to believe, but the season is just around the corner, and it s almost time for evergreen wreaths and garlands, trumpeting angels, twinkling lights, and lots of shepherds, magi, and little holy families. Please join the deacons and our Cherryland friends and neighbors on Sat, Nov 28, from 10 am 1 pm, for a fun time adorning the church for the holiday season, kids crafts for the holidays, and creating our annual Nacimiento. Many hands make light work! A light lunch and holiday tunes will be provided. Please see Deacons Mary Haro or Carol Price, or Compañeras/os Coordinator Corina Vasaure for more information. And the Winner is The Jakes vs. Jennys Food Drive competition is ending soon! The Eden Youth (Grades 7-12) will count the collected canned and boxed food on Sunday, Nov 22. There will be a Pizza Party for the winning team on Sunday, Dec 6! Take a Lookilu and See What s New! Christmas Cards to Japan This year, Eden Church is sending a Christmas card and lifting up prayers for the Natori Church of Natori, Japan and for the Aizu Radiation Information Center. Natori is a suburb south of Sendai, Japan, located quite close to the Sendai Airport, which was devastated by the tsunami. Although the church was not hit, church members lost their lives, as well as homes in the great disaster. Many people have come to live in temporary shelters in the city of Natori, and the Natori Church tries to minister to those in need. Natori is a very conservative area, and many people have a closed mind toward Christianity. Despite this, church members have been able to reach out to people in the area and create many children s programs. The Aizu Radiation Information Center is housed at a local Kyodan church in the town of Aizu-Wakamatsu (Fukushima Prefecture). The Center is a citizen s network fully supported by volunteers which aims to 1) gather and share information; 2) support local residents by networking; and 3) join in actions of solidarity with victims in the Fukushima Nuclear Plant disaster area. For further information about the Christmas Card project, contact Dianne Dorn. Christmas Pageant, Dec 13 Singing and speaking roles for children and adults are still available for this year s Christmas pageant. Practice for children & youth will be on Sunday, Nov 22 (after worship), Sunday, Nov 29 (during Church School), and Sunday, Dec 6 (after worship). Adults interested in singing in the pageant with our choir should contact either Sara Mellas or Pepper Swanson. Happy Birthday Jesus Celebration, Dec 13 Our annual birthday party for Jesus will happen on Sunday, Dec 13, following the Christmas pageant during worship. To celebrate, the Fellowship Committee will provide a light lunch and cake. Three Kings/Tres Reyes Gift Collection, Dec 20 Help us bring big smiles to the children of Eden Church with art supplies! This year, instead of toys, the Spirit-in-Action and Compañeras/os Ministry Program wants to give art supplies to the children so they can create beautiful masterpieces! We would like to give each child an art supply set that would include an 8 1/2 x 11 drawing pad, a Crayola color pencil set (10-12ct), and Crayola washable marker set (10ct). The gifts will be given to the children who visit for Three Kings/Tres Reyes on Jan 3. Please consider donating sketch books/drawing pads, color pencils, and washable markers, or making financial donation to purchase these needed art supplies. If your friends ask you how they can help, please encourage them to give art supplies for Three Kings/Tres Reyes. Please bring your donations by Dec 20. If you have any questions, please contact Corina Vasaure. Seekers The Seekers, a weekly book discussion group, are reading A People s History of Christianity: The Other Side of the Story by Diana Butler Bass.
