1 Volume 20 No. 2 The Chimes February 2016 Eden UCC has been an Open and Affirming Church since We believe that all people are children of God; that persons of all ages, races, and sexual orientations are part of our increasingly diverse culture; and we welcome all persons into the full life and ministry of this church. Tel: Sunday Worship: 10:00 a.m. Church Office Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday: Closed Visit our church website: Like us on Facebook: Eden United Church of Christ Follow us on YOU RE (NOT JUST) WELCOME! Not too long ago, a Lutheran church in Colorado announced that they had decided to quit being a welcoming church. Their pastor wrote a long blog post, saying that despite the amazing amount of time and energy they had put into becoming a welcoming church by redoing their worship, training ushers and greeters, putting their friendliest people to work in hospitality, they were no longer going to consider themselves welcoming. Why? They realized they had been misplacing their emphasis and needed a new focus. Their biggest insight was that welcoming was, at best, a passive approach. Being welcoming meant they waited for visitors and guests to drop by their church and, then (and only then) they were as kind and encouraging as possible. Being welcoming meant hoping that the folks who dropped in would come back again. And, most of the time, being welcoming meant being a little disappointed and a little self-defensive when it turned out they weren t someone s cup of religious tea. Their solution? They made a commitment to being an inviting church. As their pastor wrote, Inviting is different. That means we leave the comfort of our congregational home-court advantage. The main activity doesn t happen in our worship space when people drop in, but in the neighborhood when we go out. It isn t so much welcoming them into our place, but going out into their place and meeting them there. Underneath their decision to forego the welcoming moniker in favor of embracing the invitational spirit was another important shift. They gave up thinking of other people as potential members and donors to be secured and started thinking of them as, well, the very people God was calling them to join. In other words, the new spirit required a complete flip in their evangelism: it wasn t about getting the world into God s church but about getting the church into God s world. In her new book, Grounded: Finding God in the World, Diana Butler Bass says that the real problem confronting declining mainline churches is that more and more people find God in the world around them, rather than believe in a God found only in heaven or in a church building. To connect with modern spirituality, Bass says, people in churches need to take their warm and welcoming spirit out into their neighborhoods and communities. With Lent, our annual 40-day pilgrimage with Jesus from Nazareth to Jerusalem approaching in February, I find myself thinking: If God and Jesus are in the world, that s where I want to be too. ~ Pastor Pepper Welcome to Eden! Eden is a diverse and growing church. At Eden, people of all ages and backgrounds join together to grow spiritually, do good in the world, and develop healing and nurturing relationships. At our church, you will not be told what to believe. We feel that the way we treat one another is more important than holding uniform beliefs. And, while the Bible is important to our faith, it is not the last word. We believe that God is Still Speaking through science, nature, personal experience, other faith traditions and more. On Sunday mornings, our church services and kids programs are open, friendly and innovative. Every week at Eden, you ll find all kinds of activities retreats, yoga classes, service projects, music programs, labyrinth walks, study groups to nurture mind, body, and spirit. At Eden, we are on a journey together to understand and live God s truth for our lives. Come and join us on the journey. Check out our website. Give us a call. Come by and see us. We look forward to welcoming you!

Sandhya Jha Rubi and Diana at Strategic Planning Meeting Strategic Planning Update Over 40 Eden Church members participated in the Jan 10 Strategic Planning Team (SPT) Focus Groups. Members of the SPT presented the Draft Purpose and Goals prepared from input received at the All-Church Strategic Planning Retreat in late October. Focus Group members commented on what they did and didn t like about the Draft and what they thought was missing. On Friday, Jan 15, Cherryland community leaders also reviewed the draft and provided input. On Feb 2, a joint Council & Trustees meeting is planned to consider the financial resources to support implementation of the new Strategic Plan. The meeting begins at 7 pm in the Norberg Room and all church members are welcome. In the next phase of the SPT s work, the Draft Purpose & Goals will be revised on Feb 14 at 11:30 am in the Norberg Room and shared with Council on Mar 1. Later in March, the SPT will begin drafting specific strategies to implement the new plan s goals. Another round of Focus Groups to review the draft Strategies will be on Sunday, Apr 17, following worship. Please save the dates and plan to participate in this important review process! For more information, contact Pastor Pepper. Lenten All-Church Book Read Lent, the 40-day period before Easter, is a time for reflection, confession, and prayer; a time to explore where we have been and what and where God is calling us now. In the year 2015, America s attention has been drawn again and again to issues and events related to race, racism, and racial equality. As people of faith, we are challenged to see, to understand and to respond. To aid us, the Northern California and Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ has recommended several books on race and race relations and is encouraging church members, especially those attending this year s Annual Gathering, to read at least one of the books. Eden Church is taking up the challenge and has selected one of the books for a Lenten All-Church Book Read. The book, Pre-Post Racial America: Spiritual Stories From the Front Lines, is written by the Rev. Sandhya Rani Jha, who is director of the Oakland peace center, an anti-racism/anti-oppression trainer, and a director of interfaith programs for East Bay Housing Organization. The book looks at issues of race, racial justice, and racism from multiple perspectives and from Rev. Jha s personal perspective on the complexities we face today in countering racism. The book is available in paperback or Kindle version on Amazon. Ten copies are also available to borrow from the Church Office. Two book discussion groups and an author talk are planned for Lent. Seekers will discuss the book on Wednesdays at 10 am in the Community Room on Feb 10, 17, & 24 and Mar 2, 9, & 16. A second group, hosted by Bob & Alliene Turner, will meet on four consecutive Sundays in Lent in the Fireside Room for a soup potluck and book discussion. This group will meet at 6 pm on Feb 21 & 28, Mar 6, 13, & 20 in Oliver Hall. In keeping with our Lenten spiritual practices, the potluck will be limited to soup and bread. If you can contribute soup, please bring it hot in your own crockpot. For additional information about the soup potluck, please contact Bob & Alliene Turner. And, on Sunday, Mar 20 at 6 pm in Oliver Hall, Rev. Jha will give an author talk and answer questions about the book. This author talk is open to everyone and will be the final Lenten Soup Potluck of the series.
