Dr. Arlene K. Nehring Eden Church continued to live boldly into the vision adopted at our 151 st Annual Meeting on June 25, Key examples follow: The Rev. Pepper Swanson was elected to serve as Eden s Associate Minister at the 152 nd Annual Meeting. We adopted a Sanctuary Resolution affirming Eden s continued commitment to engage in education about and advocacy for immigration policy reform, and to offer accompaniment for immigrants, asylum seekers, asylees, and refugees. The search for a Designated Term Associate Minister for Youth, Young Adults, and Young Families was launched at the 152 nd Annual Meeting, and a Search Committee was appointed by the Church Council in August The Rev. Marvin Lance Wiser was elected Designated Term Associate Minister for Youth, Young Adults, and Young Families on February 4, The Church Council adopted a new Investment Policy and engaged Graystone Consulting, a Morgan Stanley business, to manage 75% of the Church s endowment. This change in policy and managers is expected to result in an increase in revenue of approximately $100K per year. The Oliver Salt Plant and Ponds were sold by the Trustee and proceeds were distributed and received in the fall of All proceeds have been invested in the Morgan Stanley portfolio. We responded to two institutional partners request for help in creating housing solutions for 1) unaccompanied minors in the Hayward Unified School District and 2) an asylum-seeking family from Nicaragua. The Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) voted to merge with La Familia Counseling Services, effective Jul 1, Though we are an old institution by West Coast standards, it is exhilarating to be part of the revitalization of Eden s mission and on the cutting edge of social justice ministries in our community, denomination, and nation. To God be the glory.

Annual Report Page 2 MODERATOR S REPORT Keith Smith, Moderator The year has been a year for moving forward and reaping the rewards of our hard work. In following one of the pillars from our strategic plan, we embarked on a search for a Designated Term Associate Minister (DTAM) to help grow our congregation. The DTAM search committee put out a call and was blessed to have Rev. Marvin Wiser and his family join Eden in June of With a focus on youth and younger families, experience in social media and a fluency in Spanish, Marvin is a welcome addition to our hard-working ministerial team. Another great change was the sale of the last parcel of land in the Oliver Estate. The sale of the Salt Plants and Ponds has been in the works for many years, with several starts and stop, but as of fall 2017 the land was sold and the proceeds have been incorporated into Eden s financial portfolio. Keith Smith This has been a successful year for Eden and with God s blessings we will continue to move forward. TREASURER S REPORT The Rev. Rob Parrish, Treasurer Eden Church s financial position remains good. The available cash holdings have increased from $1,660,198 as of May 31, 2017 to a total of $3,028,157 as of May 31, 2018, $1,352,498 of which came from the sale of the Oliver Salt Plant and Ponds and is now available for use as we move forward in accordance with the Strategic Plan. Eden Church invested the sale proceeds along with some additional funds (formerly invested at Fidelity, Cornerstone Funds, and United Church Funds) at Graystone Consulting, a Morgan Stanley business, under the management of Brian Sharpes, who also manages the Eden Area Foundation endowment. The Eden Area Foundation grants to the Church remained unchanged from levels. Rental income has increased a modest amount this past year. Member contributions have not kept up with our five-year projections. Efforts to increase the size of the congregation will continue to be our focus in the coming months. Rob Parrish For , Council is proposing an Operating Budget of $771,426 and a resulting income shortfall of $183,677 (six percent of Eden s total cash and investment holdings). Council is also proposing using funds from the Oliver Property sales to cover this shortfall for , pending congregational approval. The strategic plan approved last year along with our investment policy guiding the strategy at Morgan Stanley will allow Eden Church to maintain the programs as outlined in the expenditure plan for and for several years to come. We will continue to evaluate carefully our financial position through the coming year in order to maintain a solid financial footing that supports the growth that we are all hopeful will materialize through the adoption of the Strategic Plan. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with me at any time.

Annual Report Page 3 BOARD OF TRUSTEES REPORT Jim Fryer & Bob Turner, Co-Chairs The Board of Trustees oversees Eden Church s tenant and rental agreements, property and general liability insurance policies, and the construction, repair and maintenance contracts on behalf of the Church Council. We are happy to report that, after a period of uncertainty, FESCO offices will continue to be housed at Eden under the umbrella of La Familia Counseling Services. The Trustees also perform minor repairs, secure the campus after worship, and respond to alarm notices. This past year the Trustees worked on the following projects: Prepared rooms for new DTAM Associate Minister, the Rev. Marvin Lance Wiser, and for our Associate Minister, the Rev. Pepper Swanson, Associate Minister Since called as your Associate Minister last June, my focus has continued on religious education & spiritual life, safe congregation compliance and childcare personnel, communications, evangelism, fellowship, stewardship, worship, and pastoral care. It s been my pleasure to facilitate our ESLO committee, as well as our Evangelism, Education & Spiritual Life, Fellowship, and Stewardship, teams in completing their annual work plan and organizing special events, summaries of which you can find in other parts of this report. Highlights from our safe congregation compliance include the completion of two Safe Congregation trainings this spring, which resulted in the training or renewal of training for 32 employees and volunteers. Pepper Swanson On the communications front, we successfully transitioned from a mailed paper Chimes to an electronic version, which is delivered via Constant Contact monthly. We updated our Church directory, including new photos of some members. And with this Annual Report, we have moved the production of our Annual Report in-house. We continue to post events and other information on Facebook (Eden United Church of Christ) and Twitter (@21455Birch) and to have an active online presence sharing information with members and friends. I was pleased to preach thirteen times and to coordinate the Christmas Pageant and the Maundy Thursday service, as well as to serve as a worship leader for our Sunday services. Preaching continues to be the heart of my ministry. Last but not least, I supported our pastoral care program by being on-call when Pastor Arlene travelled for vacation or study.

Annual Report Page 4 COMPAÑERAS/OS MINISTRY REPORT Andrea Orea, Compañeras/os Ministry Coordinator Eden Church established the Compañeras/os Ministry in Our ministry plan is grounded in the congregation s Mission, Vision, and Values. Together with community members and friends, we strive to reduce violence by investing in Eden Area youth; contributing to economic development in Cherryland; advocating for immigration policy reform; creating and implementing cultural integration opportunities for our congregation and community; and promoting community and public health partnerships. Significant accomplishments in the past year included: Hosted workshops whose aim was to address the trauma created by the immigration climate in our country. Participants were able to engage in group conversations and receive tips on how to deal with anxiety and stress. Constructed an All Saints/Dia de los Muertos altar and a Nacimiento in the Church narthex. Comida Para Cherryland celebrated its 6th anniversary and gave away food for 200 families each month as well as backpacks with school supplies, books, gloves, scarves, and toys throughout the year. During our holiday months, we raffled off turkeys and other goods. The sixth Cherryland Youth Leadership Institute (ChYLI) was held during the summer. Participants visited the State Capitol and met with Congressman Eric Swalwell and Assemblymember Bill Quirk. Co-hosted, with ESLO, Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) and Tres Reyes Fiesta. (Three Kings Day) Participated in the South County Unaccompanied Minors & Migrant Families Collaborative. Continued advocacy with Cherryland parents for the successful implementation of Measure L. Attended meeting for updates on the process and continued to advocate for a K-8 school option. Collaborated with Cherryland parents to support the resolution to make the City of Hayward a Sanctuary City. Helped organize a town hall meeting to hear the community s concerns regarding the proposed transition of the REACH Center s management from ACHCSA to ACSO. Continued to offer the Cherryland Computer Café to provide access to computers and the internet. 5 Annual Report Page 5 MUSIC REPORT Dr. Jessie Wenchieh Lo, Music Director The music program offered a variety of musical styles and included many fine musicians. Each month had a different focus with regard to musical style: Traditional, Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, and Gospel. The highlights included: Jessie Lo Throughout the year: Eden Choir has led and supported the congregation by singing in every service. The choir performed anthems on a bi-weekly basis throughout the year, with the climax in Dec, during which they sang multiple anthems every week. On Sundays, the choir has consistently held rehearsals in the morning at 9 am and 11:30 am. Charlie Smith continues to be our Sunday cantor. Bluegrass Music: Roanoke Revival opened a great year of music on Welcome Back Sunday on Sept 17. Featuring Daniel Price on banjo, Sabrina Vasquez as singer, and Jesse Acker-Johnson on rhythm guitar, Roanoke Revival brought uplifting bluegrass music to Eden at five services throughout the year (thanks to an anonymous donor for supporting two more services than budgeted). Guitar Music: Dr. Jesse Acker-Johnson performed beautiful Bach and French guitar music for our All Saints service on Nov 5, peaceful serenades on Christmas Eve, and Spanish guitar music for our Tres Reyes (Three Kings Day) service. Charlie Smith Cantors Mt. Eden HIgh School Choir Choral Music: Mt. Eden High School Choir performed their Christmas Concert at Eden and returned in May to play for our Stewardship Sunday worship. Youth Music: The youth and young children sang Flower of the Holy Night together at the end of the Christmas Pageant and Miles Vetrovec sang Ave Maria on Bravo Sunday. Taize Music: Eden s own musicians Cindy Keune, Frank Jensen, and the choir played meditative Taize music at the evening service in the Pioneer Chapel for Ash Wednesday. Taize music was offered again on Maundy Thursday evening service by Cindy, Frank and their musician friends, with Nicolai Vetrovec on drums. Roanoke Revival Jessie Acker-Johnson Chancel Choir

Annual Report EDUCATION, SPIRITUAL LIFE, AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE REPORT Suzie Hasselkuss & Jennifer Vetrovec, Co-Chairs The Education, Spiritual Life & Outreach Committee coordinates the many programs and activities that involve one or more of our program areas. This year, ESLO was Suzie Hasselkuss instrumental in coordinating Welcome Back/ESLO Recruitment Fair, the Advent Decorating Day/Luncheon, Tres Reyes Celebration, our Lenten Mix-It-Up! Potlucks, and our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Page 6 Jennifer Vetrovec Diaconate Carol Roach & Linda Joost, Deacons for Worship Sally Kusalo, Deacon for Caring Circle Purchased and prepared the elements and communion table for all Sunday and special communion services. Fellowship Pat Payne, Lauren Smith-Bove, and TJ Wilkinson, Co-Chairs Fellowship serves food and drinks to welcome members and visitors and to offer hospitality to our Church community. It takes many helping hands to provide hospitality. Thanks to our Fellowship Captains for their generous support: Jan Bass, Julie Booher, TJ Wilkinson, Linda Joost, Amy and Rachel Rios-Richardson, and Pat Payne. Our Fellowship Host provided healthy snacks during Coffee Hour: Keith Smith, Jan Bass, Linda Joost, Susie Newman, Suzie Hasselkuss, Michael Stuber, Peggy Apperson, Pat Payne, Julie Booher, TJ Wilkinson, Dianne Dorn, Jessie Shimmin, Bernie Concepcion, Jana Aloo, and Marv Beck. 7 Annual Report Page 7 Education & Spiritual Life Team Dianne Dorn & Theressa Collier, CO-Chairs This year, we have had an active and successful Church School program. Most Sundays we offered one class for children in grades K-5 while middle school and high school youth were given the option of remaining in worship or assisting in the classroom. Teams of two teachers taught each class using the video-based curriculum Whirl Lectionary from Sparkhouse, the Christian Education arm of Augsburg Fortress. In addition to Church School, children also benefited from special educational activities during All Saints, Advent, Tres Reyes, Candidating Weekend, Easter, and the Festival of the Christian Home. During Advent, a cardboard nativity play area was constructed in Oliver Hall. The area included animal masks, Christmas books, and a book box in which to sit and read Christmas stories. A new donkey and lamb joined the 7- foot tall Mary, Joseph, and Jesus figure made last year. Every Sunday in Advent, a large format coloring poster illustrating key Isaiah passages were colored by both children and adults after worship. Dianne Dorn Our bright and clean nursery for infants to pre-k children was staffed each Sunday by Kemy Gekara and Yoselin Penado with occasional assistance from Eden youth Narayah Aloo and Isabel Walth. Youth were exceptionally busy in In the Fall, we partnered with Starr King Unitarian-Universalist Church to offer youth three different activities: a game night (Card-a- Palooza), a roller skating party, and a service trip to the Alameda County Theressa Collier Food Bank. In the Spring, Eden youth had a Mix-It-Up potluck like their adult counterparts, attended a service project at the Oakland Zoo, received an Asian cooking lesson, had a Bake-Off to raise funds for a future Blue Theology trip, and represented the Church at the NCNC UCC Annual Gathering at Sonoma State. In addition to our activities for children and youth, three adult education groups met regularly. Our Daytime & Evening Bible Study met biweekly on Mondays in the Fireside Room for fellowship, prayer, and study. In the Fall, Bible Study used Animate, a video-based curriculum from Sparkhouse for adults exploring how to use the Bible in contemporary society. In the Spring, the focus was on the Parables of Jesus. The Seekers met weekly on Wednesday mornings for fellowship and to discuss books on religion and spirituality. This year, the Seekers discussed Aging as a Spiritual Practice by Lewis Richmond, Two Dogs and a Parrot by Joan Chittister, The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear by William Barber, Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, and God, A Human History by Reza Aslan. Seekers hosted a spiritual retreat in early January to practice some of the techniques they learned about in Richmond's book. In addition to these activities, co-chair Theressa Collier provided arts and craft enrichment to children attending the Comida para Cherryland, during our Advent Decorating day, and for our DTAM Candidating Weekend, the last of which produced a lovely mural that was featured in the Narthex during Easter and currently graces the West Wing bulletin board. FESCO Pat Payne, Representative The Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) supports homeless families with stable emergency and transitional housing. Eden Church hosted the Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon as a fundraiser for FESCO on Nov 17 in Oliver Hall. The event sold 141 tickets and several community groups sponsored tables including Cherryland Association, Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, La Familia and local churches. Volunteers made beautiful pumpkin centerpieces. Several raffle prizes were given away and everyone had a wonderful time. With combined contributions, the luncheon raised $6,066 to benefit FESCO. Eden Church members also joined FESCO s 21 st Annual Shelter Shuffle on Apr 28. The event was held at the San Leandro Marina. Approximately 20 volunteers joined the walkathon and our team raised $3,200 for FESCO. I represented Eden Church on the FESCO Board. As noted in the Senior Minister s Report, FESCO voted to merge with La Familia Counseling Services on Jul 1. FESCO will become a department of La Familia, while continuing to do business as FESCO. They will retain an administrative presence on the Eden campus. Eden Church and other FESCO sponsors will appoint a representative to serve on an advisory group for the FESCO department of La Familia.

Annual Report Page 8 E-vangelism Team Athena Guy Malloy & Keith Smith, Co-Chairs The E-Team had several new committee members join us this past year, a year of continuing to re-evaluate the venues and events where we make our welcoming presence known to our community. We had a booth at Castro Valley Pride in Jul, which is always a well-attended event and includes one of the populations we appeal to, the LGBTQ community. We also had a presence at the Cherryland Eggstravaganza before Easter, an event that was popular with young families, another one of our populations of interest. For the first time in many years, we made the conscious decision not to march in the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Parade in May. That Athena Malloy decision was made because we are most effective when we re able to spend time chatting with individuals about our church, and what generally happens during the parade is that a lot of giveaways are provided without any impact on the number of individuals actually visiting the Church due to that outreach. One thing that has also increased in the past year, thanks to the efforts of Pastor Pepper, is our Youth group s visibility in the community. Our youth have been representing us with service projects at the Alameda County Food Bank in December and the Earth Day service project at the Oakland Zoo in April. With every youth group outing, some of the youth and chaperones wear their Eden Church shirts, and our identity as a church group provides opportunity for conversation and engagement. Any appearance in the community by Eden Church, such as our participation during the yearly FESCO Shelter Shuffle, is always a natural extension of the E-Team and an opportunity to engage anyone who s willing to chat with us for a few minutes. The E-Team is just one part of the village that it takes to publicize our open and affirming, "God is still speaking" perspective. Our plan for the next year will be to update our online and social media presence, such as creating updated Yelp reviews. We need to maximize the tools we re all naturally using every day to ensure that we re easy to find for those who are looking for a welcoming church home. We must be doing something right, as we ve had several new young families join us for regular church services in the past year. Athena also shared something her brother told her: he was on BART one day in May and happened to overhear a conversation by someone looking for a gay- friendly church. The speaker mentioned Eden! Stewardship Team Dianne Dorn, Chair The Stewardship Team was again blessed with committed and imaginative members to help with the mission of outreach in the last fiscal year. Our members included TJ Wilkinson, Pat Payne, Julie Booher, Jan Bass, Marylin Wheatley-Powers and myself with Pastor Pepper as our staff liaison. This year, Pastor Pepper wrote a beautiful Christmas offering invitation letter with all of the holiday activities listed. I wrote the Easter offering invitation letter with additions from Pastors Pepper and Arlene. We also supported the Neighbors in Need offering in the Fall and the One Great Hour of Sharing offering during Lent. The Stewardship campaign for 2018 was Ready for the Future, which encompassed the outcome of the Strategic Plan and the welcome of Rev. Marvin Lance Wiser in June as the pastor to youth, young adults, and families. We had a pivotal dinner meeting in March to focus our attention on the Red of Ready. We decided to have red-themed snacks on the three Stewardship Sundays in May: On May 6, our snacks were Red Velvet cupcakes in addition to the leftover baked goods from the NCNC UCC Spring meeting on May 5. Our first witnessing steward was Jessica Shimmin with a special guest appearance from her daughter Olive. On May 13, the Stewardship Committee hosted a Strawberry Shortcake coffee hour. Our witnessing stewards were Amy and Rachel Rios-Richardson. On May 20, Stewardship Sunday, TJ Wilkinson was our witnessing steward and we enjoyed all forms of cherry pie at coffee hour. I m very grateful to our witnessing stewards for speaking honestly about their backgrounds, families, and the home they ve found at Eden. It s a very challenging task to speak in front of the whole Church. We are so appreciative of any and all gifts given to Eden to continue the day-to-day operation of our many ministries. May you all be infinitely blessed.

Annual Report Page 9 PLANNED GIVING COMMITTEE REPORT The Rev. Rob Parrish, Chair The Planned Giving Committee was chartered by Eden Church and the Eden Area Foundation in 2011 for the purpose of developing and maintaining a program of stewardship that invites and coordinates financial contributions from members and friends for the long-term financial health and future ministry of the Church and the Foundation. During the past fiscal year, the Planned Giving Committee held two seminars for the benefit of the congregation and community. The first was led by Attorney Alma Soongi Beck and addressed the topic of estate planning, including issues that particularly affect LGBT families. The second was led by the Rev. Rob Parrish, CPA, and provided an overview of changes in the federal tax code and how these changes will affect charitable tax deductions in 2018 and following years. Eden's Planned Giving seminars are offered free of charge to members and friends for educational and theological reasons, not for sales purposes. The Oliver bequest, an example of planned giving through estate planning, continues to provide significant financial support to Eden Church and other Eden Area non-profit organizations. In the fall of 2017, the Oliver Salt Plant and Salt Ponds, located at Point Eden Landing in Hayward, were sold at auction. Proceeds were distributed by the Trustee, and invested by the Church Council in a portfolio managed by Graystone Consulting, a Morgan Stanley business. The Oliver Trust and the LLC were both closed by the Trustee which brought to a close the 25-year disposition of the estates of Alden & Gordon Oliver. Recently, Eden received scholarship bequests from the Estates of Richard C. Norberg and Eleanor M. Norberg. These bequests are further examples of planned giving through estate planning. For more information about Eden s planned giving policy and program, or how to make a planned gift to the Church, the Foundation, or both, please speak with any member of the committee or our Senior Minister. Planned Giving Committee members include: Jan Bass, Stephanie Cartwright, Herb Graw, the Rev. Rob Parrish (chair), Bob Turner, and the Rev. Dr. Arlene K. Nehring. MEMORIAL COMMITTEE REPORT Jan Bass, Associate Treasurer The Memorial Funds are managed by the Church Council, recorded by the Church bookkeeper, and acknowledged by the Associate Treasurer. During the past year, financial contributions were received in memory of the following members and friends: Mary Burroughs, George Cumming, Fred Dorn, Janis Richards, Don Sheppard, and Rebecca Wiebe. A total of $1,655, which was received in previous years, was expended in the summer of 2017 to provide scholarships from the Todd Bove Campership Fund for Eden youth to attend Camps and Conferences sponsored by the NCNC UCC. A gift of $12,000 was received and distributed for the Fred Dorn Memorial Scholarships. Eight graduating high school students received $1,500 each. The recipients were: Alma de la Cruz Perez Jared Smith-Bove Aubury Freed Litzy Venegas Rodriguez Dievy Jan Carlos Flores Guardado Nicolai Michael Vetrovec Estefani Villagomez Rosas Sandy Yerennyse Pedraza Arcega Persons wishing to make a gift to the Church in memory of a loved one are invited to write Memorial Fund in the memo section of the check or in a note enclosed with the gift. Donors are welcome to contact the Associate Treasurer or Senior Minister to discuss giving opportunities. Jan Bass
