1 Volume 21 No. 6 The Chimes Tel: Sunday Worship: 10:00 a.m. June 2017 Eden UCC has been an Open and Affirming Church since We believe that all people are children of God, that persons of all ages, races, and sexual orientations are part of our increasingly diverse culture, and we welcome all persons into the full life and ministry of this church. Church Office Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday: Closed Visit our church website: Like us on Facebook: Eden United Church of Christ Follow us on GREENING UP THE CHURCH The Day of Pentecost commemorates the birth of the Church. It starts off with a bang: first wind, then fire and confusion. Ultimately clarity emerges as representatives of the global village gather in Jerusalem to discern what new thing God is doing in this post-easter world. Through the Spirit s guidance, the apostles learn that Christ is alive and living among them as they go and tell others what they have seen and heard. If the Church is to survive and thrive in the future, we must follow the first apostles example by reinventing ourselves and re-presenting the good news for each generation and nation. Pentecost 2017 is no different, and thankfully our confirmation class is open to the challenge. During a recent class meeting, I asked our fledgling apostles to describe their vision for the Church. Without hesitation they chimed in with these ideas: we need to go green, sing more up-tempo songs, develop a youth group, show up for social justice, and become more racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse faith community. The confirmands were surprised when I told them that their ideas were right in step with Eden s strategic plan including plans to go paperless with Chimes, step up our recycling program, perform more varied worship music, lean into our sanctuary identity, and hire a bi-lingual associate minister for youth, young adults, and young families. The alignment between the generations at Eden is a sure sign that the Day of Pentecost is upon us a day that the prophet Joel anticipated centuries earlier and the evangelist Luke affirmed in Acts 2:17 when they said, [Y]our sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men and women shall see visions, and your elders shall dream dreams. Indeed, Pentecost is upon us. Come Holy Spirit, come. ~ Pastor Arlene Welcome to Eden! Eden is a diverse and growing church. At Eden, people of all ages and backgrounds join together to grow spiritually, do good in the world, and develop healing and nurturing relationships. At our church, you will not be told what to believe. We feel that the way we treat one another is more important than holding uniform beliefs. And, while the Bible is important to our faith, it is not the last word. We believe God is Still Speaking through science, nature, personal experience, other faith traditions and more. On Sunday mornings, our church services and kids programs are open, friendly and innovative. Every week at Eden, you ll find all kinds of activities retreats, yoga classes, service projects, music programs, labyrinth walks, study groups to nurture mind, body, and spirit. At Eden, we are on a journey together to understand and live God s truth for our lives. Come and join us on the journey. Check out our website. Give us a call. Come by and see us. We look forward to welcoming you!
