1 Volume 20 No. 12 The Chimes December 2016 Eden UCC has been an Open and Affirming Church since We believe that all people are children of God, that persons of all ages, races, and sexual orientations are part of our increasingly diverse culture, and we welcome all persons into the full life and ministry of this church. Tel: Sunday Worship: 10:00 a.m. Church Office Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday: Closed Visit our church website: Like us on Facebook: Eden United Church of Christ Follow us on NO CHRISTMAS WITHOUT ADVENT November 27, 2016 marks the start of a new year (2017) and a new season (Advent) on the Christian calendar. If Advent were a person, it would likely have self-esteem problems. Here s why. Most people don t know anything about Advent, and they are not particularly interested in learning. This is because the general public has been sucked into secular marketing campaigns that encourage everyone to skip Thanksgiving and Advent and dive headlong into Christmas particularly the commercial aspects of the holiday. A case in point: shopping malls set up Christmas trees and start playing carols the day after Halloween. The invitations to mark the start of the new Christian year and participate in Christian Advent observances are profoundly counterculture acts. The decision to accept these invitations is even more radical. Nevertheless, I dare you to be different this year. If you are up to the challenge, join us at Eden as we delve into the deeper spiritual work of Advent work that is profoundly different from the secular frenzy. The work of Advent is (and always has been) about listening to prophets, naming the need for change in our lives and world, praying and watching for God to do a new thing, and laboring with our Creator to birth a new world in which love and justice prevail and peace is possible. I invite indeed I dare all of us to be part of this grand group project called Advent, and I extend this invitation not simply because it is my duty to do so as a pastor, but because I know from reading the scriptures that there was no vision without prophets, no baby without gestation, and no delivery without labor. Hence, there never was and there never will be Christmas without Advent. ~ Pastor Arlene Welcome to Eden! Eden is a diverse and growing church. At Eden, people of all ages and backgrounds join together to grow spiritually, do good in the world, and develop healing and nurturing relationships. At our church, you will not be told what to believe. We feel that the way we treat one another is more important than holding uniform beliefs. And, while the Bible is important to our faith, it is not the last word. We believe God is Still Speaking through science, nature, personal experience, other faith traditions and more. On Sunday mornings, our church services and kids programs are open, friendly and innovative. Every week at Eden, you ll find all kinds of activities retreats, yoga classes, service projects, music programs, labyrinth walks, study groups to nurture mind, body, and spirit. At Eden, we are on a journey together to understand and live God s truth for our lives. Come and join us on the journey. Check out our website. Give us a call. Come by and see us. We look forward to welcoming you!

6 The Chimes Volume 20 No. 12 Page 6 Christmas Greetings to Japan For the second year, Eden Church is exchanging Christmas greetings with the Natori Church of Natori, Japan and the Aizu Radiation Information Center. Natori is a suburb south of Sendai, Japan, located quite close to the Sendai Airport, which was devastated by the tsunami. Although the church was not hit, church members lost their lives, as well as homes in the great disaster. Many people have come to live in temporary shelters in the city of Natori, and the Natori Church tries to minister to those in need. Natori is a very conservative area, and many people have a closed mind toward Christianity. Despite this, church members have been able to reach out to people in the area and create many children s programs. The Aizu Radiation Information Center is housed at a local Kyodan church in the town of Aizu-Wakamatsu (Fukushima Prefecture). The Center is a citizen s network fully supported by volunteers which aims to 1) gather and share information; 2) support local residents by networking; and 3) join in actions of solidarity with victims in the Fukushima Nuclear Plant disaster area. Last year, Christmas cards and two special ink drawing banners were sent to Japan by Eden Church and children in the Comida program. In return, the Natori Church and Aizu Radiation Information Center sent greetings, thank you notes, and photos of their children. This year, Eden s care package will include Christmas cards as well as Eden caps and flashlights. For further information about the Christmas Card project, contact Dianne Dorn. Important Comida Budget Update Thank you to all who have responded with contributions in support of Comida para Cherryland. Based on current needs and a generous FEMA grant received by the ACCFB we anticipate having enough money to fund the food pantry through Jan Every dollar contributed goes directly to the purchase of food. The direct costs of the Comida are solely supported by donations from members and friends (not the church s annual budget). A contribution of $4.50 buys one bag for a family of 4-7 and includes one bag of rice and one bag of beans, a can of peanut butter, a can of tuna, a can of tomato product, oatmeal, fresh fruit and vegetables, and a bag of chicken legs. Contributions may be made using pew envelopes or by mailing contributions to the church. Please make checks payable to Eden United Church of Christ and note Comida on the envelope or check. For information about the budget, see the Rev. Rob Parrish. To discuss a financial contribution to the Comida, see Michael Stuber. Seekers Book Discussion The Seekers read and discuss books on religion and other topics. The Seekers began reading The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander on Nov 9. The New Jim Crow explores how the US criminal justice system functions as a racial caste system as pernicious as apartheid. Please join us for our weekly discussions on Wednesdays at 10 am in the Community Room. Contact Pastor Pepper for info. The project was finished on Nov 16. Retirement Living Conversation On Nov 7, Eden Church members and friends conducted a smart shopper s guide to retirement communities in the East Bay.
