CALVARY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH RWANDA PARTNERSHIP SUNDAY

WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT CALVARY! We are glad to have you with us today for worship. Please stop by our Welcome Table in the Chalice Room for more information about our church family and involvement opportunities in our ministry. The restrooms and nursery are located in the Christian Education wing through the sanctuary doors to your right. Just follow the signage. DURING TODAY S WORSHIP Large-print bulletins are available at the entrances. Individual listening devices for improved sound are also available from ushers. If your infant or child needs care or extra attention during the worship service you may leave the Sanctuary and return as you wish. Rocking chairs are available at the back of the Sanctuary. Our Church Nursery is staffed during worship and fellowship time. Children s packets containing quiet activities are available in baskets located at the back of the Sanctuary. Burgundy fellowship registers are passed for you to sign, so that we might know you are here; all worshipers have an opportunity to provide updated information and to greet one another by name following the service. Please silence all electronic devices when in the Sanctuary. IF YOU ARE NEW TO CALVARY We invite you to stop by fellowship hour after worship for refreshments, conversation, and information about church programs and volunteer opportunities. 3 The Order of Service for the Worship of God September 17, :00 A.M. We ask that you take this time to prepare your hearts and minds for worship. THE ORGAN PRELUDES Three Global Songs Siyahamba (We Are Marching in the Light of God linstead (Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ Halle, Halle, Hallelujah Arr. John Behnke South African Freedom Song Jamaican Folk Song Caribbean Traditional THE STRIKING OF THE BELL THE WELCOME (Please sign and pass the burgundy fellowship register at this time.) THE INTROIT -Sanna, Sannanina South Africa (The congregation stands at the beginning of My Lord! What a Morning.) * THE HYMN 449 My Lord! What a Morning Irregular * THE PRAYER OF ADORATION THE CALL TO CONFESSION (All be seated.) Mrs. Susan Nutter THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION, responsively People: God, our fears run deep. Sometimes we can only see our own point of view. We stick with those who are like us, rarely venturing outside our comfort zones. We do not hear those crying for justice and true peace. We blame those who are suffering and in need, instead of standing by them. We deny the power of your gospel to unite us with those who are different from us. Lord, give us eyes to see and ears to hear. Open us to new possibilities of life for all of your people, and use us to enact the new life given in Christ. (A time of silence for personal confession.) Open us to new possibilities of life for all of your people, and use us to enact the new life given in Christ. Amen. THE KYRIE ELEISON Ewuradze Ghana * Congregation standing, as able. 3

THE ASSURANCE OF GOD S FORGIVENESS (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Gloria Patri followed by The Passing of The Peace.) * THE GLORIA PATRI, sung in unison Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. * THE PASSING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST, responsively May the Peace of Christ be with you all. People: And also with you. (Let us share the peace of Christ.) THE TIME WITH YOUNG DISCIPLES (All be seated.) Dr. Tim Runge (Following this time together, young children through kindergarten age may leave for the nursery.) THE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION THE FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON (Pew Bible OT, page 887) Jeremiah 23:1-8 This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. THE ANTHEM Nanti Ithemba THE SERMON Consciousness of Nations Zimbabwe Seminarian Ben Fitgerald-Fye (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Hymn and The Affirmation of Faith.) * THE HYMN 369 I m Gonna Live So God Can Use Me I m Gonna Live * THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH, responsively We believe in the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who gathers, protects and cares for the church through Word and Spirit. People: This God has done since the beginning of the world and will do to the end. We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the communion of saints called from the entire human family. People: We believe that Christ s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another. 4

People: People: People: People: People: People: We believe that unity is, therefore, both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus Christ. We believe that through the working of God s Spirit it is a binding force, yet simultaneously a reality which must be earnestly pursued and sought. We believe that this unity must become visible so that the world may believe that separation, enmity, and hatred between people and groups is sin. We believe that anything which threatens this unity may have no place in the church and must be resisted. We believe that true faith in Jesus Christ is the only condition for membership of this church. Therefore we reject any doctrine that absolutizes natural diversity in such a way that this hinders or breaks the visible and active unity of the church. We reject any doctrine that professes that this spiritual unity is truly being maintained in the bond of peace while believers are alienated from one another and in despair of reconciliation. We reject any doctrine that denies that a refusal earnestly to pursue this visible unity as a priceless gift is sin. We reject any doctrine that maintains that descent or any other human or social factor should be a consideration in determining membership of the church. We believe that, in obedience to Jesus Christ, its only head, the church is called to confess and to do all these things, even though the authorities and human laws might forbid them and punishment and suffering be the consequence. We believe that Jesus is Lord. To the one and only God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be the honor and the glory for ever and ever Reformed Church Press. Originally published in Unity, Reconciliation, and Justice: A Study Guide for the Belhar Confession. David Alexander (All be seated.) THE CALL TO OFFERING (Our giving is an offering to God. All offerings, whether made in the worship service or outside of it, are part of our worship of God and are used to support Calvary s ministry.) THE OFFERTORY ANTHEM Amen, Siakudmisa South Africa (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Doxology and The Prayer of Dedication.) * THE PRESENTATION OF THE OFFERING AND DOXOLOGY, sung in unison Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him, above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. 5

* THE PRAYER OF DEDICATION Rev. David J. Hanna (All be seated.) THE PRAYERS OF PEOPLE THE LORD PRAYER, in unison Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Hymn followed by The Benediction.) * THE HYMN 536 Lord, Make Us More Holy * THE BENEDICTION * THE CHORAL RESPONSE Siyahamba South Africa * THE POSTLUDE RWANDA PARTNERSHIP SUNDAY Today is our annual Rwanda Partnership service. 8 ANNOUNCEMENTS HURRICANE DISASTERS Calvary is responding to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) request for congregations to donate toward areas of Texas, Louisiana and Florida affected by Hurricane Harvey and IRMA and flooding, If you place a check in the offering plate, please note Hurricane Disaster on the memo line. Please join us in praying for courage for those who are suffering; wisdom and diligence among agencies and individuals assessing damage and directing relief efforts; and for generosity to flow as powerfully as rivers and streams, as we respond to the deep human needs left in the wake of the storm. ICCAP PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Here are the September items being collected: cake, cookie and bread mixes, canned frostings, pie fillings, pie crust mixes, gelatin, pudding and its okay to get creative. Be creative, as long as you stick loosely to this category. CROP HUNGER WALK SNIPPETS One in six Americans struggle with the reality of hunger and food insecurity. Many believe that hunger only affects certain areas of the country. That s not true. It is everywhere, affecting hard-working adults, children and seniors who cannot make ends meet. Here are two current facts: first, 49 million Americans are affected by hunger and second, 17 million American children suffer from hunger. Think about these statistics as you are asked to participate in the CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 15 at 12:30 p.m. CROP Hunger Walk materials are located on the Mission Table. Watch for details on our new and improved CROP Hunger Walk! Please take an envelope and start collecting donations from friends, relatives and neighbors. CROP HUNGER WALK MISSION LUNCH Our annual CROP Hunger Walk Mission Lunch will follow the September 24 service. We will follow a CROP theme with a menu of beef vegetable soup or meatless vegetable soup, tasty bread, crackers, fresh local apples and homemade bar cookies. Watch for posters. We are not asking for food donations from the congregation, but we do need some help at 8:30 a.m. that Sunday and clean-up after the event. Please see Becky Becker if you can give us an hour or two of your time. You do not have to sign up to attend. All freewill monetary donations will go toward Calvary s CROP Hunger Walk collection. SUPPORT BEN To support Ben's call to ministry, the Session has set up a fund to help with his education expenses. To contribute to this fund, please make your check payable to Calvary and print "Education Fund" on the memo line. Please consider helping Ben by making a contribution. RUMP REVIEW Kelly Drummond has agreed to come for an informal mission event on October 3 at 7:00 p.m. to report on her time in Uganda with the Peace Corps. In particular, she will tell us about her Reusable Menstrual Pad (RUMP) project which we contributed to last summer. Please bring your favorite easy evening snack to share and the Mission and Outreach Committee will provide the beverage. 8

A FEAST OF FELLOWSHIP (NOT Food) The Hospitality Committee needs YOUR help! Volunteers are needed to host and serve Fellowship Hour! We need to keep the focus on gracious FELLOWSHIP, not on food! It is your smile and hello to a visitor that makes all the difference! There are to be changes this year! We very strongly urge hosts to serve simple food offerings. Please select ONLY 1-3 items from the following list: pretzels, popcorn, fruit, vegetables, cheese, crackers, donut holes, or type of cookie. Please sign up to host and serve. Fellowship Hour depends on widespread volunteering. If there is no host, we will have only beverages. We recommend teams of two or more to host each Sunday. The sign-up sheet may be found on the Welcome Table in the Chalice Room. Thank you in advance for your participation! In Christ's service, Your Hospitality Committee, Heidi Earhart, Claudia Brown, Stacy Bussell, Helen Edwards, Marge Henry, Edna Lehman, Linda Lloyd, Jo-Anne McQuilkin, Thelma Smith, Nancy Westburg 9
