2 WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT CALVARY! Wherever you may be on your journey of faith, Calvary Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), welcomes you. We are a community where questions are valued and where faith is experienced as a loving relationship with God and with all people. If your infant or child needs care or extra attention during the worship service you may leave the Sanctuary and return as you wish. Rocking chairs are available at the back of the Sanctuary. Our Church Nursery is staffed during worship and fellowship time. Children s packets containing quiet activities are available in baskets located at the back of the Sanctuary. Burgundy fellowship registers are passed for you to sign, so that we might know you are here; all worshipers have an opportunity to provide updated information and to greet one another by name following the service. Please silence all electronic devices when in the Sanctuary. IF YOU ARE NEW TO CALVARY Parking, several professional offices make their parking lots available to church members on Sunday mornings. Feel free to take an available space at the following locations, and thank these neighbors when you have the chance: Rose Medical Associates the lot runs between Klondyke Avenue and School Street, parallel to South Seventh; Berkshire Hathaway Realty near the corner of South Seventh and School (please do not park in their reserved spaces); Bonya, Gazza & DeGory lot on the left on School, near the light at South Sixth. (That office was once Calvary s manse.) The Indiana Borough Parking Garage is located at 650 Water Street. 2

About today s service: It is fitting on Reformation Sunday that we celebrate our church s anniversary. Today marks two hundred and eleven years of devout worship and faithful service. Founded in 1807 as the First Presbyterian Church, the congregation now worships in its third building on this site. Its name was changed to Calvary in Many of this morning s prayers come from worship services from past years. About today s hymns: 625 How Great Thou Art "How Great Thou Art" is a Christian hymn based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg ( ) in Mönsterås, Sweden in It was translated into German and then into Russian. It was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own. The composition was set to a Russian melody. It was popularized by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades. "How Great Thou Art" was ranked second (after "Amazing Grace") on a list of the favorite hymns of all time in a survey by Christianity Today magazine in Let Us Build a House-All are Welcome The text and music for this hymn were written by Marty Haugen, an American composer of liturgical music, in Originally, this hymn was written for a church dedication; however, the notes in the Glory to God hymnal remind us that, The building is at best a vessel for the essential love and hope, life and faith, peace and justice, hospitality and nurture that form the worshipping community. 543-God, Be the Love to Search and Keep Me This is a current hymn, written in 2004; but, it is a hymn deeply anchored in the history and tradition of the church. The words of this hymn, attributed in part to St. Patrick, reflect a particular prayer style in the Celtic tradition known as lorica a Latin word for armor or breastplate. There are many prayers that arise from a word of mouth tradition of praying these kinds of breastplate prayers to petition God for both presence and protection. These prayers can often be found in traditions that pray to particular saints. About today s liturgical color: Red is the color of fire, which symbolizes the presence of God. From God s presence at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-31) to the establishment of this church, we celebrate the work of the Holy Spirit. 3

9 2019 CHURCH NOMINATING FORM The Church Nominating Committee encourages each member of the congregation to have a voice in suggesting church members to serve in a leadership role in the church. 11 ANNOUNCEMENTS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME Next weekend, Sunday, November 4, do not forget to turn your clocks back one hour. STAFF NOTE Rev. David Hanna will return Monday after attending a family wedding in Baltimore, Maryland. ST. ANDREW S SUNDAY Calvary will celebrate St. Andrew s Sunday on November 4, As has been our tradition there will be a high tea following worship. Donations of cookies and tea sandwiches are needed. Sign-up sheets are in the Chalice Room. YOU ARE INVITED TO A HAYRIDE AND HOTDOG ROAST today, 4:30 6:30 p.m. at the farm of Bobby Jones. Hotdogs, drinks and s'mores are provided. LITTLE DRESSES You are invited to take a few minutes during the Fellowship Hour to look over the Little Dresses for Africa displayed on a rack in the Chalice Room. If you remove one from the rack please return it to it s original place after look at it, since they have been sorted by size. The dresses will be shipped to Rwanda the first of November. Many thanks to the Deacons for agreeing to finance the shipping fees for sending the little dresses to Rwanda. Our appreciation also goes to the volunteer seamstresses, to the volunteers who assembled kits, and those who donated fabric, pillowslips, sewing trims and supplies. Special thanks to Sara Crumm who made over 50 dresses. CROP HUNGER WALK it was a cold, windy and wet day in Indiana CROP Hunger Walk last Sunday. We seemed doomed, but sure enough, people bundled up and walked and as of Sunday, we had collected close to $7,000. The collection will remain open until November 4, when we will send the last donations to Church World Service. It is too early to determine who will keep the golden shoe for the next year. That will be determined after all donations are submitted. PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE (PDA) PDA is seeking support for those affected by Hurricane Florence. Initial assessment suggests catastrophic destruction. If you would like to donate, please write checks to Calvary Presbyterian Church with DROOO169 or Hurricane Florence on the remittance line and place in the offering; or on your own, write checks to PDA DROOO169 and send to Presbyterian Church (USA) PO Box , Pittsburgh, PA Today is the last day to donate to PDA through the offering.
