WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT CALVARY! Wherever you may be on your journey of faith, Calvary Presbyterian Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), welcomes you. We are a community where questions are valued and where faith is experienced as a loving relationship with God and with all people. Affirming that every person is a unique creation and a child of God, we believe discrimination is incompatible with the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. We believe there is room at the table for people of different views and understandings. We are enriched by many voices and united in one Spirit, the spirit of a God who loves each one of us abundantly and unconditionally. If you are passing through: we extend God s blessings to you as you continue on your way. If you are seeking a home: we invite you to join with us as we grow in faith and serve Jesus Christ. DURING TODAY S WORSHIP Large-print bulletins are available at the entrances. Individual listening devices for improved sound are also available from ushers. If your infant or child needs care or extra attention during the worship service you may leave the Sanctuary and return as you wish. Rocking chairs are available at the back of the Sanctuary. Our Church Nursery is staffed during worship and fellowship time. Children s packets containing quiet activities are available in baskets located at the back of the Sanctuary. Burgundy fellowship registers are passed for you to sign, so that we might know you are here; all worshipers have an opportunity to provide updated information and to greet one another by name following the service. Please silence all electronic devices when in the Sanctuary. IF YOU ARE NEW TO CALVARY Parking, several professional offices make their parking lots available to church members on Sunday mornings. Feel free to take an available space at the following locations, and thank these neighbors when you have the chance: Rose Medical Associates the lot runs between Klondyke Avenue and School Street, parallel to South Seventh; Berkshire Hathaway Realty near the corner of South Seventh and School (please do not park in their reserved spaces); Bonya, Gazza & DeGory lot on the left on School, near the light at South Sixth. (That office was once Calvary s manse.) The Indiana Borough Parking Garage is located at 650 Water Street. 3

ORDER OF SERVICE FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD November 4, :00 A.M. We ask that you take this time to prepare your hearts and minds for worship. The Prelude Hymn Medley Finlandia (Be Still, My Soul) Precious Lord How Can I Keep from Singing Dix (For the Beauty of the Earth) George Balderose, Piper THE STRIKING OF THE BELL arr. George Balderose THE WELCOME (Please sign and pass the blue fellowship register at this time.) THE CHORAL INTROIT Brother James Air Gordon Jacob (The congregation stands at the beginning of Hymn.) * THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN 307 God of Grace and God of Glory CWM Rhondda * THE GATHERING PRAYER, responsively Student Pastor Ben Fitzgerald-Fye Leader: Andrew the Apostle was the means of bringing Simon Peter to a knowledge of the living Christ. People: Grant that we too may use every opportunity to share our faith with others. Leader: Andrew gave up his career and home to serve his Lord. People: Grant that we too may be willing to sacrifice, and renounce those things that keep us from true commitment. Leader: Let us pray together. Unison: Almighty God, you have blessed us with a rich inheritance: and we look with gratitude to all who have built up the Church of Jesus Christ in our own land: the saints and martyrs and reformers, the great host of women and men who have witnessed faithfully and worked loyally in every generation. Help us to live within the light that was carried to our shores so long ago, and to continue the work of our forbearers that our children may enjoy the heritage, and grow up in the knowledge and love of Christ. Amen. -adapted from November 11, 1990 bulletin. (All be seated.) * Congregation standing, as able 4

Dr. Tom Crumm, Clerk of Session Leader: To look upon our past is to acknowledge before the throne of grace that we have often forgotten God s goodness, failed to keep God s commandments, and not trusted God s promises. People: The Lord is near to the broken-hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Leader: Let us confess our sins. Unison: Almighty and most merciful God, we humbly confess our many sins and shortcomings. We acknowledge our transgressions as a nation and as a people: our pride and vain glory, our self-sufficiency and forgetfulness of you. We have been ungrateful for your great goodness to us. We have been slow to obey your call and to spread the good news of great joy. We have broken the unity of your Church, and by our divisions have weakened your cause and hindered the Gospel of Christ. Pardon us, we pray. THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION, responsively (A time of silence for personal confession.) Leader: Blot our transgressions, O Lord. Revive your work in our midst. Cause your power and glory to be seen as in the days of old. Amen. THE KYRIE ELEISON Burns Kyrie -from November 11, 1990 bulletin arr. Dr. Joseph Baunoch THE ASSURANCE OF GOD S FORGIVENESS Leader: Hearken now unto the comforting assurance of the grace of God, promised in the gospel to all. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. All praise be to God. Amen. -based on 1 John 1:9 (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Gloria Patri and The Passing of The Peace.) * THE GLORIA PATRI (English) (Old Scots) Glory be to the Father, Gloir to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Sone, and to the Holy Ghost: and to the Hailie Gaist: As it was in the beginning As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, is now, and ay shall last. world without end. Amen. Amen. - Scottish Psalter,

* THE PASSING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST, responsively Leader: May the Peace of Christ be with you all, People: And also with you. THE TIME WITH YOUNG DISCIPLES (All be seated.) Dr. Tim Runge (Following this time together, children through kindergarten age may leave for the Nursery.) THE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Leader: Let us pray: O God, who dost instruct us by Thy Holy Scriptures, we beseech Thee, enlighten our minds and purify our hearts, that we may be able to comprehend, and receive as we ought, the things which are therein revealed to us. May we not only hear Thy word but keep it, so living by its divine instructions all the time of our sojourn in this world, that we may come finally to eternal salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. -adapted from A Book of Common Order being Form of Worship, 1877 THE PSALTER (Pew Bible OT, page 674) Psalm 91 Leader: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. THE ANTHEM Celtic Laud (All stand.) Craig Courtney * THE GOSPEL LESSON (Pew Bible NT, page 122) John 8:2-11 Leader: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (All be seated.) THE SERMON Sticks & Stones Rev. David J. Hanna (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Hymn and The Affirmation of Faith.) * THE HYMN 445 God, How Can We Forgive Leoni * THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH, in unison We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom we must cleave, whom alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we put our trust. The same eternal God and Father, who by grace chose us in his Son Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world was laid, appointed him to be our head, our brother, our pastor, and the great bishop of our souls. Amen. -a selection from the Scots Confession, 1560 (All be seated.) 6

THE CALL TO OFFERING (Our giving is an offering to God. All offerings, whether made in the worship service or outside of it, are part of our worship of God and are used to support Calvary s ministry.) Leader: Let us return to God the offerings of our life and the gifts of the earth. Freely you have received, freely may you give. THE OFFERTORY ANTHEM A Gaelic Blessing John Rutter (Stand with the Chancel Choir for the singing of The Doxology and The Prayer of Dedication.) * THE PRESENTATION OF THE OFFERING AND DOXOLOGY, in unison Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him, above ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. -adapted from The Celtic Vision edited by Esther de Waal, p. 30 (All be seated.) THE COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED Leader: Ever-faithful God, you have knit together as one body in Christ those who have been your people in all times and places. In the quietness of the sanctuary, we bring to heart and mind those loved ones departed, those saints of Calvary who gave of their labor and resources, those faithful ones who taught and preached, those devoted people who shared the leadership of Calvary, those visionary people who foresaw the future of Calvary. Gerald Buriok Patricia Coulson Geraldine Lundstrom Keith Colvin Mary Ann Shoff Cora Spielman Donald Allison James Bentley Ralph Waldo (The tolling of the bell followed by silence.) 7

As we pray for the great cloud of witnesses, keep us in communion with your saints, following their example of faith and life, until that day when we shall dwell with them in the joy of your eternal kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who taught us to pray: THE LORD S PRAYER, in unison (English) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. (Old Scots) Uor fader qukilk beest I Hevin, Hallowit weird thyne nam. Cum thyne kinrik. 10 ANNOUNCEMENTS THE GREAT HIGHLAND BAGPIPE is an ancient instrument, believed to have been brought to Scotland by the Romans. It is played by air from an inflated bag. The reeds in the three drones create the steady hum, while the melody is played with a double reed in the chanter. Several forms of bagpipes are found throughout the world, but the most common are associated with Scotland and its music. For centuries, the pipes have been played for dancing, mourning, calling men to battle, and especially for celebrating. LITTLE DRESSES FOR AFRICA A total of 137 dresses in assorted sizes were shipped this past week to Rwanda in care of Kay Day, who will deliver them to the Gitarama Presbytery for distribution to our sister church, Nyarubuye Mpushi Church and other congregations of that region. Many hands personally touched these dresses as the project progressed and we are gratified that so many members and friends joined the effort in a variety of ways. ICCAP PRODUCT OF THE MONTH For November and December we are requesting easy holiday foods such as boxed potato, rice and cornbread mixes, canned sweet or white potatoes, marshmallows, canned pumpkin, stuffing mix, canned cranberries and gravy, bisquick, sauerkraut, canned green beans, carrots and corn, cream of creamed soups, canned onion rings, boxed dessert mixes, pie crust mix, canned milk, crushed pineapple, applesauce and spiced apple rings. The only thing missing is turkey or ham and, hopefully, after receiving all the trimmings free from ICCAP, a small turkey, chicken or half ham will be affordable for most families. ADVENT BY CANDELIGHT All women of Calvary (and their guests) are invited to Advent by Candlelight on Tuesday, December 4, 6:30 8:30 p.m. This is a special evening of seasonal music and inspirational readings in a beautiful setting with those dear to you. If you have not received a registration form in the mail, please see Tracee Denlinger. Registrations for this special evening are due by Sunday, November 11 and can be dropped off in the basket provided in the Chalice Room or to the church office. ADVENT DEVOTIONAL BOOKLETS will be available Sunday, November 18 and 25 in the Narthex and the Vestibule. Please choose one and enjoy it during the advent season. GRATEFUL HEARTS BREAKFAST During what can be a busy holiday season, allow yourself time to spend with your church family at the Grateful Hearts breakfast on Sunday, November 18, 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Dining Room. This special breakfast has become a tradition of good food, craft-making and community with an emphasis on expressing our thanks to God together. Hope to see you there. 10

ANNOUNCEMENTS (continued) RUTH HURLEY, A RETIRED WAC FROM WORLD WAR TWO, will share her experiences at the Annual Fall Meeting of FOV (auxiliary) at St. Andrew s Village on Thursday, November 8. Refreshments will be served at 1:30 p.m. followed by a brief business meeting at 2:00 p.m. A campus update by Brian Parks, CEO, will also be included. The gathering will be held in the Living and Learning Center near the mall entrance of The Village. All are welcomed, and no reservations are required. For more information contact Linda Lloyd. PRESBYTERIAN GIVING CATALOGS If you have individuals on your Christmas list who are difficult when it s time to choose their gift, the Presbyterian Giving Catalog has some solutions, and these gifts have great impact. Generous gifts to the Presbyterian Giving Catalog are signs of our gratitude: feeding the hungry, comforting the brokenhearted and sharing our faith with young and old. For instance, you can give a gift of $25 in honor of a loved one that can help improve the food security and livelihood of farmers and families around the world. Catalogs are in the publication stand in the Narthex. If you are interested, an order form and envelope are attached to the catalog. A gift card can be requested for each item you order. 11
