Romans 10:8 JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today s Gospel reminds us. Try a self-serving miracle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; people are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old soft-soap, the snake-oil solutions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personified, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive presence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soul-healing and world-healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renewing, re-creative work and be made whole again. Copyright J. S. The Mystery Revealed Sunday, February 21st from 6:30 to 8:30pm Lent is a wonderful time to explore the mystery of the Eucharist and to understand that everything during the Mass directs us to a personal encounter with Christ. If you d like more information or have any questions, please contact Brenda Fischer at (530) Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest All boys and girls ages nine to fourteen are invited to participate in the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest. The contest will be held on Sunday, February 21st at St. Teresa of Avila Parish Hall. Registration begins at 11:30am, and the competition starts at 12:00pm. This is a free event. Contestants must be at least age 9 on January 1, Winners will advance to the District contest which will take place in this location immediately following our local contest. District winners will advance to the Chapter, and State competitions. A copy of the contestant s birth certificate to verify age, and a parent s signature of consent for the registration sheet are required. 4 First Sunday of Lent Page 4 LENT AND PATIENCE (Black Book 2012) During the next forty days we will be tempted to give up our Lenten resolutions. Be of stout heart, each day is a new beginning God does not count the days, he counts the desire of the heart to turn toward Him. Sometimes it all seems too much and so the temptation is to give up. Just walk with me today is what Christ asks of us. As one day spent with the Lord is life giving, so is one Lenten season with the Lord a blessing forever. We can look upon Lent as a journey. Think about the journeys we take long journeys that can take days, even weeks to complete. Journeys have their ups and downs. We don t really expect them to go smoothly. If we are going to drive across the country, we expect a few car problems, some bad weather, some detours, some missed connections and so forth. We prepare for those things and we deal with them as they come up. I don t expect Lent to be a perfect journey. It will have its ups and downs. But I can make it a good journey. I can make a good start and deal with the breakdowns and disappointments along the way. My goal is Easter, and right now it s a long way off. I m ready for a long journey and I ll deal with whatever comes my way. I encourage you to step back on the road to Easter even if you have been side tracked down other roads. Be kind, be patient with yourself, yet set your face towards Jerusalem and the Resurrection. God Bless, Fr. Mike ~ Giggles: Nowadays, there are three basic food groups: Canned, frozen and takeout. A college coach is berating his team at halftime: What is wrong with you guys? Your playing like a bunch of amateurs. Golf is great exercise, especially climbing in and out of the golf cart. We have two choices: Ruin the environment with plastic bags, or use paper bags and kill trees. Every time I lend my friend a book he keeps it. He s a professional Book-Keeper. Mrs. Murphy went to a pet shop to buy a dog who had all his papers. She said to the pet store owner, Does this dog have a good pedigree? The pet store owner said, Mam, if this dog could talk, he wouldn t speak to either of us.

Romanos 10:8 JESÚS Y EL DEMONIO Como nos recuerda el Evangelio de hoy, el demonio tentó a Jesús con citas de la Sagrada Escritura: haz un milagro que te convenga. Véndete. Deslumbra a tus oyentes; el pueblo es ingenuo y novelero. Camina por estas sendas fáciles. El tentador trata de llevar a Jesús por la senda fácil pero resbalosa, ofreciéndole las soluciones fáciles pero falsas que siempre están a la mano. El demonio sabe lo que es bueno, pero no tiene la capacidad de hacer lo que es bueno, y menos aún de ser bueno. El demonio es la personificación del Mal, e intuye en Jesús la presencia más fuerte, y más genuinamente atractiva, de la santidad. El Evangelio de este domingo nos muestra al Mal expuesto y desenmascarado. Satanás sabe que se le ha acabado el juego. Hoy Jesús comienza a deshacer su tejido de mentiras, y a sanar a las almas, y al mundo entero. 6 February 14, 2016 Page 6 SCRIPTURE FOR LENT Beginning Tuesday, February 16th, Sr. Maura Power, R.S.M. will help us study St. Luke s Account of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. These sessions will be held on Tuesdays, in the Beatitude Room at 9:30am and repeated in the evenings at 7:15pm. Each session lasts 1 1/2 hours, with a break. Bring your Bibles. POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF MERCY Vern Psuty, D.D. (Louvain) and Sr. Maura Power, R.S.M. will lead us in a study of Mercy and Reconciliation. This six week course begins Wednesday, February 17th at 7:15pm in the Chapel and will culminate with the Celebration of God s Mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation on March 22nd. ~~ Some Of Our Catholic Traditions 1.
