Tom Lewandowski will come to our parish to talk about our July Mission trip to Appalachia. He will be available after the 11:00 AM on March 6th in the Church Hall to give more details and to field any questions about this exciting opportunity for works of mercy and love to our lessfortunate brothers and sisters. 3 February 14, 2016 PRIMER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Page 3 PARISH LIFE CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD AT 11:00 MASS EACH SUNDAY We will be starting a new ministry here at Miraculous Medal, the Children's Liturgy of the Word, for children (ages 4-8 years). This will take place each Sunday during the 11am. After the Opening Prayer of the, the children (ages 4-8) who are present will be called up to the altar by the priest and will be given a blessing. Then an adult leader will come forward and take the children downstairs to a specially prepared area and share with them the readings of the, as well as a message based on the readings. The children will pray their own Prayers of the Faithful and then return to their families during the Offertory of the. The Children's Liturgy of the Word is designed to make the Sunday readings and the Good News of Jesus more understandable to our young children. We want our children to know that they are special and that the is for them also. We are looking for adults and young adults who would be willing to be trained as Children's Liturgy of the Word leaders. No prior experience is needed, only a willingness to serve at least once or possibly twice a month. The only requirements are that you love God and love and care for his children. Also all Safe Environment clearances would be necessary for anyone over the age of 18, in order to serve as a leader. We are hoping to begin this new ministry on the last Sunday of February (February 28th). If you are interested in serving as a Children's Liturgy of the Word leader please call Father Carmen at the rectory. This will be a great opportunity to reach out to our little brothers and sisters and help them to understand the Readings of the at their own level. AROUND THE DIOCESE CALLED BY NAME COMMITTEE OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH The Called by Name Committee of Immaculate Conception Parish is sponsoring Landings, an 8 week series program that invites Catholics to return to their faith by attending and receiving the sacraments. We meet every Monday evening in the John F. Kennedy Middle School youth group room from 7pm to 8:30pm. The spring session begins February 8 through April 11. 4 February 14, 2016 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT Page 4 PARISH FAITH JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today s Gospel reminds us. Try a self-serving miracle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; people are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old soft-soap, the snake-oil solutions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personified, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive presence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soul-healing and world-healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renewing, recreative work and be made whole again. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today Lent begins. Ash Wednesday initiates the forty days of the Lenten fast, but since Sundays are not tallied in the days of fasting, today is the solemn opening of the forty days of Lent. The Church has work to do today, principally the calling forward of those chosen (the proper word is elected) for the Easter sacraments. Some of those who have been catechumens may now make a transition to a new way of life as the elect. For them, this Lent will be a time of purification and enlightenment. For us who accompany them, it is a time of helping them discern God s call and prepare for new life. This year, while the readings from the third year of the Lectionary cycle are usually read, they are set aside on certain Sundays for the benefit of the elect. We turn then to the readings from Year A, and we give those who journey to the font of baptism three extraordinary companions. In the Gospels for those days, we meet the woman of Samaria and the man born blind, and we come to the tomb of Lazarus three days after his death. Many bishops celebrate the Rite of Election on or near today, affirming God s choice for these new faithful, and also offering them the solidarity of many companions. In 2013, over 38,000 adults entered the baptismal waters in the United States, a remarkable testimony to the vigor of our tradition of receiving and nurturing adult faith. BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK LA FE DE LA PARROQUIA JESÚS Y EL DEMONIO Como nos recuerda el Evangelio de hoy, el demonio tentó a Jesús con citas de la Sagrada Escritura: haz un milagro que te convenga. Véndete. Deslumbra a tus oyentes; el pueblo es ingenuo y novelero. Camina por estas sendas fáciles. El tentador trata de llevar a Jesús por la senda fácil pero resbalosa, ofreciéndole las soluciones fáciles pero falsas que siempre están a la mano. El demonio sabe lo que es bueno, pero no tiene la capacidad de hacer lo que es bueno, y menos aún de ser bueno. El demonio es la personificación del Mal, e intuye en Jesús la presencia más fuerte, y más genuinamente atractiva, de la santidad. El Evangelio de este domingo nos muestra al Mal expuesto y desenmascarado. Satanás sabe que se le ha acabado el juego. Hoy Jesús comienza a deshacer su tejido de mentiras, y a sanar a las almas, y al mundo entero. Y en este tiempo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos invita a participar en esta labor de renovación, de nueva creación, y a dejar que Cristo nos sane. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Las cenizas que se nos pusieron en la frente el miércoles pasado ya están borradas, pero las palabras que nos dijeron deben sonar aún en nuestras almas. Tradicionalmente se dice: "Recuerda que del polvo venimos y al polvo retornaremos." Y aunque hoy en muchos lugares se dice: "Conviértete y cree en el Evangelio" el mensaje para oídos latinos es el mismo. Es un mensaje que nos saca de nuestro egoísmo recordándonos lo que los antiguos Toltecas ya sabían: esta vida es un sueño y el que muere despierta a la vida verdadera. Viviendo el Evangelio en esta vida nos prepara para la vida eterna. Las cenizas y esas frases dan un mensaje que lleva la imagen de la tierra que se somete para cultivarse. A veces la tierra se quema para que de sus cenizas venga vida nueva. Las cenizas que se nos pusieron no son para despreciar nuestra vida sino para amarla. De esa manera seremos cultivados por el ayuno, la oración y la caridad que hagamos durante la Cuaresma, sometiendo el polvo de nuestro cuerpo para dar fruto eterno. 5 February 14, 2016 PRIMER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Page 5 THE MESSAGE ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT TEMPTATION Someone once said that temptation arises when you re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. We ve heard this Gospel from Luke so many times that we are very familiar with it. Yet something new can always be perceived in this story. What strikes this reader this year is the way that Jesus uses the scriptures to answer his tempter each time. Even when the evil one quotes scripture to tempt Jesus, the Lord has a wise answer that shuts down his tempter. Today s Gospel reading shows us that even the devil can quote scripture for his own purposes. But a correct interpretation can shut the door on this kind of abuse of scripture. FORTY DAYS We can only imagine how hard a forty-day fast would be, and how hungry we would be afterward. To turn a stone into bread sounds like a harmless and reasonable suggestion. If we look elsewhere in the Gospels, however, we see Jesus enjoying many meals, but always in the company of others. He dines with Pharisees. He multiplies loaves and fishes for large crowds. He invites the disciples to join him for a breakfast on the beach after the Resurrection. We see him embrace eating as a communal act, always a sharing of self as well as a breaking of bread. Today he is being tempted to satisfy himself alone, ignoring that sharing of self that is so important. The second temptation is more obvious. To worship the devil is something that Jesus sees right through. He quotes scripture to silence his adversary. The third is the most grandiose. To rule the whole known world is a temptation to which many in our own day succumb. The devil even uses scripture for his own purposes here. Jesus quotes, with finality, the scripture that puts an end to the tempting. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Clergy Carmen A.
