2 From the Pastor April 24,, 2011 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord The New GIRM begins November 28, 2011 Will it be a New Mass? Happy Easter! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! In just 31 weeks we ll be using the new GIRM or revised General Instruction for the Roman Missal. That means we re about halfway through my yearlong series of bulletin articles which explains each revision in the Mass in detail. For past articles on these changes, or for more info, visit our parish website: As you ll be hearing me say often in the months to come: this Advent is an IDEAL time to invite fallen-away Catholics to come home and for those considering becoming Catholic to come onboard. Why? Once the Mass changes start this November, NO ONE will know for sure what to say! We ll all be stumbling for the right words and searching for the correct page; the people and priest will be bewildered and lost with their heads buried in missalettes or other worship guides as we try to learn the revised texts! So... spread the word to come and join us, for no one will stand out as a newcomer or visitor until we start to know the new translation by heart... which may take weeks or months... or even years! Another good thing about the revised translation is: we won t be able to rattle off our responses, at least for some time! The revised GIRM will REQUIRE us to pay close attention to what we now all-too-often just mindlessly recite! While Masses the first weekend of Advent this November will certainly be confusing as we stumble over the revisions, most of the awkward moments will be SOLELY in VERBAL responses, NOT any ritual ACTIONS. For the Mass itself it NOT changing; most revisions are in the English translation of the original Latin text which, except for a few minor adaptations, is the same text used since the 1960 s when the Mass DID go through radical changes in form and in text. Furthermore, there are very few changes in the people s parts; most changes are in the priest s parts, so pray for us priests who, no doubt, will be getting all tongue-tied and flustered when we begin using the new GIRM! The most profound change in the people s parts will be a response that is normally made 5 times during Mass; to the ordained minister s greeting The Lord be with you the people will reply And with your spirit - not And also with you. This less casual, more formal response better highlights the SPIRITUAL nature of the assembly. Nor does it address the priest personally, as if it is simply a holy hello; it will focus on the Holy Spirit who gathers us together! For the Holy Spirit is present in the entire congregation through the Sacrament of Baptism - and in the clergy through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The Nicene Creed [Profession of Faith] has been substantially changed; the new version uses very technical language that more accurately reflects the centuries of debate that were required to express the details of our Catholic Faith! The Apostles Creed will be only slightly altered, but unlike in the current rubrics which restrict its use to Children s Masses and the seasons of Lent and Easter, it may be used all year round. While none of the hymns or psalms we currently sing will change, there are subtle but significant retranslations of some Mass parts that should normally be sung: the Gloria, the Sanctus or Holy, Holy, and the Memorial Acclamations, which the revision calls the Mystery of Faith. The Lord s Prayer [ Our Father ] and people s conclusion of that venerable prayer [ For the kingdom... ] will not change at all, although the priest s expansion of the last part of the Lord s Prayer [ Deliver Us, Lord... ] will change slightly. Why all these changes and the use of more theologically deep terminology? The Catholic community has truly matured; we are radically different from Catholics just a hundred years ago, many of whom were uneducated, illiterate immigrants. As Saint Paul said, When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. [1 Corinthians 13:11] And since we ve finished mining the current translation, we must now dig deeper! So keep your hearts and minds open and spread the Good News that Christ is risen - and the Church is reforming its Mass translation so its time for all Catholics to come home! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Happy Easter! With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

Please complete the cut-off below and return it to us at the above address or drop it off in the collection basket during Saturday/Sunday Mass times. Name of Child: Primary Telephone: Address: School: BLESSED EASTER WATER Because of the generosity of COLLINS CALHOUN FUNERAL HOME - [201] containers of Holy Water will be available at the Baptismal Font after all Easter Masses. Please be sure to stop by and take ONE home with you. Thank you for all you do for us! COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS... Look around at your surroundings, your own body included. What can you add to your list of blessings? You might mention such joys as comfortable clothing, good health, satisfying work or a home to call your own. You have nourishing food, faithful family and friends, spiritual moorings? You may even discover less obvious blessings; for instance, a difficult relationship forces you to mature, or deep distress over violence spurs you to spread peace. Take some time to think about all the blessings in your life. When you recognize the abundance present in your life, you may find yourself greatly cheered during a dark time. But strangely, it may make you suddenly sad to realize that you have so much when others have so little. Our world s inequalities put you in a position to practice thanksgiving for what you have. Giving is an integral part of stewardship. Right now, you can make a difference in the lives of people in our Archdiocese by donating to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. This year with all our economic problems, especially high unemployment, more people than ever here in the Archdiocese of Newark, are relying on the Appeal for life s necessities. Visit to make a donation. You can also donate American Express Membership Reward points to make a donation to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Each donation of 1,000 points equals a $10.00 donation. If you already donated - thank you for making a difference. Questions? Call Lynn Gully [973] or gullylyn@rcan.org PRAY FOR OUR MILITARY Continue to pray for all the brave men and women who are defending our country. Keep them safe from all attacks and danger. Give them wisdom and strength in battle, help them to stay spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally strong and bring them safely home to their families. 4 SECOND COLLECTION The FIRST collection on Easter Sunday will be for your Easter Gift to the Church and the SECOND collection for your regular weekly offering. Though some disdain this financial talk the reality is: the Church needs your regular support and it needs your active, physical presence, for without you and your support, we could not be Church or make ends meet. As you consider your Easter gift to your parish, I ask you to check if your place of employment or retirement has a matching gift policy; this is a wonderful way to increase your sacrificial offering to your church! As always, I am grateful for your generosity, your concern and your interest. APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH Why should you be interested in this? The Catholic Church acknowledges that all people are made in the image of God, and further that all baptized people share in the life and mission of the Church. In affirming this, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the Pastoral Statement on People with Disabilities, which calls for the integration and fuller participation of people with disabilities into parish life. The department for Pastoral Ministry with Persons with Disabilities for the Newark Archdiocese exists to support this call for inclusion. At all times we should live the example Jesus gave to reach out in particular to people who are excluded and to recognize the gifts that all have to share. During the month of April in particular, please pray for families and people living with an autism spectrum disorder. Throughout the year other special intentions will be shared with you also. BRING BELLS TO THE HOLY THURSDAY, EASTER VIGIL AND EASTER SUNDAY MASSES! Psalm 81:1 tells us to Ring out your joy to God our strength. All are invited to bring handbells [any bell will do] to Mass on the Sunday's of Easter. An ancient custom calls for bells to be rung during the Gloria, the church s great hymn of praise on both those nights to mark our entrance into the Sacred Triduum on Holy Thursday night and to end the readings from the Old Testament during the Easter Vigil s liturgy of the Word and prepare us to hear the Good news of the new Covenant sealed with the blood of the risen Christ! The ringing of bells were so well received in previous years that this year we are asking you to bring them to all the Easter Masses. So, bring bells to ring during the Gloria and Let us come before the Lord with joyful song. [Psalm 100:2] ROSARY ALTAR BAKE SALE... April 30/May 1st! 5 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS Last chance for those in Inquiry: Don t forget the Rite of Acceptance: We have a FULL-YEAR catechumenate here in the Archdiocese. If anyone knows of anyone who is un-baptized and anticipates initiation at Easter, 2012, they need to go through the Rite of Acceptance ASAP! The policy of a year-long catechumenate applies only to the UN-BAPTIZED and is mentioned in paragraph #76 of the RCIA book. It is also specified in the National Statues on the Catechumenate in the back of the book (paragraph #6). RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Sessions for those who wish to become Catholic, or Catholics who wish to be confirmed should contact Mary Lanni [201] for details and information on the RCIA process. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL On the weekend of APRIL 30/May 1, our parish will be taking up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. This appeal supports missions here in the United States. It offers Catholics across our country a wonderful opportunity to help fellow Catholics practice their faith in such rugged areas as Alaska, Appalachia, the Deep South, the Rocky Mountain states, the Southwest, Puerto Rico and island dioceses in the Pacific and Caribbean. This Appeal is a practical way for our parish to share its faith and resources with the mission Church here at home. Over 95 cents of every dollar donated to the Appeal goes directly to the missions to keep church doors open, to support pastors in their priestly ministry and to provide basic pastoral services like religious education for children. Please give generously to assist fellow Catholics here in America. It s one practical way our parish community can be good stewards of God s gifts and make a difference. SPIRITUAL GIFT As your Spiritual Gift to your mother, grandmother, aunt, godmother, etc., think about having them remembered at a Novena of Masses offered in Saint Mary beginning on Saturday, May 7 th - 3:30 p.m. for Mother s Day. The names [both living and deceased] will remain on the Sanctuary during all masses and cards are available for you to give to those you ve remembered and donations can be made by contacting the Parish Office. Why not enrich someone with these blessings this Mother s Day! PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN Policies and Procedures Training is required for all adults working with youth at our parish. If you have not completed this training and are or PLAN TO BE a catechist or aide, CYO coach OR coach of a High School Sporting Team, part of our Children s Liturgy of the Word or Vacation Bible School [to name a few] you need to attend a session.
