That s one of the lessons communicated to the Officers of the Council when they are installed into office. If we, as an entire Council, are to be judged by our actions then now is our time to shine. September and October are always busy months for our Council as we execute the Soccer Challenge, Kickball Tournament Support, Felice Cuores, Developmental Disability Drive, Oktoberfest and start preparation for the Essay and Poster Contest. Are you going to wait to be asked to help or will you step forward on your own and do your part? I hope it s the latter as we need everyone s support to pull off each of these events for the betterment of our Parish and community. At the September membership meeting, I announced that Ron Huelsman is resigning as Treasurer at the end of this Fraternal year, July Ron has been invited to serve on the Archdiocesan Board for the Annual Catholic Appeal and is concerned that he would not be able to devote his full attention to both positions. The office of Worthy Treasurer is of vital importance to the success of our Council and Ron has done a flawless job for three years. We thank Ron for his service to our Council and now ask someone who is detail oriented to step forward. The primary functions of the Treasurer are to do the bookkeeping of the Council, write checks, deposit income at the Bank and ensure timely reimbursement to those who outlay funds for Council expenses. No accounting background is necessary. If you ve balanced a checkbook, you can do the job. Please contact me or one of the other Officers if you re interested. I m looking forward to an exciting couple of months. Thanks to each of you that volunteer for the events. For all the others, please join us! Vivat Jesus, Dan Schoenekase 1

Are you an Insurance member of the Knights of Columbus? Did you know that it was our Founders mission to ensure the financial protection and preparedness of every member and their families? In case you have not yet availed yourself of this tremendous opportunity, please read the below article. The Knights of Columbus recorded its 15th consecutive year of insurance sales growth in 2015, issuing more than $8.4 billion of individual life insurance. On November 3, 2015, the Knights of Columbus also surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force, cementing its position as one of the largest life insurers in North America. I firmly believe that our moral compass has helped guide us through a turbulent decade and an uncertain economy, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. While other companies were making ethically questionable and unnecessarily risky decisions, we were not.... We stayed true to our principles and knew that if we did the right thing for the right reasons, we would get the results that we wanted and with our 15th consecutive year of sales growth, we have. This year marks the third consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus was named a Worlds Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. The Knights was one of only three companies to receive that designation in the life insurance category. In August, the Knights of Columbus also earned the highest possible rating for financial strength, A++ (Superior), by ratings agency A.M. Best for the 40th consecutive year. Utilizing its professional field force of more than 1,500 agents across North America, the Knights of Columbus " which has one of the lowest lapse rates in the industry" offers a product line especially designed to meet the needs of Catholic families. The line provides life insurance, annuities, disability income and long-term care policies. Please contact your local Field Agent Ryan J Lister, FSCP,MBA General Agent RyanLister@KofC.Org The beauty of our annuity products lies squarely in their simplicity and security. Simple because they are backed by the Knights of Columbus, an organization the earns the highest ratings from independent rating services while maintaining high ethical standards. Our investment philosophy is consistent with the nature of the funds entrusted to us. We invest in vehicles that generate competitive rates for you while assuring absolute safety of your retirement nest egg. Whether you're looking to start a retirement savings program or moving substantial, more volatile funds into 'safer waters', the Knights of Columbus offers programs that can help you achieve your goals. About Knights of Columbus Annuities: Can be started with as little as $300 Amounts of $25,000 or more can be deposited with a 5- year interest rate guarantee Safety of principal guaranteed Can be used as either a tax-qualified account (registered) or non-tax qualified (non-registered) account, offering the potential for deferred taxation of earnings and tax advantages [Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP, TSA in the US]. Competitive payout options when you decide to use the funds for retirement income, including options that provide income for your lifetime - no matter how long you live. Insurance Protection from a Name You Know and Can Trust Since 1882, the Knights of Columbus has provided products to assure the welfare of its members and their families. Today, we are recognized as a leading life insurer with a superior insurance program, offering permanent and term insurance, retirement products, disability income and long-term care plans. In the past 2 months, we have seen how devastating hurricanes can be with the damage done in the Houston area from Hurricane Harvey, the damage in Florida from Hurricane Irma, and the devastation in Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands from Hurricane Maria. Responding to the following message we received from KofC Supreme, our council donated $500 to Columbian Charities for the efforts in Houston. In addition, we have also committed to donating and additional $500 to purchase gift cards for the Houston area Catholic Churches in an effort started by our brother Knight, Henry Saur. Brother Knight, Many people in the Gulf Coast of Texas are reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey this weekend. Thousands have evacuated their homes, many of which have been damaged or destroyed. The recovery process is going to be a long and painful one, and your support is urgently needed. Please DONATE TODAY to help those suffering such devastation. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to relief efforts. This includes providing immediate needs such as food, clean water, shelter and other necessities. God bless you for your support. Knights of Columbus 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven, CT

A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful K of C program is more than the words you see written here or in any Supreme Council publication. It s more than a suggestion at a meeting. A program needs people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in a way that works. If you are not now actively involved in our council activities or if you want to increase your involvement, now is a great time to become an active member. If you are not interested being the director of a program or a committee, you can become a member of a committee. The four Principles upon which the Knights of Columbus were founded are: Charity: - To share our time, talents and treasures with those in need. Unity: To work together to accomplish deeds not achievable individually. Fraternity: To aid our Brother and his family Patriotism: To serve and honor our country in the Church and in the community. All of the Programs and committees are formed around these principles. WRYT 1080 AM KHOJ 1460 AM Evangelizing the Catholic Faith through Radio Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities (Tootsie Roll Drive) The annual Campaign for Children with Developmental Disabilities, which is also known as the Tootsie Roll Drive, will be October 6-8. Each year, we come to together to raise money for this wonderful cause. The funds go towards the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. See the article below on our council s participation in the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. We should be proud of what this institution has accomplished. It was the first multidisciplinary autism center in St. Louis. Their team includes experts in developmental pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, psychology, clinical nursing, speech-language pathology, and occupational therapy. They provide family resources, social services, education coordination, research and support. This is a local institution which means that the money raised will help kids and their families in our own communities. Indeed, it is very possible that you know or have interacted with kids that benefit from this very service when you have gone to a Cardinals game, Blues game, the Zoo, Faust Park, or the Muny. This year, we will be collecting at Dierberg's in Manchester, Straub's on Clayton Road, and after weekend masses. We are asking each Knight to take a 90- minute shift to help collect money and hand out tootsie rolls. Please see the Sign- Up Genius to volunteer. In 2015 the Christ, Prince of Peace KofC Council made a five-year $1,000 per year commitment to the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. On Wednesday, September 6 th our DGK Vince Klein and Treasurer Ron Huelsmann visited the Center. They were given a complete tour of the facility and were truly amazed by the advancements in neonatal care including the ability for surgeons to operate on an un-born child while it is still in the womb or to remove the child, surgically repair a defect, and return it to the womb. 6

Fraternity and Insurance: A Life-Changing Combination One hundred and thirty-five years ago, Father Michael J. McGivney worked to protect Catholic families. Now, in 2017, Father McGivney s mission has taken on several different shapes and services, including charitable works, evangelical missions, catechetical programs and, of course, our insurance program. Together, these things form the core of the Knights of Columbus. Guided always by our fraternal principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, we are most effective when the different aspects of our organization operate in conjunction with each other. When the Knights who lead our programs work together, the results can be truly life changing not just locally, but globally. This summer, as we embark on a new fraternal year, spend time with your field agent and general agent to coordinate your activities. Your Knights of Columbus Insurance agents are tremendous resources for you and your council. For these men, the Knights of Columbus is more than just a career, it s a vocation, and they are deeply committed to furthering Father McGivney s mission in all its facets. Ask for their help with membership drives during Sunday Masses. Seek out their assistance with various committees and fundraisers. Lean on them to help supply manpower for hands-on charitable events. Open the door and welcome them. Invite them to full participation in your council life. Remember, these men work tirelessly to serve the members in their area. Although they may not always be able to take part in each and every initiative, they want to be involved with their councils as much as possible. As a professionally trained Knights of Columbus field agent, your agent brings tremendous value to your council and to your members. He also brings with him a full product portfolio of high quality insurance products. He holds the key to the greatest fraternal benefit of all: the insurance program. The men in your council will no doubt be at various stages of life, with varying needs and varying means. Nevertheless, at some point in their lives, surely most of them will look for life insurance protection, retirement products, disability income or long-term care insurance. When they do, why would they look anywhere besides their very own Knights of Columbus? But the truth is, many of your council s members probably don t think about our insurance business. They may have met with a field agent once or twice during their time as Knights, but they probably don t know about our current full line of products. They probably don t know about our $100 billion of life insurance in force. They probably don t know about our consecutive years of receiving the highest possible rating for financial strength, A++ (Superior), from A.M. Best. They probably don t know about our being named a World s Most Ethical Company in 2014, 2015, 2016 and They may not even know of Father McGivney s vision of financial protection for Catholic families. But they should. When your members are in the market for insurance products, they have a choice. They can purchase from one of more than 1,500 life insurance companies in North America who will do whatever they choose with their premium dollars and invest in whatever offers them the best returns. Or, they can purchase from their Knights of Columbus, who will invest ethically and donate generously. It s what we call The Catholic Difference. What would it mean to your members to know that the money they spend protecting their family, preserving their retirement, guarding against the financial strain of a disability or providing for long-term care goes to an organization that supports the Church? To an organization that has donated more than $1.5 billion to charity in the past decade? What would it mean to your members to know that their insurance purchase will someday not only change the lives of their family, but maybe even the lives of families halfway across the world? Invite your field agent to talk about the Catholic difference. Set up a fraternal benefits night where he can address the council on our slate of products and the benefits that they bring to Catholic families. Welcome him as a Knight. He, too, is deeply committed not only to protecting Catholic families financially, but also to standing up for the marginalized, standing up for the poor and standing with the Church. New years are times for new resolutions. As you embark on the fraternal year, resolve to incorporate your field agent into your council life so that your members have the opportunity to profit from our greatest fraternal benefit.

Knights of Columbus Emblem The emblem of the Order dates from the second Supreme Council meeting on May , when it was designed by James T. Mullen, who was then Supreme Knight. A quick glance at the emblem indicates a shield mounted upon the Formee Cross. The shield is that associated with a medieval Knight. The Formee Cross is the representation of a traditionally artistic design of the Cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This then represents the Catholic spirit of the Order. Mounted on the Shield are three objects: a fasces standing vertically, and, crossed behind it, an anchor and a dagger or short sword. The fasces from Roman days is symbolic of authority which must exist in any tightlybonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner s symbol for Columbus, patron of the Order, while the short sword or dagger was the weapon of the Knight when engaged upon an errand of mercy. Thus, the shield expresses Catholic Knighthood in organized merciful action, and with the letters K. of C., it proclaims this specific form of activity. The red, white and blue in the background of the shield and the foreground of the Cross of Malta are the colors of our country. As such, red is the symbol of stout-hearted courage, of pulsing activity and a full measure of devotion. Blue is the symbol of hope, of calm and tranquility under God and of confidence in the protection of our country. White is the symbol of nobility of purpose, of purity of aim and of crucible tried ideals to be carried out. Bur there is another symbolism of color in red, white and blue. This is the ecclesiastical symbolism in which red becomes the reflection of the drips of Christ s redemptive blood shed upon Calvary, and of the martyr s blood shed in defense of the faith. Red then is the symbol of Faith, of belief in Christ, in the Redemption and in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. White is the color of the Eucharistic Host, pledge of God s Eucharistic presence among men, of the infinite love God has for man and the overwhelming affection which the God-man has for each individual. White then is the symbol of Christ-like Charity. Blue is the color of Our Lady s mantle, in which she wrapped her beloved Son, through Whom came salvation to a sinful world. Blue is then the symbol of Hope. Website Team Member Needed Are you a member of the Christ Prince of Peace Knights and would like to get more involved in the activities our council? Do you have any knowledge or experience with websites? Well, we have just what you are looking for. We have a great website and a small team that works very hard to keep it up-to-date. Recently, one of our team members had to step back on his involvement. We are looking for someone to help with designing, and developing new ideas to keep the website fresh. Please contact Mike Shea at if you are interested.
