I m pleased to confirm that we were only one of about thirty Councils in Missouri to earn the Star Council award. Certainly, we ve accomplished a lot over the past year and have many more charitable works on the calendar for this year. We ll need the help of all Brothers to continue to be successful. It is the time of year when the kids are almost back in school, football training camp is underway and VOLUNTEERS are needed for the many Knights events taking place over the coming months Church Mulching Project, Kickball Tournament, Soccer Challenge, Oktoberfest, etc. One of the things that I like best about our Council is that we don t pressure or force members to volunteer. Instead, we rely on the nature of the good works we perform and the fun we have with each other doing them for members to participate. If you are a Brother that feels like you haven t gotten anything out of the Knights, please join us in volunteering for one of the upcoming events even for just a shift or two. It doesn t matter if your dues are in arrears or if you haven t shown up for a meeting or any other event in months or years. Looking for more? We have numerous events and committees that need a leader. As a busy guy myself, I understand that members have a lot of competing demands on their time, but none of the open leadership positions require a significant amount of time. By increasing the number of leaders and volunteers in the Council we can have a greater impact on our Parish and our community. Vivat Jesus, Dan Schoenekase 1

Are you an Insurance member of the Knights of Columbus? Did you know that it was our Founders mission to ensure the financial protection and preparedness of every member and their families? In case you have not yet availed yourself of this tremendous opportunity, please read the below article. The Knights of Columbus recorded its 15th consecutive year of insurance sales growth in 2015, issuing more than $8.4 billion of individual life insurance. On November 3, 2015, the Knights of Columbus also surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force, cementing its position as one of the largest life insurers in North America. I firmly believe that our moral compass has helped guide us through a turbulent decade and an uncertain economy, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. While other companies were making ethically questionable and unnecessarily risky decisions, we were not.... We stayed true to our principles and knew that if we did the right thing for the right reasons, we would get the results that we wanted and with our 15th consecutive year of sales growth, we have. This year marks the third consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus was named a Worlds Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. The Knights was one of only three companies to receive that designation in the life insurance category. In August, the Knights of Columbus also earned the highest possible rating for financial strength, A++ (Superior), by ratings agency A.M. Best for the 40th consecutive year. Utilizing its professional field force of more than 1,500 agents across North America, the Knights of Columbus " which has one of the lowest lapse rates in the industry" offers a product line especially designed to meet the needs of Catholic families. The line provides life insurance, annuities, disability income and long-term care policies. Please contact your local Field Agent Ryan J Lister, FSCP,MBA General Agent RyanLister@KofC.Org The beauty of our annuity products lies squarely in their simplicity and security. Simple because they are backed by the Knights of Columbus, an organization the earns the highest ratings from independent rating services while maintaining high ethical standards. Our investment philosophy is consistent with the nature of the funds entrusted to us. We invest in vehicles that generate competitive rates for you while assuring absolute safety of your retirement nest egg. Whether you're looking to start a retirement savings program or moving substantial, more volatile funds into 'safer waters', the Knights of Columbus offers programs that can help you achieve your goals. About Knights of Columbus Annuities: Can be started with as little as $300 Amounts of $25,000 or more can be deposited with a 5- year interest rate guarantee Safety of principal guaranteed Can be used as either a tax-qualified account (registered) or non-tax qualified (non-registered) account, offering the potential for deferred taxation of earnings and tax advantages [Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP, TSA in the US]. Competitive payout options when you decide to use the funds for retirement income, including options that provide income for your lifetime - no matter how long you live. Insurance Protection from a Name You Know and Can Trust Since 1882, the Knights of Columbus has provided products to assure the welfare of its members and their families. Today, we are recognized as a leading life insurer with a superior insurance program, offering permanent and term insurance, retirement products, disability income and long-term care plans. The following note was received James Ferris, a field agent with KofC Insurance: (Article is printed at the end of this newsletter) I came across this article (link, above) from Supreme this morning and ask that you send it to all of the officers in your councils today and also review it at each of your upcoming council meetings. While I've deeply enjoyed my time working as a Field Agent the last 10 months, I need to ensure that I see every member at least once annually. This has not been happening consistently to date. No one is obligated to buy life or income protection through the Knights. However I need to be able to meet with all members to help them understand what the Knights can do for them and their families. Too often - even among our council leadership - an invitation for even a 15-minute annual meeting with me is never accepted or refused outright. I'm not sure that the mission of the Knights and how our insurance program ties to that is fully understood. I don't work for just another company trying to get our members hard-earned money and time. I am a brother Knight that represents THEIR Order. Knights of Columbus Insurance is THEIR company! And never forget - we offer the CATHOLIC DIFFERENCE in the solutions we provide as well as how we invest. Not only that, but no insurance company is higher rated in financial strength than the Knights of Columbus, and the Knights have been rated the most ethical insurance company globally over the last 4 consecutive years. Insurance is why our Order was founded, and it is through the partnership of Insurance and our Fraternity that we have been able to accomplish so many amazing things for our Church, our members and those in need across the globe. I need your support and the complete support of our council leaders and membership in order to do my part. Thanks, Jim 5

A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful K of C program is more than the words you see written here or in any Supreme Council publication. It s more than a suggestion at a meeting. A program needs people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in a way that works. If you are not now actively involved in our council activities or if you want to increase your involvement, now is a great time to become an active member. If you are not interested being the director of a program or a committee, you can become a member of a committee. The four Principles upon which the Knights of Columbus were founded are: Charity: - To share our time, talents and treasures with those in need. Unity: To work together to accomplish deeds not achievable individually. Fraternity: To aid our Brother and his family Patriotism: To serve and honor our country in the Church and in the community. All of the Programs and committees are formed around these principles. WRYT 1080 AM KHOJ 1460 AM Evangelizing the Catholic Faith through Radio Knights of Columbus District 54 Meeting Greg Mathiesen and I attended the 7/19/19 District 54 Meeting. Here are Highlights from the meeting: Fraternal Year Quota is 13 Membership (up one from last year), 5 Insurance Along with Knight and Families of the Month, we are encouraged to nominate Youth of the Month to State for recognition and awards. They suggest we sell 20 tickets by Labor Day. State is also requesting donations to benefit the Training for Life Campus. I suggest we again combine 10/7 Oktoberfest with our KofC Membership drive. We have admissions degree on 10/17. Tootsie Roll drive if 10/6-8. Orders are due 8/25. Jim at council 991 may try to coordinate a District 54 thank-you add to hosting businesses in The Review. Soccer Challenge: Council in Sept., District 10/1-15 (they asked us to host). Free Throw Challenge: council is January, Districts is 2/1-15. They want to focus on coats for Kids in September ($220/case). There is a Patriotic (4 TH ) on 3/3/18 at St. Louis Hilton. Don Allen, St. Louis West Recruitment and New Membership Director, suggested coordinating Council transfers with our field Agent to help clear roster of Brothers that have moved. Don also suggested that we are all in charge of membership. Simple sit in different area in church and invite a new face to join the Knights with as little as 2 hours/year. Dick Kobylski, St. Louis South Recruitment and New Membership Director, (re-)introduced Msgr. Joseph Mancuso Catholic Education Grant Program for school and PSR catholic education. I think we should get a new guy to run this for the new Principal and PSR director. Dick also suggested Dick also offered to present at Business Meeting after new installation to help define new officer responsibilities. recruitmentslts@mokofc.org Mike Koehler, St. Louis Archdioceses Church Chairman, suggested Theology on Tap for younger brothers (or just like beer and God!) Ryan Lister, General Field Agent, suggested a parish wide benefits night focused on general financial planning and retirement. Ryan confirmed that Dave Henry is transitioning to retirement by mid- August. Please check out and like his Facebook page at If you are going to the Convention, please make sure you have registered and bring your current membership card. Thanks, Kurtis Suellentrop 6

Fraternity and Insurance: A Life-Changing Combination One hundred and thirty-five years ago, Father Michael J. McGivney worked to protect Catholic families. Now, in 2017, Father McGivney s mission has taken on several different shapes and services, including charitable works, evangelical missions, catechetical programs and, of course, our insurance program. Together, these things form the core of the Knights of Columbus. Guided always by our fraternal principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism, we are most effective when the different aspects of our organization operate in conjunction with each other. When the Knights who lead our programs work together, the results can be truly life changing not just locally, but globally. This summer, as we embark on a new fraternal year, spend time with your field agent and general agent to coordinate your activities. Your Knights of Columbus Insurance agents are tremendous resources for you and your council. For these men, the Knights of Columbus is more than just a career, it s a vocation, and they are deeply committed to furthering Father McGivney s mission in all its facets. Ask for their help with membership drives during Sunday Masses. Seek out their assistance with various committees and fundraisers. Lean on them to help supply manpower for hands-on charitable events. Open the door and welcome them. Invite them to full participation in your council life. Remember, these men work tirelessly to serve the members in their area. Although they may not always be able to take part in each and every initiative, they want to be involved with their councils as much as possible. As a professionally trained Knights of Columbus field agent, your agent brings tremendous value to your council and to your members. He also brings with him a full product portfolio of high quality insurance products. He holds the key to the greatest fraternal benefit of all: the insurance program. The men in your council will no doubt be at various stages of life, with varying needs and varying means. Nevertheless, at some point in their lives, surely most of them will look for life insurance protection, retirement products, disability income or long-term care insurance. When they do, why would they look anywhere besides their very own Knights of Columbus? But the truth is, many of your council s members probably don t think about our insurance business. They may have met with a field agent once or twice during their time as Knights, but they probably don t know about our current full line of products. They probably don t know about our $100 billion of life insurance in force. They probably don t know about our consecutive years of receiving the highest possible rating for financial strength, A++ (Superior), from A.M. Best. They probably don t know about our being named a World s Most Ethical Company in 2014, 2015, 2016 and They may not even know of Father McGivney s vision of financial protection for Catholic families. But they should. When your members are in the market for insurance products, they have a choice. They can purchase from one of more than 1,500 life insurance companies in North America who will do whatever they choose with their premium dollars and invest in whatever offers them the best returns. Or, they can purchase from their Knights of Columbus, who will invest ethically and donate generously. It s what we call The Catholic Difference. What would it mean to your members to know that the money they spend protecting their family, preserving their retirement, guarding against the financial strain of a disability or providing for long-term care goes to an organization that supports the Church? To an organization that has donated more than $1.5 billion to charity in the past decade? What would it mean to your members to know that their insurance purchase will someday not only change the lives of their family, but maybe even the lives of families halfway across the world? Invite your field agent to talk about the Catholic difference. Set up a fraternal benefits night where he can address the council on our slate of products and the benefits that they bring to Catholic families. Welcome him as a Knight. He, too, is deeply committed not only to protecting Catholic families financially, but also to standing up for the marginalized, standing up for the poor and standing with the Church. New years are times for new resolutions. As you embark on the fraternal year, resolve to incorporate your field agent into your council life so that your members have the opportunity to profit from our greatest fraternal benefit.

Knights of Columbus Emblem The emblem of the Order dates from the second Supreme Council meeting on May , when it was designed by James T. Mullen, who was then Supreme Knight. A quick glance at the emblem indicates a shield mounted upon the Formee Cross. The shield is that associated with a medieval Knight. The Formee Cross is the representation of a traditionally artistic design of the Cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This then represents the Catholic spirit of the Order. Mounted on the Shield are three objects: a fasces standing vertically, and, crossed behind it, an anchor and a dagger or short sword. The fasces from Roman days is symbolic of authority which must exist in any tightlybonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner s symbol for Columbus, patron of the Order, while the short sword or dagger was the weapon of the Knight when engaged upon an errand of mercy. Thus, the shield expresses Catholic Knighthood in organized merciful action, and with the letters K. of C., it proclaims this specific form of activity. The red, white and blue in the background of the shield and the foreground of the Cross of Malta are the colors of our country. As such, red is the symbol of stout-hearted courage, of pulsing activity and a full measure of devotion. Blue is the symbol of hope, of calm and tranquility under God and of confidence in the protection of our country. White is the symbol of nobility of purpose, of purity of aim and of crucible tried ideals to be carried out. Bur there is another symbolism of color in red, white and blue. This is the ecclesiastical symbolism in which red becomes the reflection of the drips of Christ s redemptive blood shed upon Calvary, and of the martyr s blood shed in defense of the faith. Red then is the symbol of Faith, of belief in Christ, in the Redemption and in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. White is the color of the Eucharistic Host, pledge of God s Eucharistic presence among men, of the infinite love God has for man and the overwhelming affection which the God-man has for each individual. White then is the symbol of Christ-like Charity. Blue is the color of Our Lady s mantle, in which she wrapped her beloved Son, through Whom came salvation to a sinful world. Blue is then the symbol of Hope.
