Happy Holidays. Tis the season. Merry Christmas. Brothers, We have much to be thankful for this holiday season. This Thanksgiving I hope many of you can take the time and reflect on the many blessing in your life. Recently, I attended Felice Cuores with my family in November. It was very moving to see so many smiling faces enjoying themselves as well as all the hard work that the Knights do to put on a great event for the individuals who attend. I was very thankful for all the volunteers that helped put the event on. On December 15th, I would love for another strong showing of volunteers at the Felice Cuores Christmas Party at St. Claire. I hear Santa is a special guy. We now turn our attention to Christmas by preparing ourselves through Advent. Advent is a time where we begin the journey that ends with a celebration of our Savior. Participating in the Parish Advent Prayer Services in December will be a great way to spend time reflecting. Recently our golf tournament was a huge success and with of the help of many Brothers coordinating and supporting the cause it would not have been such a success. In other great things happening in our council is our November Coat Drive. I pray we can bring a smile to those who are cold and need warmth this winter. Also, a great event to get in the Advent spirit will be Advent by Taillight on December 8th. Another, upcoming event that I hope you will join me for is the Knights Christmas party that will be held at Hotshots on December 19th at 6:30pm. Our Council will enjoy fellowship and celebrate this joyous season. Past Grand Knight and Social Czar Pat Brennan has guaranteed that everyone will leave filled with the holiday spirit. Please join us for this party (it doesn t matter if you haven t been to a Knight s event in years)! Last, I would like to urge anyone who is a First Degree to join your other brothers on January 20th for the 2nd and 3rd Degree to full knighthood at Incarnate Word. I am sure we can have a significant showing and continue our development as Knights. Merry Christmas to each of you and your families. Make it a great day! Brother Knights, As reported by Felice Cuores Chairman Bill Lukas the October dance "may have been the busiest and most exciting party ever." Guests were treated to glow necklaces and Halloween decorated cookies. There were 214 guests and 31 volunteers. 20 guests had to be turned away. The number of volunteers was down considerably from last month. This applies as well to Council We had only 2, the old standbys: Rod Schnurr and Carl Schiley. The November Felice Cuores dance was as exciting as ever for the 186 guests. Besides the typical entertainment of music and snacks the KofC Clown Club was there providing balloon art and painted faces. The number of volunteers for the dance and for Council rebounded well compared to October. There were 44 total and 12 from Council Those from our council were: Dave Christoff, Judy Christoff, Jackie Leonard, Mike Leonard, Renzo Dreon, Vince Klein, Carrie Klein, Patrick Klein, Caleb Klein, Kurtis Suellentrop, Michael Suellentrop, and Rodney Schnurr. Felice Cuores is quite an organization. This its sixteenth year. In that time at total of 13,935 guests have been entertained by 4,936 volunteers. 5 Knights of Columbus Service Programs A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful K of C program is more than the words you see written here or in any Supreme Council publication. It s more than a suggestion at a meeting. A program needs people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in a way that works. If you are not now actively involved in our council activities or if you want to increase your involvement, now is a great time to become an active member. If you are not interested being the director of a program or a committee, you can become a member of a committee. The four Principles upon which the Knights of Columbus were founded are: Charity: - To share our time, talents and treasures with those in need. Unity: To work together to accomplish deeds not achievable individually. Fraternity: To aid our Brother and his family Patriotism: To serve and honor our country in the Church and in the community. All of the Programs and committees are formed around these principles. Being a Knight & Serving a Ministry Brother Knights, our parish (Christ, Prince of Peace) is extending an invitation to you to sign up and become more active in your church. Most if not all of you attend weekend mass and you must have noticed by now, that there are some gaping holes our ministry ranks of Ushers, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (EM). Lectors, Choir, and Sacristans. None of these positions are difficult but they are very necessary to help keep our Church and inviting place to come and worship. Since you are attending mass anyway, please think and pray about which position[s] you feel you can best serve and let me know. I will be happy to put you in the que for whichever ministry[s] you choose. Here is a short description of each position: Usher: Arrive at mass minutes before each mass. Put on your KOC name badge. Greet your fellow parishioners and hand them a worship guide. Assist in distributing the baskets at the collection and then help bag the offerings to be put into the safe. Following mass, hand out the weekly bulletins. There is no special training involved. EM: Apply hand sanitizer and stand at the base of the alter until after the celebrant consumes the precious blood and then proceed to the back of the alter to receive communion and then you receive either a plate or a cup. Go to your assigned spot and distribute either the body or blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ. There is no special training involved. Lectors: You will be assigned either the 1 st or 2 nd reading. Go up to the Ambo and deliver the message in a thoughtful and reverent manner. If you need special training in public speaking, let me know and I promise you it will be painless and rewarding. Choir: If you can sing, please contact Greg Mathiesen. Sacristan: This position sets up the necessary items that the celebrant requires to celebrate Mass, i.e.; Cups, Plates, Cruets, Purificators. This position does require some training but again, it s minimal. Arrive minutes early. So, come on, join in the fun, help celebrate mass in an even more rewarding way than just being an attendant. 6 Are you an Insurance member of the Knights of Columbus? Did you know that it was our Founders mission to ensure the financial protection and preparedness of every member and their families? In case you have not yet availed yourself of this tremendous opportunity, please read the below article. The Knights of Columbus recorded its 17th consecutive year of insurance sales growth in 2017, issuing more than $8.4 billion of individual life insurance. On November 3, 2015, the Knights of Columbus also surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force, cementing its position as one of the largest life insurers in North America. I firmly believe that our moral compass has helped guide us through a turbulent decade and an uncertain economy, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. While other companies were making ethically questionable and unnecessarily risky decisions, we were not.... We stayed true to our principles and knew that if we did the right thing for the right reasons, we would get the results that we wanted and with our 15th consecutive year of sales growth, we have. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus was named a Worlds Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. The Knights was one of only three companies to receive that designation in the life insurance category. In September, the Knights of Columbus also earned the highest possible rating for financial strength, A++ (Superior), by ratings agency A.M. Best for the 40th consecutive year. Utilizing its professional field force of more than 1,500 agents across North America, the Knights of Columbus " which has one of the lowest lapse rates in the industry" offers a product line especially designed to meet the needs of Catholic families. The line provides life insurance, annuities, disability income and long-term care policies. 7 Eucharistic Adoration Benediction Rosary prior to our Monthly Council Meetings A Higher Purpose Encourage deep personal encounter with God. Knights of Columbus councils work with their pastors to organize a regular Holy Hour of eucharistic adoration. Prepared for the men of the parish, this Holy Hour could include a reflection, communal rosary, prayers for intercession by St. Joseph or Knights of Columbus founder, Venerable Michael McGivney, and various other aspects as decided by the council. Overview The chivalric character of the Knights of Columbus and the Church s long tradition of spiritual combat resonate with men today especially as threats from the world and the devil are so keenly felt. Eucharistic adoration in the form of a regularly scheduled Holy Hour is a simple, direct, and meaningful way to address these needs. It is familiar to many, easy to organize, and something everyone can participate in together regardless of age, vocation, stage of life or membership status. Councils can organize their Holy Hours in a variety of ways and incorporate aspects such as: perpetual adoration, the sacrament of reconciliation, prayer for particular intentions and more.. In the Spirit of the Knights of Columbus programs of Faith In Action and Building the Domestic Church, the Christ, Prince of Peace KofC Council will be participating in the Parish Eucharistic Adoration prior to the General Council meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. This will be in addition to the Rosary that we are already reciting. Through the efforts of our assistant Chaplain, Deacon Pat Belding, with the cooperation of our Chaplain and Pastor, Fr. Chris Dunlap, the usual Tuesday Eucharistic Adoration will be extended on the Third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 PM until about 6:50 PM with Benediction until 7:00 PM. Following Benediction, The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM, with the General Council meeting beginning at 7:30 PM. All Knights are asked and encouraged to arrive at 6:30 PM (or earlier) for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament followed by Benediction and the Rosary. What is the Domestic Church It is believing that how you live your faith in your councils, families, parishes and community has a ripple effect that changes the world. It is the council, the family and the parish that knows that everything they do must be based in surrendering prayer. It describes the imperfect family and council who deliberately chooses to live contrary to what seems like a Godless world and says, In our home, council and parish, we choose to live our faith. It is the family and council who prays together, goes to Mass weekly, frequents the Sacrament of Confession and (because they realize they are powerless without God), deliberately avoids that which pollutes their minds and hearts. It is the imperfect, humble and joy-filled family and council that rarely preaches the faith because they are too busy living it. See the Monthly challenge from the Supreme Chaplain on the next page of this newsletter. 7

12 Knights of Columbus Monthly Challenge from the Supreme Chaplain November 2018 Jesus said to his disciples, In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Gospel for Nov. 18, Mk. 13:24, 32) There s an old country Gospel song with a catchy refrain that asks this question: What would you do if Jesus came to spend the day with you? As Advent quickly approaches, the Church invites us to ponder this question and prepare our hearts and souls accordingly. We frantically prepare for Christmas, buying gifts and decorating our homes. But will we prepare our soul with the same sense of urgency, purpose, and care? Advent is a sobering time of reflection on the second coming of Jesus. What would you do if Jesus came to spend the day with you? Soon he will. May we meet him with open arms and pure hearts. Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori: This month, recalling that we do not know the day or the hour, I challenge you to go to confession, and make a commitment to go monthly thereafter as a means of maintaining vigilant care over your soul. Secondly I challenge you in the coming month to forgive someone who has hurt you in some way. Catholic Men for Christ 12

13 Faith In Action - A New Model for a New Age Revised program takes effect during the fraternal year, replacing Surge with Service. Faith In Action arrived on July 1st to bring a new focus on faith, family, community and life to councils worldwide. The first change of this kind since 1971, the model more fully integrates Christcentered family programs into daily council activities. Faith In Action is straightforward and easy to implement. It provides all Knights the opportunity to do what they do best: stand shoulder to shoulder as a force for good in their home, parish, community and the world. Faith In Action makes clear the roles and requirements of all Supreme Council-recommended programs. It offers a stronger call to action, better inspiring Knights to lead their families and parishes in quality, faith-filled family programs. It is divided into four categories of programs: Faith, Family, Community and Life. They represent our main priorities as an Order: The primary goal is to strengthen our men and their families in the Catholic faith. We also emphasize the vital role that a devout and loyal family plays in modern society. Additionally, a critical part of our mission as Knights is to spread a spirit of charity and service throughout our community. Finally, both as Knights of Columbus and as followers of Christ, we have an obligation to be committed to the defense of life in all its stages and in every condition (St. John Paul II).
