Regardless of political affiliation, many of us would agree that the election process is not only highlighting divisions that exist within our country, but exacerbating them at the same time. While vigorous debate between candidates seeking our trust to hold public office is a critical component of an election, the manner in which that debate takes place does not need to sink as low as it has. For me, I rapidly tire of candidates who speak to the lowest common denominator (by education and socio-economic position) of the American people in a manner that manipulates them without any substantive policy discussion. Those candidates (both Republican and Democrat) fill their speeches with messages of fear and distrust to prey on those who are unable or unlikely to educate themselves on the important issues facing our nation. As I reflect on the Knights of Columbus and our Council in particular, I wonder what role the Knights can play in helping to mend some of the divisiveness. To that end, I believe that the Knights must continue to serve as an example to others that a group of diverse political beliefs can unite in the charitable support of our fellow man. Second, the Knights must use our organization power at the local, national and international level to ward off any attempts to associate our Brotherhood with any particular political party. Instead, the example we set by remaining loyal to our Catholic identity should generate a spirit of hope in others that our collective American future can be positively shaped through by respecting and helping one another. Happy Thanksgiving to each of you and your families. Vivat Jesus, Dan Schoenekase 1

Religious Information Bureau The Religious Information Bureau (RIB) is the Missouri Knights of Columbus's evangelical arm -- our way of proclaiming the "good news" of our faith to our non- Catholic brethren and to those of us who thirst for continuing knowledge of the Catholic Faith. Through our support of the RIB, we are sharing our faith with those who want to learn more about the Catholic Church. The Permanent Display in the Narthex has been recently re-supplied with all of the booklets that are available through the RIB. Please stop by. Every year a portion of your annual dues ($7.50) is applied to the Religious Information Bureau and 2 times each year a letter is sent to all of the Knights in the state requesting additional financial support. 3

5 Are you an Insurance member of the Knights of Columbus? Did you know that it was our Founders mission to ensure the financial protection and preparedness of every member and their families? In case you have not yet availed yourself of this tremendous opportunity, please read the below article. The Knights of Columbus recorded its 15th consecutive year of insurance sales growth in 2015, issuing more than $8.4 billion of individual life insurance. On November 3, 2015 the Knights of Columbus also surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force, cementing its position as one of the largest life insurers in North America. I firmly believe that our moral compass has helped guide us through a turbulent decade and an uncertain economy, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. While other companies were making ethically questionable and unnecessarily risky decisions, we were not.... We stayed true to our principles and knew that if we did the right thing for the right reasons, we would get the results that we wanted and with our 15th consecutive year of sales growth, we have. This year marks the third consecutive year that the Knights of Columbus was named a Worlds Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute. The Knights was one of only three companies to receive that designation in the life insurance category. In August, the Knights of Columbus also earned the highest possible rating for financial strength, A++ (Superior), by ratings agency A.M. Best for the 40th consecutive year. Utilizing its professional field force of more than 1,500 agents across North America, the Knights of Columbus " which has one of the lowest lapse rates in the industry" offers a product line especially designed to meet the needs of Catholic families. The line provides life insurance, annuities, disability income and long-term care policies. Christ, Prince of Peace Council LOCAL FAMILIES SUPPORT Our Council approved financial support totaling $5,800 to two fellow Knights of Columbus parish families in August: The Andrew & Nathan Vehige Special Needs Trust Fund receive to help fund Steve and Nicole's current and long term needs of their two sons. We also approved funds to help Dave and Julie Purshke start the medical procedures necessary for their Son, Nicholas. They recently transferred to Minneapolis, MN to get Nicholas the help he needs to fight a rare brain disease, ALD. More information and updates are available at Nicholas Purske Update: Nicholas is on a good, but bumpy, road to recovery. They are hoping to leave the Ronald McDonald House at the Minnesotta Childerens Hospital at the end of the year. Here is a note of thanks from the 10/30/16 bulletin in case you missed it: We wanted to take this opportunity to express our very humble and sincere gratitude to the entire Christ, Prince of Peace parish and school community for all of your prayers and support in so many ways during Nicholas journey. Nicholas is over forty days out from his bone marrow transplant in Minnesota and is doing very well overall. There is not a day that goes by that we haven t been touched by your love and care expressed in so many tangible and intangible ways, especially through prayers. We thank you for wrapping our family in God s love and blessing us over and over. Nicholas and Julie are looking forward to seeing everyone in December and appreciate your continued prayers for this long journey. With much love and sincere gratitude, Dave, Julie, Nicholas & Gabrielle Purschke Please contact Kurtis Suellentrop with any specific questions or concerns.. Please contact your local Field Agent David Henry David.Henry@KofC.Org 5

6 A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful K of C program is more than the words you see written here or in any Supreme Council publication. It s more than a suggestion at a meeting. A program needs people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in a way that works. If you are not now actively involved in our council activities or if you want to increase your involvement, now is a great time to become an active member. If you are not interested being the director of a program or a committee, you can become a member of a committee. The four Principles upon which the Knights of Columbus were founded are: Charity: - To share our time, talents and treasures with those in need. Unity: To work together to accomplish deeds not achievable individually. Fraternity: To aid our Brother and his family Patriotism: To serve and honor our country in the Church and in the community. All of the Programs and committees are formed around these principles. The Christ Prince of Peace Knights of Columbus will have the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Icon available for a Prayer Service before the Tuesday, November 15 th General Council Meeting. The Prayer Service will begin at 7:00 PM. The following is from the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council initiative on the Consecration to the Holy Family Families today face many struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the personal struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles and partly as a result of conquering them families have great capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the peace and truth found in Christ. To help families live out this joy of Christ, Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori has composed a new prayer through which families may come together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy Family. Every Knights of Columbus council should invite families of their parish to offer this prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses on the first Sunday after Christmas. This day is traditionally celebrated as the feast of the Holy Family. It is our hope that this prayer may strengthen our families, revitalize our parishes. CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY FAMILY O Lord Jesus, you lived in the home of Mary and Joseph in Nazareth. There you grew in age, wisdom and grace as you prepared to fulfill your mission as our Redeemer. We entrust our family to you. O Blessed Mary, you are the Mother of our Savior. At Nazareth you cared for Jesus and nurtured him in the peace and joy of your home. We entrust our family to you. O Saint Joseph, you provided a secure and loving home for Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood while showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you. Holy Family, we consecrate ourselves and our family to you. May we be completely united in a love that is lasting, faithful and open to the gift of new life. Help us to grow in virtue, to forgive one another from our hearts, and to live in peace all our days. Keep us strong in faith, persevering in prayer, diligent in our work, and generous toward those in need. May our home, O Holy Family, truly become a domestic church where we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! Prayer composed by Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, Supreme Chaplain /16 6

7 Brother Steve Elster Marathoner Par Excelance The Christ Prince of Peace Knights of Columbus would like to recognize one of its Brothers for an amazing achievement. Below are excerpts from an article in the October 23 rd issue of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. You can read the entire article at country-doctor-runs-marathons---in-all/article_8f9d1f7e bf34-3d69b2607dc5.html Dr. Steven Elster, 55, wouldn t go so far as to say he d be dead by now had he not become a marathoner, but he attests his life is much healthier and better because of it. It s not so much that I would or wouldn t be alive today, he said. I think I wouldn t have been as healthy. Stroke or something; I would have been looking at diabetes, that sort of thing. Elster has hypertension in his family and lives with the condition himself. Some relatives have had a tougher time of it than he has, but he knows it s there. His running, he says, helped him avoid the problems. But it was more than simply running. It was marathoning. On Aug. 21, ran a marathon that gave him one in all 50 states, over a period of 15 years and 10 months. Elster became attracted to running in the early 1970s. He recalls the 1972 Olympics in Munich when sportscaster Jim McKay, commenting on marathoner Frank Shorter who won the gold medal, one of the few Americans to have done so, said: You run the marathon by yourself. Elster s wife, M. Divina Elster, heard his meanderings about running a marathon and gave him a push. She signed him up before his 40th birthday. Early in our marriage came school, medical residency and children, said M. Divina Elster. There was no time for sleep. Medicine and raising our family took everything we had. He was 39 years old and saturated in a high stress job and a growing family. Before his 40th birthday I signed him up for the St Louis Marathon. We as a family were happy to give him the time he needed to train. I didn t know he would end up running all of these United States. He added, We wanted to do something that would be productive toward my health. He had other motivations. It was more working in a field where you see a lot of people sickness constantly. A lot of strokes and heart attacks have passed through his hands over the years. You can see what would happen overworked, long hours Early on, training grew as a tremendous stress relief, he said. It s something I really needed to do and it enable me to be a better physician. In April 2000, he ran his first marathon. On Aug. 21, he ran a marathon in Anchorage, Alaska, completing his 50-state goal. That earned him his senior membership in the 50 State Club of Marathon Maniacs. Meanwhile, he said, his biggest challenge of the entire journey was that life kept popping up. You have to be kind of elastic, he said. He did stop training for a moment while sick. And the family illnesses remained in the back of his head. Health, stress release was the motivation; I knew it was in my family, so I was prepared. The rewards, however, outweighed any concerns. When you re training... it s a good time to clear your head and it s a very good time to concentrate on your faith and prayer life. It s helpful. We should never despair. After reaching his goal, he most likely has retired from running full marathons. His wife has run halfmarathons in some races. He plans to continue the shorter races with her. The next on their schedule is the Great GO! St. Louis Halloween Races set for Sunday starting at Soldiers Memorial. He ll do the half-marathon. He remains a strong advocate or marathon running. I think everyone should run one, he said. The inner dialogue with yourself. The marathon breaks you down and makes you think of who you are, what you are and what you want to do in the future. Everyone should run one.
