2 Historic St. Mary s Church, Lancaster, PA August 21, 2011 Dear parishioners and friends, Thanks for the car keys, Dad. I finally have the key to the front door of my first home. I ve been entrusted with the keys for all the doors in the building. Perhaps you have made one of these statements at one time or another in your life. The key itself, though not very large, carries with it responsibility, ownership, power and control. Losing one or a whole set of them would certainly be devastating. So focusing our attention on where we put the keys is crucial to their safe keeping. Keys are mentioned in both the Old and New Testament readings this Sunday. With the reception of the keys, the owner has been given authority to pass on the mission of the Church until the end of the age. Isaiah prophesies, I will place the key of the house of David on Eliakim s shoulder; when he opens, no one will shut, when he shuts, no one will open. In Matthew, Jesus is the new Davidic king who appoints Peter as the rock on whom He will build His Church. When Peter received the keys, the symbol of teaching authority, he was consecrated by Jesus as the Church s chief teacher. The keys also give him the power to render binding decisions, the authority to include or exclude members, and the power to forgive sins. Christ gave him the power of freedom from error when officially teaching on behalf of the universal Church. In other words, he was given the gift of infallibility in his official teaching on matters of faith and morals. This privilege that was given to him was central to the successful mission of the Church and was given to his successors, the Popes. Isn t it great to know that what was good and right and holy then, is still good and right and holy today? What a comfort to know God s plan for us on our road to heaven! What are some things we can do now to show that we are safeguarding the keys and following God s intention for us? Mark your calendars and plan to come to the Parish Mission from September 18-20, register your children for Religious Education or RCS, join the Women of Grace Study Group, or join the Jesus in the Eucharist Study Group, be a sponsor for someone in RCIA, or help out at the Block Party for our church neighbors. Catechism Question of the Week: True or False: Heaven, Hell and Purgatory are all separate options for our eternal home. (CCC ) With family, friends and those you meet, please discuss the following Question of the Week: Describe the times you have been a hindrance to God s plan for you. 3 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship Tithing: God s Plan for Giving Tithing weekend of August 14, 2011: $13, Student offerings: $1.00 From Fr. Leo. In today s reading, St. Paul reminds the Romans and us that all things come from God: For from Him and through Him and for Him all things are. Good stewards understand that all is gift and share generously the gifts of time, talent, and treasure with which they ve been blessed. Comment from the Pews. Thank you for bringing tithing to St. Mary s. Not only has it become a way of life for us, but seeing St. Mary s in turn tithe the tithe as a parish is so inspiring! My child s good deed for the week. Several of our children offered these as their tithe in addition to their financial gift: I helped take care of my nephew. I wrapped a present for my grandmother. I walked the dog. Notes from organizations who received money from St. Mary s Tithe the Tithe: During this tough economic climate, I am especially grateful for your recent gift to Catholic Charities USA. With generous support and involvement from donors like you, I am confident that our efforts will lead to a drastic reduction in poverty. Rev. Larry Snyder, President, Catholic Charities USA Through your generous gift of $250 you will be supporting the benevolent needs of our residents. Mary Jo Diffendall, Director of Development, St. Anne s Retirement Community To read the complete letters from individuals and organizations who have been helped by Tithe the Tithe, please see the bulletin board in the church vestibule. From the Parish Office Do Whatever He Tells You Mary points us to the Way, who is Christ You are invited to a Parish Mission to be held at St. Mary s Church from September A Parish Mission, or Renewal as it is sometimes called, is a time of special Gospel-based preaching and prayer. Fr. Bill Brown, OMV, a priest from the Oblates of the Virgin Mary in Boston will preach the mission. The theme of the mission is taken from Mary s words in John s Gospel, Do Whatever He Tells You (John 2:5). The services will be held each evening at 7:00 pm. We invite you, your family and friends and hope you will be able to attend the Parish Mission. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord Michael Lafferty Wedding Banns. Blaze Cambruzzi and Nichole Scicchitano, September 10, 2011 Francis Carbone & Anne Marie Lombardo, September 17, 2011 Question of the Week. A Moment with Mary The rosary... is the prayer that touches most the heart of the Mother of God.... and if you wish peace to reign in your homes, recite the family rosary. St. Pius X From St. Mary s Archives From The Parish Monthly of St. Mary s Church, Lancaster, August 1913: The question has been asked us: What amount of money is required to run St. Mary s Parish? We answer: Taking the annual financial report of St. Mary s Parish for 1912 as a basis, our parish expenses each month are approximately as follows: Pastor s salary $ Assistant s salary Teacher s salary Organist s salary Sexton s salary Coal, light, water, etc Monthly interest on loans.. about Miscellaneous about Total monthly expenses, about $ You can fully understand that it is not a pleasant thing for a pastor responsible for the above heavy obligations. No wonder he must talk money a great deal. The only way to avoid such unpleasant talk is for all to contribute generously. We would suggest that some of those in the dollar list increase their amount, and those in the fifty and twenty-five cent list do likewise. As to pastor s and assistant s salary an explanation is in order. From the pastor s salary, augmented by $25.00 from the assistant s salary, the domestic help are paid and all other house expenses met. When we consider the many calls for charity, the numerous personal expenses, clothing, books, travel, etc. it becomes quite clear that it is not a very easy matter to make the proverbial ends meet, especially when the perquisites of the parish are practically nothing at all. Community News Lancaster County Council of Churches Needs. Donated cars, also in good working condition, for the Wheels to Work program Parking lot bicycle rack A picnic table Call if you are able to donate any of these items.
