2 Historic St. Mary s Church, Lancaster, PA May 15, 2011 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Our Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotion begins this Sunday. Schedule time in the presence of the Easter sacrament, the Risen Christ in the Eucharist, by taking time during your busy day to pray in this holy space before the Most Blessed Sacrament. We need to be strengthened by Christ s abiding presence. Bring family and friends each evening at 7:00 pm for what you ll experience as a mini-retreat. We are so blessed to have our own native son, Fr. Pang Tcheou preach this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights. A wonderful and pastoral homilist, Fr. Tcheou will guide us closer to Christ in a spiritual journey that you won t want to miss. As a special blessing, our Bishop, Joseph McFadden, will join us on Tuesday evening. God willing, I ll see all of you there. When our children are young, we tell them not to talk to strangers. This is good advice. Clearly not everyone has your child s best interest in mind. So why would we ever follow the voice of a stranger? That is the question our Gospel poses to us today. Jesus makes it clear that He s talking about our salvation; He s the One who came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. Why would we follow any voice but His? Why would we care about what anyone else thinks? Why would we rely on anyone else s assurances? He certainly doesn t ask us to go anywhere that He has not already gone. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus leads us. Let us follow Him and Him alone! These past few weeks have been such a joy for me as I have witnessed your sons and daughters receive their First Holy Communion. With such a longing in their hearts and with such innocence, they have come to receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. As a community, let us pray for them and for ourselves that we may all receive worthily, that we will come with open hearts to receive Christ who makes all things new. My prayer for you, as parents of these children, is that you not only bring them weekly to receive Christ, but that you take time to nourish His presence in them through your conversations and prayers with them. In Communion with Christ, we are called not only to be but to live as God s holy saints. May our lives draw others to Christ who abides with us in the Eucharist that we receive. Mark your calendars now! Our parish family PICNIC is on June 5 at the Strasburg Jaycee Park. We work, pray and play together; we are family! It s always a fun and relaxing event for all. Make this a happening that you refuse to miss. Catechism Question of the Week: True or False: Parents are no longer bound to choose a saint s name or a name that expresses a Christian mystery or virtue for their child. They can now even choose a name that is foreign to Christian sentiment for their child? (See CCC 2156) With family, friends and those you meet, please discuss the following Question of the Week: How do I picture heaven? R ESEARCH ON HUMAN EMBRYOS/STEM CELLS It is immoral to produce human embryos intended for exploitation as disposable biological material. (CCC 2275) Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being. (CCC 2274) from The Catechism On Life Issues, From A to Z, Respect Life Office, Diocese of Harrisburg From St. Mary s Archives During the Revolutionary War a number of English bigots were in the habit of congregating in Old St. Mary s Church on certain days and drinking themselves beastly drunk on punch, when they would sing ribald songs and do as they pleased. Among the soldiers stationed in Lancaster were some Irishmen and Frenchmen, and a number of each determined to teach the desecraters a lesson. In consequence, on St. Patrick s night in 1778, they secreted themselves in the old cemetery, and when the drunken crowd attempted to force open the church door, which had been barred against them, fired upon them. A great ado was made over the affair, as a number had been wounded, and the morning afterwards the troops were called out at the camp grounds and the men who had done the shooting were ordered to ground arms and step to the front, which forty-nine did. They were marched before General Steuben, who was in command, and that gentleman, after satisfying himself of the truthfulness of the charge which prompted the men to do the shooting, discharged them without even a reprimand.
