1 10:45 Orders of Worship January 26, 2014 (See a separate bulletin for 6:30 & 8:30) Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross as God suffers with us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be "caught" in the net of God's grace and mercy. 2 WELCOME TO TRINITY! We are glad you are here at one of our FOUR WORSHIP SERVICES this weekend, each centered around the same scriptures but with four different musical styles. THIS BULLETIN contains information for the two 10:45 a.m. Sunday services, one a festive setting in the sanctuary and the other a praise worship in Jack s Place, our new fellowship hall. A SEPARATE BULLETIN lists the 6:30 p.m. Saturday night folk service and the 8:30 a.m. traditional service. We invite you to turn to page 8 and the insert in this bulletin for HELPFUL INFORMATION for visitors and members alike, such as restrooms, child care and service participants. WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENT sheets are available at the doors or from a host or usher and are available online at SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES for all ages are Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. See the hallway information board or a Sunday School host for class listings and locations. SUNDAY MORNING 10:45 PRAISE COMMUNION January 26, Third Sunday after Epiphany In the Worship Center in Jack s Place MESSAGE: CHOSEN AND CALLED BY GOD? ME? ARE YOU KIDDING? Intern Heidi R. Holst PRAYER CARDS are in the chair pockets. You may fill them out at the announcement time and a host will collect them if you raise them up. They will be used at the time of the prayers. If you desire private prayer for yourself or on behalf of a loved one, inform a host. You will be paired with a prayer leader following the service for prayer and the laying on of hands. COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION: Receive the bread from the first communion deacon. Then dip the bread in the first goblet and partake (Intinction) or eat the bread and then drink from the second goblet (Common cup). You are encouraged to respond Amen as the elements are received. If you desire GRAPE JUICE OR GLUTEN-FREE WAFERS, please commune by way of the center aisle and indicate your desire to the communion deacon. IF YOU ARE A FIRST-TIME GUEST TO TRINITY, please pick up a coffee mug as our welcome gift to you. We are grateful for your presence and pray that you will sense both God s presence and leading as the result of worshiping with us. FOR CHILDREN UP TO AGE 5 OR SO: At the time of the lessons and sermon, Brittany McClish will be at the back with a red pennant. Those children who would like a break from sitting still can leave with them for a time of crafts and a Bible study. They return following the sermon. Children able to sit with their parents are welcome to stay in the worship area. CHILDREN S WELCOME PACKETS are available at the Host Station for use during the service. If your child should become restless, there is seating available to the rear of the Worship Center at Jack s Place. Staffed child care is also available in the Nursery area. 2

Praise to you, O Christ. *Please be seated SERMON WHEN FISHER-FOLK FORGET TO FISH Pastor Jeff Messner COMMISSIONING FOR MISSION Those being commissioned gather with the minister before the congregation. Let us now commission these willing servants of Christ who have accepted the call of Trinity Lutheran Church to serve as missionaries in partnership with our brothers and sisters in the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus: Emily Moss, Chris Coffy, Bob Davis, Nancy Smith, Lisa Schwan, Karin Schwan, Mike White, Judy White, Negassa Danno, Kenny Oberholtzer and Nancy Oberholtzer. The minister questions those being commissioned. In the presence of this assembly will you accept this commission and commit yourselves to this new trust and responsibility, in the confidence that it comes from God? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you carry out this ministry in accordance with the holy scriptures and with the confessions of the Lutheran church and in harmony with the constitutions of the North American Lutheran Church? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you endeavor in all things to conduct yourselves as is fitting for an ambassador and servant of Jesus Christ? I will, and I ask God to help me. Will you be faithful, understanding, and loving as you accompany the people among whom you will live and work? I will, and I ask God to help me. 5

People of God, will you support these messengers of Jesus Christ, sent by God to serve all people with the gospel of hope and salvation? Will you pray for them, help and honor them for their work's sake, and in all things strive to live in peace and unity in Christ? We will, and we ask God to help us. Let us pray. Gracious God, as you have called workers to varied tasks in the world and in your church, so you have called these, your saints to this ministry. Grant them joy and a spirit of bold trust, that their work may stir up each of us to a life of fruitful service; for as your beloved Son brought health and strength to the sick and afflicted, so you have called these healers to offer aid to the suffering. Make them wise in using knowledge and skill, diligent in ministering to those in need, and compassionate in all service. In the midst of suffering and death make them a faithful witness to the hope of the resurrection; for we pray this through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Addressing the newly commissioned, the presiding minister proclaims God's blessing. Almighty God guide, bless, and keep you, that you may be faithful in the ministry to which you have been commissioned. On Sundays when we do not celebrate the Sacrament of Communion, we thank God for the gift of the Word which we have received. The prayers conclude either: For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise. or: *LORD S PRAYER - Sung, using debts and debtors...be honor and glory forever. Amen.
