Initially it all seemed manageable, but as time drew near and the grandiosity began to come into focus, I was truly challenged and nervous. But as has always been the case in my life, God never asks you to do something you cannot do. With great effort and the immense help of Michael Passineau and the team of organizers, laborers - Fr. Nicholas Napolitano, who made the Tiramisu, Fr. Pat Arensberg, who made Limoncello and so many more - everything turned out to be a great success. I am grateful to all who supported the Gala through the purchase of tickets and donations. St. Bede parish donated the food and labor of its Priests! 3 20th Sunday In Ordinary Time 3 FR. PEDURU, O.S.B. ORDAINED TO THE PRIESTHOOD. I had the honor of attending and vesting Fr. Peduru Fonseka who was ordained to the Priesthood on Saturday, August 11, 2018 by The Most Reverend Charles C. Thompson, Archbishop of Indianapolis. My history with Fr. Peduru goes back to my days as a Campus Minister at the University of South Alabama. The young college student, Anushka Fonseka, was a sincere Catholic who grew steadily in his faith and devotion while accomplishing his degree in Civil Engineering. He went on to work in Mobile as a Civil Engineer, all the while discerning his vocation. Through the Vocations Program I was then directing he came to discover his call to the Benedictine way of life and joined St. Meinrad Archabbey. He was professed a Monk and then was sent by the Monastery to Seminary formation and completed his studies this past May. I thank for the blessing of Fr. Peduru, O.S.B. and ask all of you to pray that his Priestly ministry and Monastic vocation will bear abundant fruit for the whole world. Children age 6 and under will receive the sacrament of Baptism. From 7 and above, they will receive all three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation). 4. Parents must bring a copy of their marriage certificate from the Church where they were married. 5. Godparents must be practicing Catholics. You may have a proxy for a godparent/s who may be unable to come. 6. To have your child baptized, contact Andrea at to schedule a Baptism Preparation Class. 7. RET RAIN ING Update before October 31st IT IS TIME ONCE AGAIN for all religious, employees and those volunteers who have substantial contact with children to complete their Children and Adolescents Protection Program (C.A.P.P.) retraining. This retraining is required of all personnel who have already completed their initial C.A.P.P. training and who continue to be active in the ministries of the Archdiocese of Mobile. Retraining can be completed online. Log on to The retraining articles will be found on the Office of Child Protection page. After reading the articles, take the quiz. You will receive immediate feedback as to whether or not you pass the quiz. The online database will be automatically updated with the new retraining expiration date. If you are new to the parish and would like to volunteer either at the parish or the school, you will need to take the initial training. It is offered the fourth Wednesday of most months which will be September 26, October 24, November 28 at the MCPS High School campus at 6:30pm. HAVE YOU REMEMBERED YOUR PARISH IN YOUR WILL? Dear Parishioners: When I came to St. Bede as Pastor, one of the things I was asked to do by the Archdiocese was to make a new will. It was then that I began to think more seriously about material possessions and death. Leaving the Church in your final will and testament is a Holy act. What greater testament could be made to the world, family and God than to say, I support my parish Church even in the end. Please consider leaving St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in your Final Will and Testament. St. Bede offers a weekly Bible Study with Tom Riello. We meet in the Parish Hall on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. to begin on Tuesday, August 21. We also have a once a month food and fellowship at the study. This year we will be reading and studying the Gospel of St. Luke. This Gospel offers many insights to our Catholic Faith: like why do we believe in the Immaculate Conception of Mary, where does the prayer Hail, Mary come from, why do we believe that the Eucharist is really Jesus Christ and many more other important teachings of the Catholic Church. Come join us for an exciting and adventurous study of this great book of the Bible. The class is free and open to everyone and no registration is required. Study notes are provided.
