Prayer Line: Jo Kusz Beacon of Hope and Faith From the Pastor When we are tossed by the storms of trials and tribulations in life, how many times do we stand totally confused and feeling so helpless without knowing how to deal with them? Hit by natural calamities or tragedies, we remain flabbergasted and downtrodden. Every time, when our faith is challenged or questioned, when we are scandalized by other members or leaders of our community, it is another storm hitting the boat on which we are traveling. In the first reading, God addresses Job for the first time, questioning his right to challenge God's authority and leading Job deeper and deeper into the mystery of creation. We hear how the Lord speaks to Job whose life was devastated by storms of illness, the deaths of his dear ones, and the total loss of his possessions. Out of the storm, God reminds Job that He is in control. Paul, who rode the storm of rejection by his former friends, also experienced storms of violent hostility from the Jews who refused to believe that Jesus was the promised Messiah. So he explains in the second reading that Jesus died for us to make us a new creation. In order to receive this gift, we have to respond to His love by living for Him in all situations of our lives. In the Gospel, Mark assures the first-century believers that nothing can harm the Church as long as the risen Lord is with them. He describes how, by a single commanding word, Jesus stilled a storm on the Sea of Galilee, returned the sea to its natural order, and saved His followers from drowning. The incident reminds us to keep Jesus in our life s boat and to seek His help in the storms of life. Jesus asked the apostles, Why are you so terrified? Why are you so lacking in faith? Jesus asks us those same questions today, as we pass through the days of challenges and difficulties as a parish community and as members of this Archdiocese. It is easy for anyone to see we should have trusted more after danger has passed, but our Lord wants us to hear this question also when the storm is raging and the waves are high. He wants us to know He is still in control, even though we may wonder, how can He be? We all experience different types of violent storms in our lives: physical, emotional, and spiritual storms. We face storms of sorrow, doubt, anxiety, worry, temptation, and passion. Only Jesus can still these storms. Jesus can give us real peace in the storms of sorrow, doubt, tension, and uncertainty, provided we humbly submit to Jesus guidance. Let us be people of hope and faith, because our trust is in the Lord who is truly risen and lives among us, accompanying us in our journey towards the heavenly Jerusalem. World Youth Day 2016 The young adults and youth of Presentation of Mary are attending World Youth Day, which is being held in Krakow, Poland, from July 19-August 2, Join Pope Francis and a multitude of Young Catholics around the world, along with Fr. Benny, Bishop Cozzens, and Justin Stroh - Archdiocese Pilgrim Director. You must be 16 years of age or older at the time of departure in order to go. There are brochures with all the information on the trip available in the Kennard Street entrance of church, and on the website at Deadline to register is July 10 th. Pastoral Care PASTORAL VISITS: Because of the Right to Privacy laws, Presentation Church is not notified of parishioners who are in the hospital, homebound, or have entered a health care facility. We must hear from you, a family member, or a friend if you wish to be visited by our pastor or pastoral minister. Call our Parish Office, and our receptionist will pass on the information. Thursday Adoration Join us for adoration on Thursdays from 8:30 am 8:30 pm. Vespers and Benediction begin at 8:00 pm. Adoration is held in the St. Francis Chapel located in the Parish Center. (All are welcome to come anytime.) Stewardship St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ died so that those who live might live no longer for themselves. Initially they were scared, but when they discovered that inchworms don't bite, literally every kid searched for their own. St. Paul Street Evangelization Two-Day Workshop Friday, September 18, 7:00-10:00 pm and Saturday, September 19, 8:00 am-4:00 pm Location: St. John the Baptist, New Brighton St. Paul Street Evangelization is a non-profit Catholic organization dedicated to preaching the Gospel to all nations, and one of the ways they do this is by bringing the Catholic faith to the streets. They provide a hands-on experience of being a street evangelist, but the training goes beyond street evangelization; it also provides effective tools to share the Gospel with the people in your parish, school, or workplace. The Office of Evangelization & Catechesis will be cooperating with the Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute to bring this exciting two-day workshop! Registration is $75, which includes materials, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and a snack. A person does not need to be a theologian or professional apologist to be an effective evangelist. A person only needs to have a heart for Jesus Christ and His Church and be willing to share that with others.
