From the From Director the Director of Administration of Stewardship & Finance On the Road to Emmaus - A Daily Journey of Distractions The Gospel story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus is a familiar one. As I read it this week, I found myself strongly identifying with the two disciples. How many times have I gone on my everyday journey and not noticed the many signs of Christ s presence that were right before my eyes. Some days, I get so distracted in the events of the day that I lose sight caught up in the events rather than what s really important. There was much activity in the days following the crucifixion of Christ and many things to talk about and ponder. In many ways, these may have been distractions for the disciples. They may have been caught up in the conversation rather than conversion, just as I too find myself distracted in my busyness too busy to notice the presence of Christ walking right by my side! Just as He did with the disciples, Jesus is speaking to me in the busyness of my day, conversing with me, about all the events going on. Yet, like the disciples, I don t notice that it is Him! And then, in the breaking of the bread, in Eucharist, we quiet ourselves and find the joy and peace of His risen presence. We bring to Mass (and hopefully all our day!) hearts burning within Lk 13:32. When we see and feel His presence we can exclaim with the Psalmist, You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence, the delight at your right hand forever. 3 Faith Formation The month of May is traditionally dedicated to our Blessed Mother Mary. As children years ago, we made May altars with the statue of Mary surrounded by silk fabric and flowers. Hopefully this month will find each of us deepening our devotion to her. This calls for prayer, gentle gestures of kindness, and walking our journeys of faith with compassionate hearts as Mary did. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us. - S. Kathy Social Concerns Justice: On his first visit beyond the Vatican, Pope Francis went to the prison to wash the feet of young inmates. His first visit outside of Rome was to Lampedusa to welcome immigrants and decry the globalization of indifference. Every day Francis challenges melancholy Christians, careerism in the church, and greed in the economy. His commitment to the least calls us all to be a poor church of the poor. Charity: This coming Saturday, May 10 th, is the day we are asked to donate food items which the mail carriers will pick up and deliver to local food shelves. Our parish will be the recipient of some of the food donations, due to the efforts of a little girl in our Faith Formation Program. She informed one of the authorities (her aunt) of our commitment to those in need. Thus we will receive some of the donated food items from the mail carriers. May Jesus bless her efforts as well as those of the mail carriers, donors, and those who will help sort the food items received. Angels of mercy such as these seem to surround us as we try to feed those who hunger. H.E.O. May God bless you! Catechetical Institute Presentation Parish is holding an information session on the Catechetical Institute Friday, May 9 th from 7-8 pm in the Parish Center. Applications for the Archbishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute are now being taken. The deadline for applying is June 1, The Archbishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute describes itself as "an ongoing formation resource for Catholic adults of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith and further their spiritual formation. The curriculum at the Archbishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute is based on the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and is covered in four 11-week modules over a two-year period. With the main textbook being the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the pedagogy of the program centers around guiding the students toward the goal of the Beatific Vision; therefore, the content of the classes is best described as a systematic and organic presentation of the Catholic faith. The structure of the Catechism reveals a road map, a journey toward an end, that being life in the Trinity. For more information please contact Fr. For more information, please call Colleen at Stewardship The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked with Jesus all day long, but it was not until they offered Him hospitality and He blessed and broke the bread that they recognized Him. Simple acts of loving kindness still reveal the presence of God in our midst. Loaves & Fishes Team 1 will be preparing and serving supper at the Dorothy Day Center on Wednesday, May 7, meals were served in April. Calling All Toilers Tuesday Toilers will meet this Tuesday, May 6th, at 8:30 am in Kenney Hall. All are welcome! Lunch will be served. 4 Presentation School News Seven Presentation students attended Student Day at the state capitol on Tuesday, an event sponsored by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. The group learned about the legal history of abortion, abortion methods, its effects on women and families, and the legislative process. They also met with Senator Chuck Wiger (DFL) and asked him to support the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The school (PreK-8) is still accepting registrations for the school year. Please contact the school office to pick up registration forms or to schedule a school tour with Principal Rogers or Preschool Director Erin Hinds. Elementary school students are now accepting donations of new and used eyeglasses for its Unite for Sight program which is helping to provide the gift of sight to those living in rural areas of Guatemala. Eyeglasses can be dropped off in the labeled box at the Kennard Street entrance of the Church, in the Parish office, or the School office. Please stop by the Spring Festival on Saturday, May 3 rd to congratulate Mrs. Barb Mauer on her retirement and her 30 year career here at Presentation School. Mrs. Mauer will be available for a meet-and-greet from 3-5 PM in the Gym on May 3 rd. Preschool News As our school year is fast approaching it's end, our gym classes have been a variety of FUN! The children have frequently practiced their jumping jacks. Most of them can do the coordination it takes to jump, legs apart/arms up and jump, legs together and down. They are so proud of accomplishing this challenge!!!! From the beginning to now jumping jacks actually really look like jumping jacks. - Ms. Michelle W. Deacon Blake s Practice Mass Dear Parishioners, I am inviting you to attend my practice Mass at Presentation church at 7 pm on Thursday, May 8. Because I am not yet a priest, it is not actually a Mass but hopefully it will look like a regular Mass - otherwise I better do a little more practicing! This practice Mass is one of my final assignments before I get ordained to the priesthood. It should last around an hour, and there will be some allotted time for feedback from the people in attendance. Some parts of the practice Mass will be shortened. Other directions will be given prior to the beginning of the practice Mass. Even if you cannot attend, thank you for your continued prayerful support of my vocation.
