Prayer Line: Jo Kusz From the Youth Director What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? I had finally gotten my kids to bed. It had been such a long day, full of bickering and poking and laundry and spills. It had been a day full of disappointments and set-backs. It had been such a long, long day. And there they were, in their beds. I kissed them. I made the cross on their foreheads. I stroked their cheeks and reminded them that they are cherished and loved and beautiful, and I left each of their rooms ready to throw my fists up in the air in a pose of motherly victory: I did it! I made it! And then, there it was. My oldest called for me, Mama! I went back to her room. I addressed her need. I left her room. My youngest called for me, Mama! I went to her room. I addressed her need. I left her room. Again, I heard the cry, Mama! Wash, rinse, repeat. With today s Gospel reading, I can t help but acknowledge to myself how often I cry out to the Father, Papa! Father! I need you! How lucky and blessed we are to have a Father who does not long for rest at night, and who does not have any selfish wants, and who loves us so unabashedly. I think it s easy to think of this Father as some ethereal being that is out of our grasp; to see Him as an abstract entity, intangible to our being and impossible for our imaginings. Yet in today s reading, we are intentionally reminded through the portrait of parenthood just how involved the Father is. He is not far away; He has his hand on your shoulder. He is not intangible; His fingertips cause your heart to beat. He is not impossible for our imaginings; He is the wonder that allows us to imagine. He is not out of our grasp; He is nestled in your heart. Rather than being some far-off entity, He is so close that it can be hard to focus our eyes on Him. And so, cry out to Him. He has so many gifts to give you. He has so much truth to reveal in your heart. He has so much compassion to forgive your sins. He has so much love to heal your wounds with. I went back to my girls rooms several times that night. It had been a long, hard day for them, too. I calmed their fears. I kissed their cheeks. I checked for monsters. I got them water. I assured them where they needed assurance. As all parents do, I addressed their needs and not necessarily their wants. As all parents have had to do, I firmly but lovingly said goodnight, and closed their doors for the evening. And as they went to sleep, they might have wanted more things. They weren t entirely happy with me. But they went to bed knowing that I was still there, still loving them, even though the door was closed and the lights were off and they couldn t see me. So it is with our Father. He is always there, even when a door is closed, even when it is dark, even when we can t see Him. Take comfort, and allow yourself to feel the warmth and love of a Father who cares for you endlessly. - Jessica Nelson H.E.O. Update Thank you for your donations to area food shelves. 19 pounds went to Salvation Army, Maplewood, on July 18. July 25 Anne Carlson, Merrick Community Services, Maplewood. Thank you for your generosity! May God bless you!
3 FFF: Family-centered Faith Formation Let us keep in step with the Saints! This Monday the Church celebrates the feast of St. James...one of the 12 Apostles, brother to St. John, with Jesus as a guest at the Cana wedding, patron Saint of Spain, and the first apostle to be martyred. This Tuesday the Church celebrates the feast of St. Anne wife of St. Joachim, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and grandmother of Jesus. She and St. Joachim are the patron Saints of grandparents. All you Saints of God, pray for us. The Two Feet of Social Concerns - S. Kathy Justice: Pope Francis is continually turning our hearts to our planet and to the poor. Treasure and heed his words of wisdom: We must never forget that the planet belongs to all mankind and is meant for all mankind; the mere fact that some people are born in places with fewer resources or less development does not justify the fact that they are living with less dignity. ( ) Charity: God s blessings and thanks for all the donations received this past week. Urgently needed: Food and gas gift cards, quarters for laundry, and diapers (Sizes 3 and 5). Corruption s tyrannical GREED shatters the plans of the weak and tramples on the poorest of the poor. Pope Francis ( ) Become a Knight of Columbus Are you a Catholic man committed to God, His church, your family, your country, your community, and your parish? If so, then you could be a Knight of Columbus. Please contact Bob Altman at rcaltman@netzero.net or Year of Divine Mercy In this Jubilee Year of Mercy which continues through the feast of Christ the King, Presentation Parish offers a daily Prayer of the Divine Mercy Chaplet in the Divine Mercy Chapel in the Parish Center.
