Prayer Line: Jo Kusz From the Director of Stewardship Where Does My Treasure Lie? How I love summer. Recently I threw open the drapes to see the early morning light streaming, like grace-filled rays dancing across the tops of the trees in the dense wooded back yard below my balcony and I was reminded of how God gives us each day to begin anew. Yet, more often than not, the simplicity of an early summer morning can get complicated quickly by the demands on our lives or a sudden turn: the results of a medical exam; an injured loved one; the death of a family member, or beloved friend; a financial crises; a layoff at work; the breakup of a marriage. These and many other crises can make life very difficult to bear; but they can be devastating if our lives are not rooted in God, who is our rock in hard times and our strength to see us through. The gospel today speaks to this. About a man whose life is about to take a sudden turn; he will die that night. Then, Jesus speaks of the riches of heaven, as compared to earthly riches. The gospel points at how we can get caught up in what we own and what we have or what we don t have. It s speaks of possessions and how they take us over. Money can give out on us. But it can also be the means by which we express where our treasure lies. Besides using it to cover life s basic needs, how else do we use our resources? Do we use our money to care for the least? Our calendar can tell us how we use another treasure our time and will also show where our treasure lies. As the end approaches, those dying sometimes express regret with how they used their time. They will recall how they worried and were fretful over unimportant concerns and lost sight of what really mattered. In his writings, St Ignatius mentions three obstacles to our faith wealth, honor, pride. He saw from his own experience that people wanted wealth so that they would be highly thought of it can be the right school, the right address, the right bank, the right set of friends. And pride in what we have. And we know things can change for the worse very quickly. The opposite of the obstacles St Ignatius mentioned simplicity, integrity, humility. Humility is pride in who we are children of God, of being gentle and humble in heart as Christ was humble. (Matthew 11:29). There are no greater riches than having a loving; generous; faith filled heart regardless of your financial status. Money can never buy the gifts that bring happiness. It is such a simple lesson, but one we will never learn if we refuse to open our heart to it. This summer is a great time to reduce, repair, repurpose, or recycle the things of our lives. Of throwing open our drapes and seeing God s magnificent creation in a new light. Of winning the battle between being rich in the sight of the world and being rich in the sight of God. Let us focus then on generosity - on returning God s gifts with increase, through the generous sharing of our time, talent and treasure with each other and within our parish community. - Kay Mottaz H.E.O. Update Thank you for your donations to area food shelves. Food items went to Merrick Comm. Serv., Mplwd., on July 25. August 1 Julius & Darlene Loipersbeck, Salvation Army, Mplwd. Thank you for your generosity! May God bless you!

3 FFF: Family-centered Faith Formation Family Faith Formation: this coming Thursday the church celebrates the feast of St. John Vianney. He is the patron saint of all priests. Thus we ask his blessings on Father Benny and all priests who serve as pastors of parishes. Registration forms for this coming year of Family Faith Formation sessions will be sent out soon. Please keep in mind that our Faith Formation Program is for both parents and children. Faith formation is a life time process and is not just reserved for children. (Jesus taught the adults and blessed the children!) It is with hope that the families who participate are intent on becoming true disciples of Jesus. - S. Kathy The Two Feet of Social Concerns Justice: Archbishop Pierre, recently appointed papal nuncio to the U.S, reminds us that there are many injustices, many poor, many people who are treated unjustly. The Church should be near to the poor. This is where Christ wants us to be. That sounds like Pope Francis of whom Archbishop Pierre is a fan of! Charity: Out-of-town guests and others made very generous and useful donations this past week which delighted the recipients who are so grateful. Urgent needs: 2 box fans, backpacks with school supplies in them, and food and gas gift cards. Is it hard to imagine a mother being so poor that she can t do her piles of laundry because she doesn t have quarters to put in the apartment s washers and dryers? Yes, making it a habit of saving quarters for that purpose is a work of MERCY!
