1 Volume 22 Issue 4 Monthly Publication LAKESIDE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LAKESIDE LANTERN SHARING THE GRACE OF GOD IN OUR 58TH YEAR APRIL Greetings from your Pastor We have celebrated the resurrected Christ on Easter morning and now as the Disciples did so long ago we must now move from our Upper Room sanctuary out into the world. As John recounts that first encounter with the risen Lord in John 20:19, he says, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, Peace be with you After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you. Then he breathed on them and said, Remember the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone s sins, they are forgiven; if you don t forgive them, they aren t forgiven. (CEB) As I have prepared for the journey of Lent for Lakeside and the reflection on where God is leading us as a church, I have been struck by the overwhelming needs of not only our community but the needs of many of our own. It does not necessarily mean monetary or financial distress but that certainly comes into play. What I am referring to is the loneliness and despair some of our members experience. I do my best to stay in touch with everyone who has a specific need. What I am calling on those of you who have a few minutes each week to reach out with a phone call or even a visit to someone who is feeling all alone during their day. I realize many do not have the capability to hit the mission field in a physically demanding way but all of you can be a joyful voice on the other end of the phone. As Jesus sent out the disciples to bring the Good News of Christ to the world I am calling on you to bring the Light of Christ to some of our brothers and sisters who need to hear a confirming voice. Let s be in service together on the mission to which God has called us. In His service Pastor David

Native American Ministries Sunday affords the opportunity of Native and non-native United Methodists across the denomination to become aware of the lives, gifts and ministries of Native people. Conferences are encouraged to develop ministries for and with the Native people who live within them. It also allows Native people the opportunity to fully participate in the life of the conference. They cannot do that unless we, the Church, know who they are. Proceeds from Native American Ministries Sunday offerings support Native ministries within conferences, provide educational assistance for Native Americans in the form of scholarships, and assist with the establishment of urban Native ministries. Sunday, April 10th will be our Sunday to remember them. Please prayerfully consider giving to this worthy cause.

9 Volume 22 Issue 4 Page 9 What does it mean to be: Lay Leader This month we are going to take a look at the position of Lay Leader at Lakeside UMC. It is a more visible and vocal position as the primary purpose of the Lay Leader is to be the voice of the congregation. This voice means representing the congregation at district meetings and Annual Conference. The Lay Leader also meets with the pastor on a regular basis to discuss church life and represents the congregation (also know as Laity) in these meetings. In other words, the Lay Leader is your voice at Lakeside and district events. The United Methodist Church website ( describes the position responsibilities as: This leader represents the lay people in the congregation and is a role model of Christian discipleship for the congregation. This leader examines ways the congregation as a whole and as individuals can be involved in caring ministries in the community. He or she work with the pastor and other leaders to launch or strengthen ministries that build discipleship and increase God s presence of caring, justice and love in the world. The Lay Leader makes plans with leaders in the congregation for celebrating the ministry of laypeople throughout the year, and especially on Laity Sunday. The Lay Leader learns about the actions taken at annual conference and by the General Conference and shares this information with members of the congregation. The Lay Leader meets regularly with the pastor to discuss the state of the church and the opportunities for ministry. There is an opportunity for YOU (Yes, YOU not that person over there but YOU!!). If you think that you would be good at this position, please see someone on the Leadership Council or Pastor David. This position is open and needs to be filled immediately. The church functions because members of the congregation volunteer for positions on the Council. If you have never served on a committee, it is not as bad as you think, I promise!! It requires only a few hours of your time each month and you will be continuing the works of the church here at Lakeside UMC. Please prayerfully consider your opportunity to serve as Lay Leader. Also, please remember to pray for this position as well as all positions on your Leadership Council. May you have the strength of eagles wings, The faith and courage to fly to new heights, And the wisdom of the universe to carry you there. -Native American Blessing
