Message from Pastor Janet It is wonderful to be back in Montana after a week of study in Denver at the Iliff School of Theology. I am looking forward to seeing you all in worship on Sunday. On Tuesday, after I returned, the Whole Church Initiative Team met and discussed a powerful reading on "The Reconciling Community", which reviewed the Christian practice of forgiving; why and how we should forgive those who have hurt us deeply in our lives. Author James Bryan Smith reminds us of the teaching of the parable of Jesus from Matthew 18:23 34 (NRSV). The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant 23 "For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents[a] was brought to him; 25 and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. 26 So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27 And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii;[b] and seizing him by the throat, he said, 'Pay what you owe.' 29 Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30 But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31 When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?' 34 And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt.

4 What do you think of this parable? Who did you relate to most as you read it? What do you think is the point of the parable? As you answer these questions, keep in mind the questions this story was design to answer: how much and how often should we forgive one another? (Smith, p. 114). Smith reminds us that should meditate on how many times God, through Christ, has forgiven us when we have hurt someone else, which should make it much easier for us to forgive those who have hurt us. In other words, Smith says, the key to forgiveness is an awareness of your own forgiveness. He follows with advice that is also an important practice. Smith says "I have found it helpful to pray for the person I am trying to forgive." This practice helps us to look at this person(s) as God sees them. This doesn't mean they have to be your best friend, and you should set healthy boundaries to protect yourself from people with hurtful behaviors. It does however allow you to let go of the pain that holding grudges inflicts on your own mind and spirit, so that we can pray openly to God to "... forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us". Please contact Teresa if you plan to attend the celebration. Come help Dwight Preston celebrate his 90th Birthday on Sun, Oct 25th following our Worship Service. "Light the Night" Costume 5k Run/1m Walk, Fri, October 30th Registration at 5:30 pm, Run/Walk at 6:30 pm. Fun for Everyone. Your Life Matters project in memory of All Suicide victims. "ALL SAINTS DAY" is the "Memorial Day" of the Christian Calendar when we honor loved ones who have died during the past year.

5 We will be celebrating All Saints Day on Sunday, November 1 st. If you have family members or friends who have died during the past year whom you would like to honor, please fill out the attached form, drop it by the church office, or the information to Lisa at: pumc@polsonumc.org prior to Tue, October 27 th. All Saints Day Memorial Request Form UMW is looking for donations of costume jewelry and Christmas ornaments to be sold at the Holiday Bazaar on Fri, November 6th. So look through your jewelry box and send some treasures to UMW. Bring craft items and Bake Goodies to church on Thu, Nov. 5th, 9 am 1 pm, or Fri, Nov. 6th at 9 am. The Country Store needs volunteers! Please contact Peggy Milner if you can volunteer to work at The Country Store. The Country Store is a wonderful mission of this church and needs your support! Say cheese! Pull out that cell phone or camera and take some pictures of our wonderful congregation in action at church or volunteering in the community! We would like to use them on the Facebook Page, website and bulletin boards here at the church. to pastor@polsonumc.org, drop a print at the office, or post them on Facebook. The Church Calendar is filling up quickly for the fall. If you are planning an event or need to use the church, please coordinate through the church office to ensure space is available and reserved! Living the Questions Faith Study Fall Session meets on Mondays from 1 3 pm. Contact Nancy Teggeman for information. Bible Study Fellowship meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm. Contact Lynn Sherick for information. Church Directories are available in the church office. A $5.00 donation is requested to cover the cost. See Connie Sidebottom. Share the Spirit Personal Care Bag Project Personal Care Bag Project originated in early 1990s as a small project in the First United Methodist Church of Polson. In 1994 the project expanded to include other Polson churches when Welfare Reform hit Lake County and the need grew beyond what one church could manage. Also agencies working with low and no income individuals and families could more effectively reach folks in need. Today eight churches in Polson work with the project and supply personal care items to nine human service agencies or organizations serving Lake County residents. Agency budgets do not allow for purchase of personal items to have available in their offices as they work with folks who find it difficult to buy essentials. Essentials include shampoo and soap to send a clean child to school, laundry soap for clean school or work clothes, deodorant and shaving cream for a good appearance at a job interview, and diapers for a mother who does not have the money for laundry soap or to buy diapers for her infant. Diapers most requested item... List of items... In 2005 the project's church representatives decided to buy items in bulk from local stores. Thus most churches send a check for $130 to Share the Spirit for each collection, or $260 per year.

7 Each church is asked to sew at least 10 keepsake type bags a year. Congregation members can support this project: pick up small travel items from motel/hotel rooms continue to donate any size personal care items through out the yearsoaps, shampoo/conditioner, unisex deodorant, lotion, disposable razors, new brushes/combs, nail clippers, toothpaste and toothbrushes. with monetary donations to: Share the Spirit, PCB in memo, PO Box 1341, Polson MT Share the Spirit is our umbrella organization and allows us to have a legal non profit status. Share the Spirit programs include the Holiday Assistance Program, School Supplies Program and Personal Care Bag Project. Hello friends! Living the Questions Faith Study The schedule for the fall session of Living the Questions is set as follows: we meet Mondays from 1:00 3:00 at the Methodist Church in the adult classroom. The dates are: October 5, 19, and 26 November 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 December 7 and 14 So mark your calendars! If you can't make a meeting don't fret; I will provide you with the written material and offer a time to view the video. This new session is titled, "Saving Jesus Redux," and is on loan from Donna.
