1 Page 1 NEWS FROM THE PEWS May 17th, 2018 NEWS AND INSPIRATION FROM ST. ANDREW S UNITED CHURCH, GEORGETOWN, ON Sunday May 20 Pentecost Communion Reader: Bev Whatmough Greeters: Ralph Challice and Ginny Morecroft Ushers: Anne Cillis and Gail Bancroft AV Operators: Bryan Scott and James Stringer Counters: Ross Yahiro Announcements: Membership Next week, Sunday May 27 Reader: Greg Howard Greeters: Greg Howard and Margo Baird Ushers: Bert and Carolyn Burns AV Operators: Ryan Wilson and Bryan Scott Counters: Ross Yahiro and Pat Moore Announcements: Membership Service this week at St. Andrew's May 20th, 2018 This coming Sunday, Christians across the world will celebrate Pentecost. In fact, not all Christians recognize this holiday (holy day). But it is generally honoured in liturgical churches (Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, United, Presbyterian, etc.), in Pentecostal and Charismatic churches, and in many other Protestant churches as well. Theme: Pentecost Pentecost is not as well-known or as popular as Christmas and Easter but it is significant to the church. In many ways, Pentecost is the birthday of the church. it s the beginning point of ministry after the resurrection of Jesus. Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called the church. Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective. It is through the spirit that the church is born. Thus, Pentecost is the church s birthday. The English word Pentecost is a transliteration of the Greek word pentekostos, which means fifty. It comes from the ancient Christian expression pentekoste hemera, which means fiftieth day. So Pentecost happens fifty days after Easter. In the service we will celebrate the coming of the Spirit with some colourful symbols waved around and through the Sacrament of Holy Communion. We hope you will join us this week! Scripture Reading: Acts 2:1-21 Sermon: The Call of the Spirit!

I think that people in the community are starting to see what is going on at our church. Now that spring is here we can get on with the clean up from the construction of the sign. It is messy at the front of the church and does not look very good. We want it to look attractive to go with the sign. I am looking for some people to do several tasks. This would be just a one time thing, not a continual job. The first task would be to put back together a small section of the interlock sidewalk. This should be relatively easy to do. The second task would be to rake up the dirt and stones from the grass. Fill in the holes of the trenching and around the foundation of the new sign. There is a third thing to do and that is the removal of the foundation of the old sign. Several of us has tossed around several ideas. Either to completely remove or just chop it down below grade. Both have merits but we are not sure yet. We would like to keep it as low cost as possible. Any suggestions are welcome. If you can help with any one of these tasks, please talk to Phil McClure. Thanks! OUR DAILY BREAD BOOKLETS - FOR APRIL/MAY/JUNE 2018 ARE STILL AVAILABLE Our Daily Bread Booklets for April/May/June 2018 are still available. Please find them on the table by the photocopier. We have created a brand new and awesome website, where you can find out more about our Garden and the Older Adults Garden Program. Website: Bookings can now be made through the website. The Garden is a fun-filled interactive sensory garden for children, as well as for people of all ages and abilities, which allows them to regain contact with nature through the use of the human senses. The Garden is therapeutic, inclusive and diverse, accommodating those with special needs. Research has shown that the physical environment, such as a sensory garden where one interacts with nature through sensory experiences, plays an important role in promoting an individual's health and well-being. In our Older Adult Garden Herbs Program, participants explore the sensory gardens including the woodland and waterfall gardens and the edible garden, engage in a lively discussion about the life of Lucy Maud Montgomery while enjoying some light refreshments under our beautiful gazebo, and pot up a herb plant to take home. In the edible garden, we explore a selection of herbs, talking about how herbs can be used, grown and harvested. As well there is the option to add to the program a horticultural therapy activity of your choice, e.g. scented sachets, fresh herbal tea, dried tea bouquets, herbal foot balms, herbal sock baths, herb sock stuffed Santa/ snowman, or edible terrariums. An activity can be custom designed for you. The Older Adult Garden Herbs Program runs from June to September in the Garden. You can us at info@gardenofthesenses.com

The opening worship service is being held on Sunday, July 22, starting at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. We are inviting visitors from across Canada to join us for worship, with a special invitation to the churches in and nearby Oshawa, Ontario. Please consider relocating your worship service that morning and join General Council commissioners, visitors, and international and ecumenical guests in Oshawa. This unique collaboration will be reflected throughout the week and will be beautifully embodied in our opening celebrations. If you are unable to attend the opening worship in person, consider following along online with the livestream from GC43 on the United Church YouTube channel. Let s celebrate God s presence together! You are also invited to another new feature for GC43 called the Festival of Faith. All day Saturday, July 21, and Sunday, July 22, there will be events, concerts, displays, workshops, artisans, and fun as we celebrate the wonderful faith and diversity of our church. We hope you will be able to join us in person or online for some or all of this exciting week. And we trust that you will be holding all of the commissioners in prayer throughout the week as we seek to discern and respond to God s call to the church at this time. May God continue to bless you and your faith community as you carry out the mission and ministry of Christ where you are among your neighbours. Peace and grace to you, Jordan Cantwell Moderator/Modératrice The United Church of Canada/L Église Unie du Canada

16 from the Pews Page 16 Page 16 Grant s World Last weekend we said good bye to a faithful Church member. Etheleen Martin passed away on March 24th and her service was last Saturday. It was a wonderful tribute to a life well lived. The church was packed, and we celebrated through readings, music, prayers and stories by her family. After the service many gathered at the Senior s centre for refreshments. Saturday was a special celebration for me. It was the fourth parent in a family that I have officiated over my time at St. Andrew s. First Joe and Maria Horvath, then Charlie Martin and finally Etheleen. Etheleen s son, Grant Mitchell and Heidi Horvath are married to each other. Through this union I have gotten to know the Horvaths and the Martins at St. Andrew s. On Monday, I gathered with the family for the interment of Etheleen s ashes in the Dixon s corner cemetery, Caledon. Now Etheleen and her first husband George are reunited again in death. Just a few meters away Charlie and his first wife Maria are reunited again also. The circle of life has been completed, and may God continue to watch over them in death. As a minister it is an honour to be invited and included in the family circle in such times of sickness and grief. It has been nice to get to know these folks over the years and I will miss them greatly. I feel incredibly blessed by God to walk the journey of life with the Horvath and the Martin/ Mitchell families. On Friday, we will be holding our monthly free Community Table Supper. If you are looking for something to do, feeling like you want to be entertained or simply share a meal with others then come and join us Friday at 6 pm. There will be live entertainment. Also, downstairs the clothing room will be open if you are in need of any clothing. Volunteers are always needed so if you can help come and join us that day. On Saturday night, there will be a special One Worship service happening at Knox Presbyterian church. many of the churches in Georgetown will be joining up to worship together. The service will be held at 6:30 PM. This will be a fun and active service. We hope you will consider attending. Blessings, Grant
