1 NEWS FROM THE PEWS News and inspiration from St. Andrew s United Church, Georgetown, ON FEBRUARY 13, 2014 WORSHIP THIS WEEKEND February 16, 2014, 10:00 am The Story, Chapter 18: Daniel in Exile In Worship this Sunday we will look at the familiar stories of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace and also Daniel in the Lion s Den. As we continue our journey through the Story we find ourselves in the book of Daniel. Daniel and his three friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego remain faithful to God and place their trust in God to keep them safe. At the start of Chapter 18 we see King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, trying to force his subjects to worship him and other idols. He builds a gold statue of himself that is 90 feet tall. The three boys refuse the statue and the king threatens to put them in a furnace 7 times hotter than usual. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego continue to be loyal to God, and not the king, and they get thrown into a fiery furnace. Amazingly enough after this happens the three men are not harmed one bit because God protected them. They placed their faith and trust in God and they were saved. The good news is that King Nebuchadnezzar saw their faithfulness to God and their lives were spared. A few chapters later we have a similar story of faithfulness in the person of Daniel. Daniel is one of the exiles from Judah in the land of Babylon. With a strong and trusting faith in God, Daniel s life was spared and the Lord kept the lions mouths shut so Daniel walked away safely from the pit. In both of these stories we see how faith and trust in God can bring good news to those in a tough situation. It is the same for us today. When we place our trust in God we may be blessed in incredible ways that are life giving. Also in the service this week we will be receiving two new members into the congregation. Ove and Jacqueline Andersen will make a reaffirmation of faith. The Andersen s have been members previously but had become inactive and now wish to publically reaffirm their faith commitment to our church. Jackie has been attending regularly with her mother Joyce Gaudreau and Ove has been active in the Communications Ministry. We welcome them to membership once again. THANK YOU Another successful senior men's luncheon was held at St. Andrew s today. Thanks to all the support from our volunteers who prepared food, set up, served and cleaned up. The Outreach Leadership Team is hosting an Open Session with Pot Luck Supper to discuss ways that St. Andrew s United Church can be more outreaching into our community. This is a visioning session to dream of ways we can live out our Christian calling through serving others. Please come with your ideas to share as we vision with the Outreach Team. Your Membership Team: Colleen Armstrong, Alison Annabelle, Barb Lewis, Laura King, Robin Thompson, Cindy Wood CIRCLE OF FRIENDS There is a group of ladies that meet at the church on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. Our next meeting is Friday, February 14, from 9:30-11:30am. TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY Please note that there will be no Bible Study meeting on Tuesday, February 18th. The group will resume on Tuesday, February 25th. DAILY BREAD BOOKLETS The Daily Bread booklets are available for March/April/May. Please find them on the table by the photocopier. A donation of $1 would be appreciated. WEEKLY YOUTH GROUP The Youth Group will now be gathering every Friday from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm here at the church. We might play games, sing, run around, pilot spaceships, eat, watch things, or juggle groundhogs! Who knows? It'll be a different adventure every week, and you should come out and laugh with us! CONGREGATIONAL MEETING MARCH 9 At the Annual General Meeting held on February 2, 2014, a motion was proposed to change the quorum for Board (of Directors) meetings from seven members to six.

As a result, a Congregational meeting will be scheduled for Sunday, March 9, immediately after the worship service to present, discuss and vote upon the motion to update Section 3.

3 CONGREGATIONAL MEETING MARCH 9 At the Annual General Meeting held on February 2, 2014, a motion was proposed to change the quorum for Board (of Directors) meetings from seven members to six. This motion had to be deferred to comply with the rules for amendments to the Church Constitution. As a result, a Congregational meeting will be scheduled for Sunday, March 9, immediately after the worship service to present, discuss and vote upon the motion to update Section 3.1g of our Church Constitution with the following: Quorum for Board Meetings shall be a minimum of half of the voting members plus one (6 members). For this motion to pass, a two-thirds majority of voters present is required. WEEKLY GUITAR GROUP A new Guitar Group meets every Friday morning from 9:30 am - 10:30 am here at the church. We are beginner guitarists who are in the early stages of playing. Anyone who would be interested in joining us is welcome. We are currently taking beginner lessons at the Georgetown Senior Centre on Thursdays from 12:45 to 1:45. If you want to join us and don't have a guitar see Grant Williams; he has guitars available. KAIROS WORKSHOP Saturday, March 22, from 9:30 am until noon, Kairos will be presenting a workshop called "Indigenous Rights 101" in the church hall. 4 FLORENCE S FORUM Happy Valentine s Day everyone. To those of us who are older, remember Valentine s Day at school? The valentine signed Guess Who and we wondered if it really came from that boy we so adored at the time. The Valentine box that became such an important part of the classroom for about a week before the big day! Maybe we even had a little party! We all got a whole book of Valentines and it didn t matter that almost everyone in the class got the same ones. Life was so simple! Where did we go wrong? Next Monday, February 17, is Family Day; a holiday for all, a mid winter break and Lord knows after this winter so far we need it. Are you making any plans for a family event? Maybe skiing, tobogganing, walk through the woods, or maybe just a day to sleep in and hang out at home. Just nice to have the pressure off for a day. Grant has a couple of guitars to loan you if you would like to join the St. Andrew s guitar group (got to give them a name). They jam on Friday mornings in the church at 9:30 a.m, It is a group open to anyone. Yes ladies, that includes you. Do you have coffee too? I might come for that. Well the good Lord willin, I ll see you next Sunday. Remember; Love keeps the world going round and round so share the love. Florence COMMUNITY ZUMBA CLASSES Ditch the workout and join the party! Try Zumba classes for fun and fitness here at St. Andrew's. Classes begin on Tuesday, January 14, and run until March 25, in the downstairs hall from 7:00-8:00 pm. CASHH Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills (affectionately known as CAShh) is looking for volunteers for our GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE campaign beginning in April. 5 SCOUTING FUNDRAISERS The 4th Georgetown Venturer Scouts are embarking on a grand challenge this coming summer, Adventure 14, a high adventure jamboree to be held in Newfoundland the first week in August. The youth have been working hard to raise funds to help cover some of the costs of the event and to purchase needed equipment as well. Scout Popcorn! The Venturers also have Scout Popcorn available for anyone who has already run out or missed the annual fall sale. Last Sunday, for our annual Valentine s service we had the men singing at church. The sanctuary was alive with sound and movement as people swayed and clapped their hands. Mike was playing drums and Rob playing guitar and Sue on the piano. At the end of the service the choir sang a Bob Marley tune called, One Love. Bill Elgie sang the solos well but he sure is no Bob Marley! Sorry Bill. I think the best quote I read this week was by one of our youth after the service. He said. You know your church is awesome when the choir sings One Love-Bob Marley with guitar and drums. It is nice to see our young people engaged in the worship service. Thanks to all the men who came to sing and those who accompanied them. I have recently found out that we now have a guitar playing group on Friday mornings. There are about 6-7 people strumming away in the sanctuary. Sounds like a lot of fun! As a matter of coincidence I just happened to be in a conversation with Bruce Clendening. He was going through some things in his home that were his wife Elizabeth s. He found three guitars and offered them to St. Andrew s. What a great honour to receive the guitars that she loved to play and now they may be a blessing to others as we grow our music ministry. If you would like to join the guitar group on Fridays please see Gord Robinson and if you would like to borrow a guitar come and see me. Today we hosted our semiannual Georgetown Senior Men s lunch. In the gym we had about 85 men join us for a hot chili lunch. This lunch is the first one that we have hosted since the passing of Wayne Barrett who organized the lunches for years. At the start of the lunch we paused for a moment of silence to honour Wayne. We owe a huge thanks to Greg Howard and Brian Heinmiller for agreeing to coordinate today s meal. I heard the chili was delicious! We are blessed with so many volunteers who stepped up to help today. Blessings, See you on Sunday, Grant
