Believe Series, Chapter 16: Biblical Community It s Pentecost this week! The birthday of the Christian Church. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2. Pentecost is a wonderful time to ponder what the church community is like when God is present and blessing us as the followers of Jesus. Pentecost is a time of wonder and creativity with God s spirit. This Week in the Believe Series we are into Chapter 16: Biblical Community. It just so happens that the key scripture story is the reading for Pentecost Sunday. Being in a biblical community means to follow God s word in what we do as a community of faith. It is following faithfully what Jesus wants us to do. When we are in tune with the Word of God we will more easily grow in Christlikeness. A Biblical community follows the model that Luke writes about in Acts 2: They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. This is way that Christian churches were formed so people may live according to Christ s plan for us. People are created to be in a loving community which shares and cares for one another. This Sunday we will be celebrating the sacrament of Holy Communion and also the Praise team will be playing this week. Scripture Readings this week: Acts 2:1-4, 42-47, Acts 4:32-37, Romans 15: 5-7 Reflection: The Local Church is the Hope for the World!

9 News from the Pews Page 9 Grant s World This week s theme is about gratitude!. This week we have so much to be thankful for around our community. Last weekend we held our annual spring Garage sale, Bake Sale, BBQ and Car wash. It was a smashing success! We owe a huge thanks to all those dozens of volunteers who made it all happen. In total, we were able to raise more than $1,200 for the mission of the church and youth group. On Sunday afternoon I headed down to Toronto to feed and clothe the homeless. We had so much clothing loaded in new bins purchased for our mission. The youth class made sandwiches to hand out to the guests. It started off as an ok day but shortly after our arrival it started to rain heavily. Very unfortunate timing for sure, but through the generosity of people in the Georgetown community, we had a box full of donated umbrellas! How cool is that? On the day it rains we were able to provide brand new umbrellas and dozens of brand new T shirts that were donated to keep people dry while they ate food. I do not know who donated them at all, but I have in my heart gratitude that they arrived at just the right moment and were a blessing to our homeless guests! Sunday was also Mother s Day and it was a day to be thankful for our mother s and those who had a mothering influence in our lives. I hope that Mother s day was a blessing to you this week. As I was pondering about gratitude, I came upon this picture posted online that resonated with me. So often we strive to find happiness in our lives but we will get there when we start with gratitude for the wonderful things that God has first blessed us with. Gratitude will bring us happiness! I give thanks this week for all the people in my life that have given me hope and encouragement along the way. Giving thanks for those who have had a positive influence on us is a way that will lead towards happiness. When the opportunity comes your way remember to say thanks to those who make a difference in our lives. Blessings to you! See you on Sunday! Grant

Food4Kids provides a weekend supply of healthy foods for children living in poverty to ensure they have access to nutritious meals at home. Packages of healthy and nutritious food are prepared by volunteers every week and delivered to local schools each Friday to ensure children have the necessary nourishment required over the weekend. Each food package contains kid-friendly, healthy, non-perishable foods in addition to fresh fruits and/or vegetables. The food is delivered to the schools on a weekly basis where packages are discreetly placed inside the child s backpack to ensure non-stigmatizing execution of the program.
