8 2 Page 8 PREPARING FOR THE FEDERAL ELECTION - OCTOBER 19, 2015 As Christians, we understand that in building up our society, we are helping to prepare the way of God s Kingdom. In Jeremiah 29:7, we are told to seek the welfare of the communities where God has placed us, while in Luke 10:28, Jesus commands us to love our neighbours as ourselves. Christians across Canada continue to live out these commands through advocacy on many issues including poverty, affordable housing, the environment, refugees. An election campaign is a wonderful opportunity both to raise public awareness of the needs and burdens endured by so many, and to influence policy decisions. Here are some suggestions regarding how we can make informed choices when we cast our ballots on October 19 th. LEARN more about the issues. ENGAGE in dialogue. Discuss the issues with your candidates on the doorstep, the phone, by letter, on social media. ATTEND All-Candidates meetings in your riding. PRAY for candidates, and for voters, that we may all be guided not by self-interest, but by genuine caring for all God s people. Their son came to Sunday School but seemed upset. His teacher asked him if anything was wrong. The boy replied no, that he was going to go fishing but his dad told him that he needed to go to church instead. The teacher was very impressed with the boy's parents and asked the boy if his father had explained to him why it was more important to go to church than to go fishing. The boy replied, "Yes he did. My dad said that he didn't have enough bait for both of us." Have a Nice Day!
