1 The Trumpet Mountainside United Methodist Church Making God s Power Real for the East Mountains October 2013 Newsletter Issue No. 114 Needless to say we (John & Julia Beach and I) made it into and safely Out of Africa during our mission trip to Zambezi, Zambia. We flew into Kitwe, Zambia and then drove all day to Zambezi which is the location of the Lord s Mountain Orphanage. It was quite and adventurous drive with an extensive experience on the roads of Zambia. We had a great visit with Bernard and Betty Lumene The US Team with Bernard and Betty Lumene who and the founders and managers of the orphanage. Bernard and Betty moved to Zambezi over 12 years ago and walking the streets of Zambezi they found children who were homeless and orphaned because their parents died of AIDS. They began offering Bible studies and food from the porch of their rented home until they received resources to purchase several acres of land and began building a home, dorms and kitchen/dining room on the south edge of town. The Lord s Mountain Orphanage cares for 35 children. Bernard and his wife Betty also have five children of their own ages two through eighteen. This is a special ministry that shines the love of Jesus in the town of Zambezi. These children are greatly loved by Bernard, Betty and the staff and they reflect that love back through their singing songs about Jesus and the sharing of Christ s love to us. Bernard, Betty and all the children so greatly appreciated our presence and the gifts we brought. They mentioned how they felt so loved and encouraged, especially knowing what a long distance we traveled to Out of Africa arrive in this remote location. They were greatly appreciative of our $7000 cash gift, which most of it will go towards the purchase of a truck that can help transport food and supplies to the orphanage. Up until this point all materials have had to be delivered by an oxcart and with the farm being 4 kilometers away that is a challenge. The children were also especially appreciative that we made dresses/shorts to personally fit them and that we handed them out by calling their names. Most of what they receive is generic and in bulk, so something personalized was a nice surprise. Needless to say there are numerous stories to share. If you missed the evening presentation last Sunday, we plan to make a recording available at a later date. Finally, I want to say a special thanks to everyone who either made donations to the LMO through the auction or are supporting Mountainside UMC through your regular giving. All these donations make it possible for our church to reach out across the world to spread the Good News of the Gospel of Christ. It was a great trip and were blessed with new relationships and new opportunities that are coming Out of Africa. In God s Grace, John
2 October 2013 In September, Pastor Rech, Julia Beach and I joined a team of 4 from Texas to visit the United Methodist New Life Center near Kitwe, Zambia, and the Lord s Mountain Orphanage in Zambezi, Zambia. At the New Life Center ( we found a thriving mission dedicated to spreading the love of Christ through on-site printing, education, tutoring, meetings, lodging, church, athletics and PET production. The PET is a Personal Energy Transportation device that is pedaled with the hands to aid those with minimal use of their Pastor Rech on a PET legs. Each month, 50 PETs are produced and given away to improve lives and in the words of Pastor Delbert Groves, Let them know that Jesus loves them. The New Life Center is the only location outside the US that is producing PETs. There are over 20 production facilities in the US as well. ( petinternational.org). The second day, after travelling for 10 hours on a twolane road, we arrived at the Lord s Mountain Orphanage, operated by Pastor Bernard Lumene and his wife, Betty. Along with their family of 5 children, they are also raising another 35 happy children who have God in their lives every day of the week. The children were delightful. We learned that they like to sing church tunes, enjoy learning and New Life PET Shop crafts, and have page 2 Mountainside Methodist Visits Zambia a great appreciation for Sign in Lord s Mountain Dining Hall gifts, even textbooks! During our 3 days there, we were able to take the older children to visit the 700-foot Chinyingi suspension bridge across the Zambezi River. We also brought craft materials, which they used to demonstrate some incredible artistry. The new soccer balls were a hit, and their barefoot soccer skills Boy s Dorm Beds were extraordinary. Their interest in learning was demonstrated by asking for help with long division. To our surprise, some had been introduced to the basics of Calculus in the local schools. The 2-hour church service was very exciting, with singing and music by choirs from 4 congregations, all very animated and rhythmic. Because of our Africa Auction and other fundraising, we delivered $7,000 to support and strengthen their ministry. Pastor Rech, Julia and I thank you for your prayers during our trip; the New Dresses! reality of 6-10 hour trips on the Zambian roads warranted every prayer you sent. We found a well-run orphanage that is raising very good children, despite having very limited resources. They are very efficient with what they have, and I hope we find ourselves supporting them in many ways in the future. John Beach Artistry Demonstrated

There is also a signup sheet for those who want to walk but would like to join a team or just find someone to walk with. If you know of any walks we can add, please contact Susan Hyde at susan.hyde24@comcast.net or conniepatters@q.com. Thank you! Trustee News The walkway beside the playground is now complete. Work will begin soon on a fence around the playground to keep the children safe. Thanks to all who came out for the work day and helped finish the concrete and cut down a lot of the wild vegetation. The air conditioners in Wagner Hall have been disconnected from the exhaust fans and so they re a little quieter. They still put out a lot of air though so if an air conditioner is on, a couple of doors must be open. Otherwise the pressure could damage the building. A new air conditioner has been installed in the round room. The unit will both heat and cool and will make that room much more comfortable. The temperature for the water heater in the kitchen has been increased but it takes a few minutes for hot water to reach the sinks. If you don t get hot water to the sinks in two or three minutes, please let Bob Mason know so he can pass that on to the experts. We re trying to determine if the heater is working correctly. page 3
