The Trumpet Newsletter of Mountainside United Methodist Church Making God s Power Real for the East Mountains. Issue 112 August 2013 The Mission Trip to Africa It is only a month until our missionaries from Mountainside UMC(John and Julia Beach and I) will be meeting with a team from the Northwest Texas Conference to head to Africa. I wanted to take this article to share some details about this trip and what we hope to accomplish. We will be leaving for this two week trip on Monday September 2 and flying from Albuquerque to Dallas, then to Amsterdam, Netherlands, then to Johannesburg, South Africa and then finally fly into Ndola, Zambia. We will leave Albuquerque on Monday morning and arrive in Ndola around noon on Tuesday. After we fly into Ndola, we will then take a 10 hour bus ride to Zambezi. Zambezi is the location of the Lord s Mountain Orphanage, which is a ministry of the Zambia Provisional Conference of the United Methodist Church. This ministry was originally established ten years ago to provide home, food, clothing, love and education for AIDS orphaned children. The ministry began as a feeding ministry but eventually developed into a orphanage that has a kitchen and dining room, girls dorm, boys dorm, directors house and a volunteers lodge. The Lord s Mountain Orphanage has 6 staff members and cares for 35 orphaned children ranging from 4-18 years of age. The budget to operate this ministry is roughly $36K U.S. dollars. They struggle to maintain a consistent income as well as other challenges. have several goals. One is for us as the family of Mountainside UMC to make a difference in our world for Christ and His kingdom and to do so as personally and face to face as reasonably possible. Yes, we could just send money. But this lacks the opportunity for us to be changed by the people and the work of Christ in Africa and for the staff and children of this ministry in Africa to see first hand that they matter to a body of believers half way across the world. I also hope that we can sustain a long-term relationship to continue to support, pray, communicate, and discern needs that we believe the God might want us to meet through our congregation. I believe it will be a mutual blessing that can also help us walk in God s calling on our church to be blessed to be a blessing. Please take note of our announcement(page 2) on the Auction for Africa fundraiser on August 18. We will also be having a special gathering on September 22 to report on this exciting mission trip. Needless to say John and Julia Beach and I would greatly appreciate your prayers along with the rest of the team taking this journey. Obviously prayers for our health and safety but especially that we make the most of this great opportunity to develop relationships that can hopefully develop into a meaningful ministry partnership. In God s Grace, John Some have asked about our reasons for making this trip to Africa and to a local ministry in Africa. We

Vacation Bible School Kingdom Rock VBS was so fantastic! We had nearly forty kids plus sixteen volunteers! It was such a huge success! The decorations were out of this world and the kids loved it. It was such a wonderful week that I can hardly wait for next year! I want to send out a heartfelt thank you to ALL the volunteers. You guys did a wonderful job and there is no way I could have done it without any of you. I would like to recognize all of you for your hard work. Margaret Thompson Mary Brink Beth Clifford Susan Hyde Rebecca Brink Jami Coffman Sue Walters Dan Hyde Alexandra Scheer Kaeli Manzanares Christie Hazan Tomi Tayler Laura Krout Winnie Pearsall Jamie Anderson Johann Cahill Loreta Crawford Karen Watson Julia Beach Thank you all for making it such a memorable VBS for Mountainside!

The Youth Pool Party was so tremendous! We had so many youth and kids there plus all of the super cool adults that came to support us! We couldn't have done it without Bob and Janet VanAllen! Thank you for letting us your pool and you lovely house! I look forward to such outstanding youth events in the future! Thank you everyone for your support and time! The McCurdy Mission Trip was a huge success. Five youth and three adults spent a week at McCudy Charter School serving McCurdy Missions. They worked incredibly hard cleaning and maintaining the campus, but managed to find some time for fun too. The group would like to thank all of the Mountainside members who made this trip possible through their generous support of the youth s fundraisers. Thank you everyone for giving us the chance to be the hands and feet of Christ. BACK TO SCHOOL PARTY is coming up quick! Mountainside is hosting our Back to School Party Saturday August, 17th from 3-6 PM. This is going to be an awesome event where kids can come and play games to win FREE school supplies! If you want to donate school supplies please bring them to the Church by August 11th. There will be a box in the Narthax clearly marked to leave the supplies. If you are interested in volunteering please call Callie Black at (505)

Trustee Trumpet News for May and June, 2013 Your Board of Trustees has been working to keep things up and running, safe and sound. Here are a few of the things going on: Jim Turner has ripped out some concrete near the playground area, adding drainage pipes to redirect the drainage from the roof to stop the freezing and clogging up. It now drains to a safer area. He also built a very nice new ramp to the storage shed making it easier to access. Our playground area is looking great and being used. The board will be adding a camera and motion sensor lights to that area as well as to the far north side of the round room and the parsonage for better security. Joyce is very happy with the motion sensor on the front doors and the placement of our security cameras. Our office staff is feeling much safer! A light was added in the stairwell making it much safer. The electrical outlets in the new restrooms were moved to the sink area where they will be more accessible. Yellow caution signs to watch your footing are being added to some of the areas in the MAC and Bill Chambers continues to work on our security cameras; smile and be safe! Mountainside Choir The MUMC adult choir will resume rehearsals on Wed August 14, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the round room. If anyone has questions, please contact Barbara Manzanares (cell or jb_manzie@q.com). Our first Sunday to sing will be August 18, 2013 for the first service. New members are welcome! Disciple Bible Study A new Disciple Bible Study is starting August 14. The series is Remember Who You Are and involves reading the letters of the prophets. This is a 17 week class and the cost is $35. This is a great way to read the Bible with light daily readings and study the Scriptures in the weekly gathering of a fellowship of others in the Mountainside UMC family. We will meet on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Please sign up in the foyer or call or the church office. -Sign Up Now! East Mountain Food Pantry Food Drive Sunday August 4 we will be handing out bags to be returned for the Food Drive date of August 11. East Mountain Food Pantry: During the month of June the food pantry made up and gave out 162 food boxes for 333 adults and 214 children. News: We now have approval to repack foods (other than meats) in the health department certified kitchen at Mountainside on Tuesday mornings 10 am to noon. Sermon Series-Re-MARK-able! This Sunday August 4 we will be starting a new series called Re-MARKable! Basically we will be walking through various passages in the Gospel of Mark seeking to hear from Jesus as he speaks to us today in the same way he spoke to his audience many years ago. Here is one thing that is different about this series, I really need you to BRING YOUR OWN BIBLE. I will not be projecting verses on the screen. Regardless of the translation that you use, I am strongly encouraging each person bring their own copy(or Kindle or ipad) of their Bible. I am really looking forward to this B.Y.O.B. series as we seek to follow Jesus through hearing his leadings through the great words of this book of Mark.

Out to the Ball Game: Sunday night July 28th, a record 39 Mountainsiders cheered on the Isotopes against the New Orleans Zephyrs. The Isotopes lost but we still had a great time.
