1 The Trumpet Mountainside United Methodist Church Making God s Power Real for the East Mountains December 2011 Newsletter Issue No. 92 A Great Christmas Blessing from a Great Trial Many of you like myself have been blessed by the music of Handel s Messiah especially as we hear it often during the Christmas season. Recently I read some information about Handel that I thought you might find inspiring. In August 1741, George Frideric Handel was at the end of his rope. He was fifty-six years old, in poor health, and near bankruptcy. The composer who had once been the top star in his field now found his name and fame all but forgotten. He was a has-been. His music was no longer being played by the top orchestras in Europe. The fame that once brought the royal family to his home now could not purchase bread for his cupboard. Constantly racked by pain and partially paralyzed by another stroke, the grand master of music was praying that he would die before he suffered a fate he considered worse than death; being cared off to a debtor s jail. Then came a knock on the door. It was an invitation to perform in Ireland. An old friend, the Duke of Devonshire wanted the composer to come to Dublin and produce a series of benefit concerts to Christmas Eve Service Carols, Candlelight and Communion Service 7 p.m. Saturday December 24 Mountainside UMC Sanctuary A New Sunday School Class This class is co-led by Lindy Rech and Fran and Karol Nimick and meets from 10:15 to 10:55 a.m. on Sunday mornings in the Pastor s Office. The material discussed in this class will coincide with the Advent Sermon Series called The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem. If you are not currently involved in a Sunday School Class, please consider joining this class. raise funds for those in debtor s prison and a local hospital. This invitation was followed by a letter from a wealthy friend, Charles Jensen, who gave Handel a libretto based on the life of Christ, taken entirely from the Bible. The invitation and the letter and the leading of the Holy Spirit led Handel away to call forth once more his creative gifts. He locked himself away for over three weeks to create the rough draft of the Messiah. Polishing the piece many times over the next few months, Handel grew so pleased with it that he took the oratorio with him to Dublin. Messiah premiered on April 13, 1742 as a charitable benefit, raising 400 pounds and freeing 142 men from debtor s prison. A year later, Handel would perform his masterpiece in London and the rest as they say is history. That is a great story that simply reminds us that in our moments of greatest desperation, God might just be preparing to work the greatest of inspirations. 2 December 2011 Boxtops for Education In October over 400 boxtops and labels for education were given to McCurdy School. Operation Christmas Child Thank you for your gifts to Operation Christmas Child. I greatly appreciate your support as we work worldwide to provide physical and spiritual aid to suffering people in the Name of Jesus Christ. Your generosity will enable us to continue sharing the love of Christ and the hope of the Gospel. We collected 44 boxes from our Church and 42 from the community for a total of 86 boxes. Thank you again, and may God bless you. Mary Brink Budget Budget Needs YTD: $252, Received for General Budget: $241, Amount Needed: $ 10, Total Budget for 2011: $289, East Mountain Food Pantry In October we distributed 154 food boxes for 295 adults and 169 children. Postcards to those Serving Our Country Mary Chambers has offered to send postcards to those who are Serving Our Country. If you have put someone on our Joys & Concerns list for serving our country and would like them to receive ongoing postcards, please contact the church office by , office@mountainsidemethodist.org or call the office with a current address. We have a Newly Organized Shelved Shed! (Say that three times quickly) Round of applause for Jim Clifford, Doug Peek and Dan Patterson! Some saws, hammers, wood, sweat and hard work yielded us a shed in which we can now find things. Take a look Yes, it all fit with some shelves left over to use. Let s keep it in order and enjoy finding what we need. No fingers or toes were lost during the project just a smashed thumb! Thank you everyone for another great year of serving and sharing to our outreach at Project Share. We served a smaller than usual crowd on Sunday November 20th. There was plenty of leftovers for people to take with them. A special thanks goes out to the following: All those who donated the Enchilada casseroles and delicious desserts!!! Kathleen Nimick for baking all the special breads & 7 pumpkin pies for the homeless to take with them. The Praise Band and the Jug Band for providing entertainment; Nicole Martinez, David West, Carla Miszkiel, Bob Van Allen, Lowell & Pat Wagner, page 2 Project Share Lewis & Winnie Pearsall, Judy Robinson, Karen Watson, Jo Ann Cahill, Laura Crew, The prep and serving crew; Julie Hall, Anne Merkley, Frankie Pokluda, Kathy Foster, Chuck Champlin The kitchen crew; Mark Miszkiel We are always commented on our great dinners that we put on at Project Share, and many of the people shared their gratitude with a " Thank you and God bless you." It is really a blessing to share in this ministry. Thank you Mountainside members for your support. Looking forward to next year. Patty Jones
3 Community and Family Life Center Progress There is much happening on a day to day basis on the Project. Some is good news and some is stressful. Plans With the exception of a few relatively minor changes, the plans as prepared by Joe Simons are complete. The hold-up is with the Steel Engineers. This is one of the stressful problems. The Steel Drawings were scheduled to be completed about 5 weeks ago. As of this date, they are not as yet completed. Joe, our Architect, is calling them almost daily but is not getting much satisfaction. The bottom line is that the plans will be submitted to the County as soon as the Steel Drawings are received. Tijeras Water The Agreement with Tijeras has been signed. We anticipate authorizing the start of construction by November 21. With any luck, the Water Line Extension should be under construction by the time you read this report. Stove The Trustees have agreed to replace our current stove immediately. The new stove will be the stove that is specified for the new kitchen. This way we will have a safe stove for now and the new stove will be moved into the new kitchen at the proper time. Fund Drive Congratulations to all of you! You have reached the $500,000 minimum pledge amount needed to start the Project. The Admin Council will be deciding as to when to request the funds in the deflated Matching Fund Account. The Council should have made that decision by the time you are reading this report. Because of the reduced value of the Matching Funds, as of this date, we are about $23,000 short in reaching the minimum goal. As of November 20, 2011 December 2011 Trading Account The Trading Account has been set up with Merrill Lynch. If you want to donate stocks or bonds to the Project, please contact me for instructions on how to do it. Loan The Loan Documents are being negotiated by Connie Patterson, our Attorney and me with the Methodist Foundation, our Lender. We are hopeful to have the final Documents agreed to, signed and filed of record in the next few days. Title Insurance Thanks to Connie Patterson and her work, a problem Title Exception has been cured. The Title Insurance should now be acceptable to the Lender. Budget The Contractor now has the final plans and will be providing us with the final hard numbers very soon. The final Budget can then be set, as well as knowing for sure what Alternates can be included in the Basic Project. Schedule While we still are at the mercy of the Steel Engineers, the County, etc., my best estimate as of this time is for a construction start around the middle of December. The Project Will Happen It is only that we must solve these late hour problems for the Project to be a total success. Prayers Please keep the Project, County negotiations, the Matching Fund Account balances, and the future uses of the new addition in your prayers. Prayers are as important now as they have been at any other time during the Project! Lowell Wagner, Chair, Building Committee page 3
