1 The Trumpet Mountainside United Methodist Church Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of our Community and the World. Newsletter Issue No. 144 Needless to say, this past week has been a sad one as my Mom, Lindy and I were with my Dad during his final days before he passed away this last Thursday March 24. We were thankful that his illness was brief, but it still caught us a little by surprise. I was also a little surprised how that shortly after Dad passed away, my mind was flooded with countless memories with him in the past. It made me wonder if that is the soul s attempt to try and reconnect with the separation that takes place at a death of a loved one. Not that I haven t been through this before, but it s been a while. It was obviously a great blessing for my Mom, Lindy and I to be able to have our daughter Candice, son Michael, daughter-in-law Liz and granddaughter Juniper present during this loss. However, what made it a great blessing together in worship was the gathering of the body of Christ in honor of the God who gives us life and being able to give thanks for the gift of life through individuals and in this case, my Dad. I want to say thanks so much for everyone who came and blessed us with your presence and many who helped out in various ways. I especially want to say thanks to Rev. Jim Turner Thanks So Much! for bringing an amazing message and being a part of Dad s life for several years. Thanks also to Dee Short, Beverly Spears and Nick Edwardson for their work in leading us in worship with the hymns. Thanks also to Tomi Taylor and team (too many to list) who provided a wonderful lunch after the service and finally to Jim and Jane Anne Lunn for setting up greeters and ushers. Thanks also to everyone who let your thoughtfulness be known through your prayers, cards, s, calls and your presence. After the service was over, we gathered around the table at the house and participated in a long time tradition that we had spent countless hours with Dad when he was alive. We played cards. We had a great time. We taught Mom a new game that came from Liz s family. Mom caught on quick and we shared a lot of laughs which is one of my favorite things about playing cards along with winning (of course!). Again what a great blessing it is to share these seasons of life with a church family. What a blessing you are to us! Mountainside United Methodist Church Risks & Vulnerability Questionnaire Proverbs 27:12 A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions. The simple go on blindly and suffer the consequences. Purpose Statement: Consistent with our Mission, Mountainside United Methodist Church (MUMC) is developing a plan for emergency prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. The plan supports the congregation and the East Mountain community through development, implementation, and maintenance of emergency services. The plan enables leadership, coordination, and continuity to allow MUMC to be a resource, providing emergency ministry and other services to our community. The Emergency Operation Planning (EOP) group needs your input to make sure we are addressing areas of concern we as a church see as most significant or likely to occur. There are no right or wrong answers here, your insights, life experiences, and knowledge represent a unique perspective. Please look at these questions from YOUR perspective. When all of the replies get summarized it will hopefully reflect our collective best thoughts on where to concentrate our limited resources. The questionnaire will ask you to differentiate shades of gray, some of the questions will ask you to rank items high to low using a scale of 1 to 5. Again, no wrong answers simply your best insight. Your EOP group is asking you to please take a few minutes to help us properly evaluate the risks (i.e. threats & hazards) and prioritize these risks. This step is critical so we are working toward a set of goals that represents us as congregation as a whole. The intent of our emergency planning efforts is to be a resource for our congregation and the East Mountain community in a time of need. As such, please use this geographical area as the context for your answers. Please use the following link to participate in the survey. No personal information is requested when completing the questionnaire and none is collected. page 3

4 Mountainside UMC Prayer Encounter With Dr. Terry Teykl March Prayer Encounter with Kids! The Prayer Encounter For Kids was so wonderful. We had seventeen kids attend who were taught how to pray, when to pray, and why to prayby our lovely seven volunteers. How to use pray and movement together to understanding and participating in their own communionare just some examples of their learning experience. Carefully crafted art activities along with fun and uniquegames reminded the kids of the power of prayer. That weekend they learned that God's Grace has no age limits and prayer is for every day not just on Sunday. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers that helped make this a very special and educational experience for our youth and children. page 4

5 Ignite! All Youth, 5th grade and up, are encouraged to attend this growing youth group! Ignite will now be held twice a month: Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Bring a friend and join us for great food, fun games, youth-led devotionals, and incredible fellowship that brings a chance to ignite your passion for Christ and grow your relationship with God. Contact Tifani for more information or to sign up to HOST the next Ignite, either with food or your own devotional. Yes, adults are welcome to do a short devotional for the youth too!! Contact Tifani today at (505) or tvincent@mountainsidemethodist.org. Youth Potluck! Josh and Jackie Moore will be graciously hosting our Youth, and others that are interested, at 12pm on April 30th, for fun and games and outdoor paintball! Sign up in the Narthax and indicate how many people will be joining you. We will be grilling great food but all contributions are welcome for this amazing potluck. You may bring your own paintball gear but there will be enough gear for everyone! Who will be the team left standing for God? Tell your friends and mark it on your calendars. Contact Tifani at tvincent@mountainsidemethodist.org for more information. New Monthly Youth Event The last Monday of every month, we invite everyone to join us for Christian Music Night at Roller Skate City, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., in Albuquerque. March 28 is the day to join us this month for some great youth fellowship or volunteer to participate as chaperone and race us on the skate rink! Skating not required! Fun to be expected! See you there! Contact Tifani at (505) for more information. MUMC Chili Cook off! What a smashing success! We had eleven chili participants and over fifty MUMC members come sample and vote for the best MUMC Chili! All participants get a glowing recommendation from me and everyone I talked to, as there was no such thing as bad chili that day! The winner of the Chili Cook off was Scott's Green Chicken Chili, second place going to Cari's Study Break Chili, and third place being a tie with Bob's Green Chili Chicken and Paul & Janet's Explorer Post 20 Chili. Thank you to everyone that participated andeveryone that came to fill their bellies. It was a great event! page 5

6 Would You Adopt a Prayer Box - Box 3:16? In an earlier newsletter, Pastor Rech shared a story about Dr. Teykl at one of the churches where he was doing a prayer conference. They had shown him some prayer boxes that they had placed in the church, and he heard that still small voice say, It is in the wrong place. Later they had all gone out to dinner at the local steak house. Dr. Teykl noticed that as they were blessing their meal a biker family at the next table watching them intently. That is when he realized that the voice was trying to tell him the prayer box needed to be in that restaurant, not in the church. This was the impetus for a new ministry called Box 3:16. Box 3:16 provides a way for us to move beyond the walls of our building into our hurting and discouraged community. As a member of the recently formed prayer team, I have agreed to coordinate this ministry. Box 3:16 is a way to apply prayer to a lost and hurting world in an effective and organized way. Here is how it can begin with you. I invite you to make a list of the businesses that you have contact with on a regular basis. Here are a few common examples: the place where you work, the grocery store, the hair dresser, the restaurant, the vets office. Who do you know there? Make a list and include them in your prayers for the next month. At the end of April we will be organizing the Box 3:16 ministry where each of you will be given the opportunity to purchase a box and all the materials you need to place that prayer box at one of the businesses you have been praying for (You will become a sponsor to this business). The box will have a pad of prayer request forms attached to it. Your commitment will be to check that box at least once a week for prayer requests for the next 3 months. You will take those slips from the box and pray over them. But for now we ask you to simply begin by praying for the businesses where you are a customer or employee. The next time you enter the establishment, ask God to help you become aware of the people, especially the ones who seem to need encouragement. If you don t know them by name, begin by showing warmth and concern for them, and what is going on in their lives. This will help you know how to pray for them, and shows your interest in them as a person. At this point you will not be doing anything but getting to know them. The Lord will begin to reveal to you where you can be His light. Please consider expanding your prayer time to include these businesses and the people who are a part of them. Linda Mizell, Box 3:16 Coordinator, Funeral Reception Reorganization If you would like to be notified when we are in need of finger food for receptions, please check the list in the Narthex. Also, our four adult Sunday School classes have graciously agreed to provide coordinators for funeral receptions. For those who do not attend Sunday School classes, there is a signup sheet to be a coordinator, so we have some extras. Please contact Tomi Taylor ( /amtttaylor@q.com) for more information/questions/ideas. East Mountain Food Pantry During February we made up and gave out 160 food boxes for 362 adults and 165 children. Twelve were new families. Financial Report As of 03/28/2016 Budget Needs 03/28/2016 $111, Received for General Budget: $123, Difference: +$ 12, Total Budget for 2016: $446, page 6
