1 The Trumpet Mountainside United Methodist Church Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of our Community and the World. Newsletter Issue No. 141 A man s daughter had asked the local pastor to come and pray with her father. When the pastor arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows and an empty chair beside his bed. The pastor assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit. I guess you were expecting me, he said. No, who are you? I m the new associate at your local church, the pastor replied. When I saw the empty chair, I figured you knew I was going to show up. Oh yeah, the chair, said the bedridden man. Would you mind closing the door? Puzzled, the pastor shut the door. I ve never told anyone this, not even my daughter, said the man. But all of my life I have never known how to pray. At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it always went right over my head.. I abandoned any attempt at prayer, the old man continued, until one day about four years ago my best friend said to me, Joe, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here s what I suggest. Sit down on a chair, place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It s not spooky because he promised, I ll be with you always. Then just speak to him and listen in the same way you re doing with me right now. So, I tried it and I ve liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I m careful, though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she d either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm. The pastor was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old guy An Empty Chair to continue on the journey. Then he prayed with him, and returned to the church. Two nights later the daughter called to tell the pastor that her daddy had died that afternoon. Did he seem to die in peace? he asked. Yes, when I left the house around two o clock, he called me over to his bedside, told me one of his corny jokes, and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, he had passed away. But there was something strange. In fact, beyond strangekinda weird. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on a chair beside the bed. What a great story about prayer. Prayer is something you are going to hear about weekly at Mountainside beginning the first Sunday of January through our Prayer Encounter Weekend on March This last fall I had a strong impression from the Holy Spirit to focus on prayer for the beginning months of 2016 up to Palm Sunday. I am really looking forward to this focus and especially the Prayer Encounter Weekend with Rev. Terry Teykl. I really encourage you to make a special commitment to not miss a Sunday and to begin lifting up our church and this season in prayer. As I mentioned last Sunday please mark your calendars now for March so that you don t miss this important weekend in the life of our church. More details and information will follow but that s enough for now. Blessings and Happy New Year! In God s Grace, John The PRAYER ENCOUNTER Is coming to Mountainside UMC Mark your calendars for March with Rev. Terry Teykl

6 Winter Ball Mountainside is having it s very own Winter Ball Adult dance this January 30th from 7 to 9PM. All those eighteen and older are invited to come and dance the night away in Wagner Hall. Twinkling lights, wonderful music across generations, and special sweet treats are making this dance one of a kind! A donation of a canned good or non-perishable food to the local East Mountain Food Pantry is appreciated in lieu of a cover charge. If you would like to help with this event in any way please call Callie at Children s Movie Night This special movie night is being held in conjunction with the Winter Ball, on January 20th from 7 to 9PM! As the adults have fun dancing the evening away, the kids are welcome to a Kids Movie Night held in the Sanctuary! We ll be showing the wonderfully acclaimed movie Inside Out and also munching down on great movie snacks! Feel welcome to bring fluffy pillows and warm blankets! If you know your kids would like to attend movie night, please call Callie at Youth We had an amazing night at the Youth Lock-In, beginning with an inspirational Christmas talk with Pastor John, and ending with waking up to Breakfast with Santa. We had games, gifts, an all-night snack table, and fun movies, but the best was enjoying the church in a way that we usually do not get to see it, with all the lights off. Whether we were glowing in the blacklight, decked out in a full body suit of glow-wear, or just glowing from the joy of it all, we got the chance to be the light in the dark. Everyone was a winner in our Blacklight Dodgeball Games, complete with our Rockin Youth DJ s and MC Tif. Thank you to Ryan and Elizabeth for being awesome volunteers and for all the donations that made it possible. Ending on a Great Note: Mission Donations On behalf of the Finance Committee and Administrative Council, I want to express great appreciation to all of you who have been faithful in your financial support of Mountainside UMC. Because of your faithful contribution to this ministry, we actually received more in donations than our projected budget for Given the positive net income, the Finance Committee and Administrative Council decided to increase our donations to four mission projects supported by Mountainside UMC. The result is that in addition to previous contributions, we recently donated $7000 to East Mountain Food Pantry, $7000 to S.E. Coleman and her ministry to orphanages in Guatamala and Uganda, $7000 to the McFrederick s mission in the Czech Republic and finally $7000 to the Lord s Mountain Orphanage in Zambia, Africa. Your generosity to Mountainside UMC has led to this increased support to these great ministries and those who lead them who work to spread the Good News of the Gospel of Christ. Way to go! page 6
