Moses and the Israelites had been in the desert for 40 years before being led to the land of milk and honey. There were times when they called out to God, sure that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. We sometimes spend time in the desert as well. Not a literal desert most of the time, but a desert in which it seems difficult to perceive God s presence, times when we face difficulty and are tempted to leave God s ways behind. On this First Sunday of Lent, Jesus shows us what to do in these moments: stand firm and trust in God. S F It may be difficult for us to imagine Jesus being tempted. He was God, after all. But he was also fully human and faced the temptations and trials of life just like the rest of us. In fact, this is one of the key aspects of our faith. Jesus came to be one with us in all things but sin. He understands our weaknesses and the difficulties that sometimes happen in life, and he is with us, strengthening us to stand firm in faith, as he did in the desert, throughout his earthly ministry, and on the cross. T G When Moses and the Israelites were in the desert, they sometimes grumbled. Fearful and anxious, they questioned whether God was really with them, in spite of the many signs and wonders of God s fidelity to them. Gradually, they learned to trust that God would always lead and be with them. They grew in awareness of God s presence, and were thankful for the gifts of God in their midst. In celebrating the first harvest in the Promised Land, they gave their first fruits back to God as a sign of their gratitude. Have you ever grumbled at God in a time of anxiety or worry? It is in just such moments that we may learn from Jesus, who responded to temptation by turning toward God and trusting God s will completely. Look around. Be attentive to the many blessings in your life and know that all good things come from God. Lent is a season when we turn our lives around, opening our hearts and lives to see the Lord s goodness and responding to it with our lives. Let us follow Jesus out of the desert, ready to give of our first fruits, the fruits of our lives, talents, resources, and faith. This is the season in our liturgical year when the hurch encourages us to increase our prayer, fasting and almsgiving in order to enter more deeply into the mystery of our Lord s Passion and Death and to celebrate more fully His Resurrection. Jesus, by His own example in today s Gospel, demonstrates the necessity of setting aside a period of time devoted especially to prayer and fasting as a means of strengthening our spiritual muscles. Just before the launch of His public ministry, He is led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. While our Lord was strong enough to withstand the temptations of the devil on His own, we most certainly are not! We must turn to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to show us where we need to grow, and then rely on the Holy Spirit for strength and guidance throughout these 40 days of growth. Perhaps we will be led to take on a spiritual reading program, or a daily time of meditation on the Scriptures. Maybe we ll be inspired to fast from our favorite food or social media fix and find a project that serves the poor in this community. If these spiritual exercises hurt a little, that means we are doing them right! At the end of this season, we will be prepared to enter into the grace-filled days of the Triduum and we will, through the power of the Holy Spirit, be resurrected as a new creation with our Lord come Easter. 3 St. Norbert Bulletin Page 3 From Fr. Steve T DESERT... F S... A friend of mine was very active in the ursillo movement started in Spain that helps develop hristian leaders. At their weekly small group gatherings, each individual is supposed to report on their progress by answering the following questions: 1) P : How s your prayer life? Who did you pray for this week? 2) E : Did you read anything that got you closer to Jesus? Scripture? atholic articles or literature? Listen to atholic radio, podcast or view video by Bishop Barron or another Scripture writer, thinker, author or speaker? 3) S : Did you talk to anyone about Jesus? These sound like pretty easy ideas and steps that anyone can incorporate into their journey of discipleship. To help you take your first steps this year, we have organized our Faithful onnections groups to explore the Gospel readings each Sunday and see how Jesus is showing us how to be an even more fervent disciple. If you are unable to join one of these groups, you can follow along here in my column. Each week, I will provide you with the questions our groups are discussing on the Gospel and Dr. Edward Sri s book: Into His Likeness: Be Transformed as a Disciple of hrist. To participate from home, do the following before getting to the questions: Video: We have prepared a very short video each week by either myself, Fr. Arul, Deacon John or Deacon Steve who will be the homilist at most of the Masses that Sunday. It should only take you about 10 minutes DESERT G Q : Jesus temptation in the DESERT is the first stop on our five-week journey walking in his steps. Why the DESERT? Because we need to get rid of distractions and deny ourselves to get closer and to know God. Just as the devil tempts Jesus, we too are tempted with trials that are part of the life of faith and discipleship. What are the obstacles, temptations, or trials you are facing in your walk with Jesus this Lent? D. S B Q : Introduction: On pages 4-5 of Dr. Sri s book he says, In the first century world of Jesus, a disciple was all about one key word, imitation. The goal of the disciple wasn t merely to master his rabbi s teachings but to imitate the way he lived. A true disciple knows what he is made for: transformation into hrist. But he also knows the many ways he falls short. Discipleship is all about moving from A to B. Are you a fan or a follower of Jesus? What s keeping you from being as rabid about Jesus as you are about the Eagles or Netflix or social media? Follow Me: On pages 10-11, Dr. Sri writes: Maybe you have experienced certain moments when you sense God is calling you to do something. Those little nudges from God, those subtle promptings of the Holy Spirit are moments when Jesus is inviting you to follow Him more deeply. And they happen often in the midst of ordinary hristian daily lives. Do you ever get the sense that God is talking to you, calling you or do you think it is your imagination? What do you think Jesus is calling you to do to deepen your discipleship in him? Next week we continue on our journey as we climb the MOUNTAIN to Jesus Transfiguration...and ours! Fr. Steve

Recently, a donor came forward and gift cards for the Fresh Grocer were given to St. Gabe s families. On another front, the Knitting lub at Daylesford Abbey had several boxes of their work with no idea what to do. Marsha was able to arrange a delivery of hats and scarves to Bethesda for use in the recent cold snap. Finally, a Val- entine s Day card was received from the moms at the West hester Gaudenzia addiction treatment and recovery which we support not only at hristmas, but with our weekly food distribution.
