M (R ) This week, Jesus tells us that we must examine our own inner selves, our attitudes and dispositions, virtues and faults, rather than judging others. What is in our hearts comes out in what and how we speak. If our hearts are filled with kindness and compassion, those qualities will be evident in our speaking, just as beautiful, wholesome fruit comes only from healthy trees. And vice-versa. The Wisdom writer Sirach in the first reading agrees with this concept that we will be judged by our words. Paul reminds us that the reward of discipleship is eternal life. Today s psalm of thanksgiving and praise reminds us of God s kindness and faithfulness, which we are to emulate in our thoughts, words, and deeds. We are known, each of us, by our own fruit. W A F What do these two things have in common? In Luke s Gospel today, Jesus uses the image of a fruit tree to explain the importance of speaking with care. If the tree is healthy (that is, good), we expect to enjoy tasty fruit, but no one would pick the fruit of a tree that appears to be diseased. Good fruit is like good words that indicate one s spiritual growth and maturity a person whose heart and words are filled with goodness. We will be known as good or evil by the qualities of mercy and compassion, or pride and selfishness that come from our hearts and enter the world through our mouth. We hear similar advice from the book of Sirach in our first reading. Just as the fruit will indicate whether or not the tree from which it came was healthy, so too do our words indicate what we think, how we view the world and our neighbors. Words are important, indeed. A A V But what about our actions? These surely are also signs of goodness or the opposite, aren t they? Today s psalm sings about the just ones who will be like trees flourishing in the house of the Lord, bearing fruit throughout their lives. Justice implies action mercy, compassion, love. In the second reading, Paul advises the orinthians to devote themselves to the work of the Lord, that their labors would not be in vain, because the reward of acting with integrity is victory over sin and death. The person of justice and integrity acts and speaks from a new heart, made possible by Jesus sacrifice. Do actions speak louder than words? Maybe between this Gospel and last week s, when Jesus told us to love our enemies, Jesus is showing us that both are vital and essential aspects of following the life of discipleship. The first reading from Sirach offers timeless counsel: the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had: so too does one s speech disclose the bent of one s mind. Praise no one before he speaks. Jesus uses the very same analogy in today s Gospel reading from Luke: A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. Everything we have is a gift from God to be used for His honor and glory. In the same Gospel passage, Jesus reminds us, No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. The more time we spend with Jesus, our teacher, through regular prayer and a strong sacramental life, the more we will become like Him. Then all that we do and say (and tweet and post) will bring others to closer to Him. This is the life s work of the hristian steward. 3 St. Norbert Bulletin Page 3 From Fr. Steve D P... H L! That may seem like an odd salutation or start to our Lenten season this coming Ash Wednesday, but it is meant in all sincerity. While Lent is a season of introspection, prayer, penance, alms giving and, perhaps gloom with the weather, it is also a time to reflect on the wonderful gifts God has given us through His son our savior Jesus hrist. With that in mind, this Lent we are taking some new steps in following Jesus. You may remember that at hristmas, we presented you with the book Into His Likeness: Be Transformed as a Disciple of hrist by Dr. Edward Sri. For the past month or so, we have been exploring what it means to be a disciple of Jesus through my columns. I ve found the book to be a comforting practical guide to following in Jesus footsteps just as his disciples did. You may have noticed when you walked into hurch today our theme for this Lent: In His STEPS. With this theme, our homilies will go deeper into the transformation of the followers of Jesus into his disciples. Each Sunday this Lent, Fr. Arul, Deacons John and Steve, and I will link the homilies to the Gospels and Dr. T F O T... S A Many atholics who are not active in the hurch will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. Jewish people customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for hristians may be a lockwise from above: The rams horn called the shofar calls the faithful to the Day of Atonement; prayers at the Western Wall Temple Mount; Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras leading to Ash Wednesday ashes. Sri s book exploring the practical ways we all can become even more fervent disciples through our daily lives and witness. We will follow Jesus as he takes us on the following stops: 1) DESERT: Why the desert? Because we need to get rid of all the distractions that are keeping us from following in Jesus steps. 2) MOUNTAIN: What baggage are you carrying as you climb up the mountain with Jesus to his Transfiguration and yours? 3) GARDEN: What steps are you taking to pull the weeds in your garden, just as Jesus challenges the gardener of the Barren Fig tree? 4) BANQUET: What is preventing you from reconciling with God to prepare for His heavenly banquet, just as the Prodigal Son prepared for his? 5) HOME: What steps is Jesus asking you to take in your life to sin no more, just as he asked the Woman aught in Adultery, and spread his word in your home and community? This is my first Lent as your new pastor. I want to invite you to celebrate with us as a parish community the unfolding of the Pascal Mystery that takes place during the Holy Week Tridium with Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. And I look forward to continuing our journey through the Easter Season as we follow the Apostles and Disciples onto Pentecost. Happy Easter! Fr. Steve festive Mardi Gras celebration, the Jewish New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah is celebrated before the Day of Atonement to God where people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent. James Field, J. S. Paluch o.
