1 COLUMBIANISM-THE FOUNDATION OF THE DOMESTIC CHURCH Pennsylvania State Council Knights of Columbus Editor and Distribution: Rick Terroni FSS Volume # 62 Issue # 2 October 2018 State Deputy Mark Jago, FIC My Brother Knights and Sisters in Christ, We have just completed the First Quarter of the current Fraternal Year. I am amazed at how quickly these three months have passed and how much has been accomplished. We started off very well with a successful District Deputy Organizational Meeting at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College. As promised, there were numerous changes in the manner in which these meetings are conducted. From what I have heard, most attendees were pleased with these changes. We accomplished a great deal in preparing for the year ahead. Our next District Deputy meeting will be Dec 15 and 16. The Pennsylvania Delegation had a wonderful time at the 136 th Annual Supreme Convention in Baltimore, Aug 4-9. Administrative Assistant Stan Glowaski and his wife, Anna Marie did a terrific job in preparing our hospitality room for the many visitors from throughout the Order. Our Supreme Knight gave an outstanding report on the past year s accomplishments and outline the objectives of our new programs and goals. The high point for me was representing our jurisdiction by carrying the relic of St. John Neumann during the Memorial Mass on Wednesday. The previous day, I carried the Icon of Our Lady Help of the Persecuted Christians at its dedication during Mass. I was extremely humbled and moved to have had such an honor. State Chaplain Father (COL) Gregory D Emma concelebrated every convention Mass. In addition, he had the opportunity to concelebrate with Supreme Chaplain Archbishop Lori at the Basilica of Baltimore, where our founder, the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney, was ordained. In September, the jurisdiction conducted the first of our Life Programs, the Silver Rose. I hope that many of you had the opportunity to participate in this event at a parish near you. As you read this newsletter, plans are being implemented to conduct our first Faith Program, the Marion Icon Prayer devotion to Blessed Mother, under the title of Our Lady Help of the Persecuted Christians. Please check our state website for dates and parish locations in your area. (Continued on Page 2)
2 October 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 4 Life Required Program Novena For Life The protection of life is a sustained prayer intention of the Church, and in particular of the Knights of Columbus. Knights remain firmly committed to defending the right to life of every human being from the moment of conception to natural death. To commemorate and bolster this important cause, councils will promote a novena, nine days of sustained prayer, to build up a culture of life in our parishes, homes and wider community. The Pennsylvania State Council Life Team is requesting that each Council discuss and plan this program ASAP to make sure that this requirement is completed in a timely manner. Grand Knights should have already held a meeting with their Life Directors to set up a program schedule. The most important program to plan is the Novena for Life. Working with your pastor, obtain his recommendations on conducting this program. Requirements for the nine days are broad and should be molded to suit your parish and community. Some may feel a nine day Novena would suffice and others may choose to plan a nine week or nine month. Be creative in your promotion and scheduling of this program! Possibly have a prayer time before nine meetings, starting with a rosary and ending with all attending a weekday Mass. Post a prayer in the Parish Bulletin for nine weeks asking all to pray sometime within that week and conclude with a final service for all to attend. The goal of each Council is to get others in the parish involved and aware of our commitment to defending the right to life of every human being from the moment of conception to natural death. Today, more than ever, it is important for the Knights of Columbus to lead the charge against the Culture of Death rampant in our society. The time has come to Storm the gates of Heaven. IF NOT US, THEN WHO? IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN? For more details on how to conduct and obtain support materials, go to the supreme website at: Life Director John Meenan (570) life@pakofc.us Deputy Life Director Gary Damich (724) gdamich@gmail.com Assistant Life Director David Spacht (814) spacht1@yahoo.com

Yakubick (Alexis) stateprograms@pakofc.us State Deputy Report (Continued) In this issue, you will find more information about two important programs which need your attention, the Family of the Month and Refund Support Vocation Program (RSVP). These two programs are vital parts of our effort to Build the Domestic Church. Every council should recognize the outstanding examples of active, charitable Catholic Families within our communities and participate in the material and spiritual support of our seminarians. They need our prayers, encouragement, and especially our financial support, now that the school year has started. At this difficult time, it would be unforgiveable to allow a young man to abandon his vocation because he can t afford to attend the seminary. The new school term has started. The holiday season is quickly approaching. Please, mail your RSVP checks NOW! Recruiting is every member s responsibility. The new Online Membership Program has made the process much easier. Now you can use your Smartphone and sign-up a member on the spot. This program is doing very well, but WE NEED MORE DEGREES and MORE CANDIADATES. We are a little behind in our membership goal, at present. I know that I can count on you to catch up, in the next quarter. Remember, all it takes to recruit a new member is for you to JUST ASK. 4 October 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 3 Faith in Action Program Model Faith Program Category Marian Icon Prayer Program: Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians Do you question the potential impact of Prayer; especially Communal Prayer? Well Don t! Evidence of the effectiveness of purposeful prayer can be found in both the bible and in documented historical accounts. Furthermore, many of us have experienced, first hand, the benefit prayer has had in our daily lives and that of our loved ones especially those requesting the assistance of our Blessed Mother. The Knights of Columbus Marion Icon Prayer Program featuring the Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians icon is designed to raise awareness of the plight Christians persecuted for their faith and to stand in prayerful solidarity with them. Councils hosting the Marion Icon offer all their Brother Knights, their families and community members an extraordinary opportunity to participate in a focused communal prayer service seeking our Blessed Mother s intercession for the benefit of all persecuted Christians especially those in the Middle East. Mary, our Mother s power of intercession with her Son and our Lord, Jesus is as great now as it was in the past. We seek her help in giving worth to our prayers for the help and protection of all at risk Christians throughout the world. The travelling Marion Icon Prayer Service materials will arrive in Pennsylvania State Council s Jurisdiction shortly. All Regions should begin to plan their area s hosting schedules to maximize local Council participation at this time. 5 October 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 5 Faith in Action Family Programs Councils should have decided which 4 Family Programs they will conduct this Fraternal Year to earn the Columbian Award. Remember, you must conduct the required Family Program, Consecration to the Holy Family, to achieve this award. You should be planning dates in your parishes and ordering supplies from the Supreme Council. More information can be found at or contact Assistant Family Director Alton Wise. You can decide which of the other programs you will conduct based on individual Council preferences. Look at the Supreme website, for information on all Recommended Programs. The Family Featured Program, Food for Families, will allow you to get credit for 2 Programs provided you meet the Featured Program requirements. Details can be found on the Supreme Council website programs/family/food-for-families.html#. It is October and Councils should be planning their Keep Christ in Christmas activity. Councils have many ways to participate; look on the PA State Council website, for ideas or contact Assistant Family Director George Schneider Jr. One area where we need your help is the Family of the Month / Year! The Supreme Council has established a very easy to follow process that every Council in Pennsylvania should be using. Each month, the Council picks a Family that models Christian family values and models them every day. The chosen Family does not have to be from the Council. The Family of the Month Report Form (#10668) must be completed and sent to fraternalmission@kofc.org. Copies should be sent to statedeputy@pakofc.us and family@pakofc.us. The family will be given the Family of the Month Certificate (#1843) at a Council or Church event. Supreme Council will also randomly pick winning families for a special Holy Family gift. 6 October 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 6 FAITH IN ACTION COMMUNITY PROGRAM KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SOCCER CHALLENGE The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is one of two sporting events available to boys and girls ages 9 through 14. The event is held in late summer/early fall by local K of C councils. The object of the challenge is to score as many points as possible by kicking a soccer ball through designated areas in a soccer goal. At the council level, each participant gets 15 kicks. The scores are determined by kicking a ball through marked off areas in the soccer goal. The point values are 20 for upper left and right corners, 10 points for lower left and right corners, and 5 points when getting the ball into the goal through the other areas. Participants start at local council levels and the winners progress through higher levels of competition. The next level is the district level where the participant gets 25 kicks. The winners of the district levels move onto the regional competition, and these winners go on to the state level. Each of these last two levels get 25 kicked also. Tie scores are settled by sudden death kicks by each participant. State champions are then combined with international champions, and one winner is selected in each age/sex group. Make sure you tell him what the dress code is, suit tie or business causal (no shorts, tank tops, sneakers, etc.) this should be done for all degrees. 9 October 2018 KEYSTONE KNIGHT Page 9 COAL Chance of a Lifetime The 2018 COAL program is under way. Chance books were mailed to the Councils in June. The first payment date which represents the least cost to the Councils is approaching. The cost associated with any payments postmarked by October 12 th is $3.25 per book. Stubs do not need to be returned with the payment. This represents an advance payment; therefore, Councils can continue with their sales. Cost for payments postmarked between October 12 th and November 1 st is $3.50 per book and after November 1 st the cost is $3.75 per book. The early delivery bonus and sales bonus will still apply. For each book stub sent to the committee by December 1 st the Council will receive $.25 per book. The sales bonus is $1.00 for each COAL book sold over the quantity sold during the 2017 campaign. For new participants the starting point is 50 books. In order to make the 2018 COAL program a success, your continued support is needed. Make this year a success for both your Council s Treasury and the Scholarships we provide for our children. These are the two areas that benefit from the sales of COAL chances. In order to participate in the Scholarship program your Council must sell a minimum of 50 books. It is important for us to work together in order to make scholarships available for our children. If you have not received books or want additional books please contact me at If you have any questions please contact either Joe Caromano or Dan Eury Joe Caromano, FST COAL Chairman
