St. Jude s now has a Vestry. Last Sunday the following people (in alphabetical order) were unanimously elected: Mr. Andy McLean, Junior Warden (1 yr. Vestry term) Mrs. Mary Neal, Vestrywoman (3 yr. Vestry term) Dr. Tom Newbill, Senior Warden (2 yr. Vestry term) These Vestry members will serve as advisors to the Rector and as administrators of Church property and funds. While the Rector/Vicar is charged with the worship of the congregation, the Vestry is charged with hiring people and setting wages in the church. The Vestry should communicate and interact with the congregation in support of the Rector, and in order to helpfully advise him. I urge the congregation to reach out to Vestry members in helping them do their duty. See the attached canons for details of Vestry duties and functions. Mary Jane is visiting with her mother in Mississippi, and we were most thankful for the services of Mr. Chris Kulp on the organ last Sunday. Also, we were treated to a surprise on Easter Sunday with the beautiful solo of Mr. Ken Mills, who also plays. Plus, I hear that several of our youth are growing in their piano skills. The musical talent base of St. Jude s is widening, and we hope to feature some of that talent in worship during the year. My humblest apologies to the Peaseley family for bungling our prayer list for college students. I included Martha Peaseley as preparing for college in the fall, but forgot to include Lee Peaseley who is a Junior at Washington and Lee.

3 The daughter of our Diocesan treasurer, Rev. Franklin Sanders, is heading to Rwanda on Thursday, April 11, for a mission trip. She will be doing Vacation Bible School for 5,000 kids. Some of these families walk over half a day to come to this and return. Fr. Franklin has requested prayer for safety and success, and I ask you to join me in that. Her name is Liberty Bain. The Bishop is coming! The Bishop is coming! Look busy. Mark your calendars for the Bishop s Episcopal visit to St. Jude s on Sunday, April 21 st. For Your Prayers this Week: For Dr. Brad Rodgers (Bother-in Law of Andy Mclean) as he recovers from illness and hospitalization. For Marianne Morse as she continues her battle with cancer. For our college students Hagan Neal and Lee Peaseley, and for Olivia Mclean and Martha Peaseley who are preparing to enter college in the fall. For Margaret Ann McLean and Nick Mazzenga as they prepare for Holy Matrimony in August. For Liberty Bain s mission trip to Rwanda. The governing body of a local Parish or Mission Parish is the Vestry. Section 2. A Vestry shall consist of: a Rector s Warden (or Senior Warden) and a People s Warden (or Accounting Warden or Junior Warden) and some number of Vestrymen. The Warden s shall serve a term of office for one year; but shall continue in office until their successor is chosen. The Wardens are ex officio members of the Vestry. The number of Vestrymen and the term of office of Vestrymen shall be determined by the Charter or By-Laws of the Parish or by the Parish at a stated meeting.

5 Section 3. The Rector is ex officio chairman of the Vestry. If the Rector is not present the Rector s Warden is chairman of the Vestry. If the Rector and the Rector s Warden are not present the People s Warden is Chairman. A Deacon who is Minister-in-Charge of a Parish may act as Chairman upon the vote of the Vestry, but he shall have no vote. The Vicar of a Mission Parish may preside by the appointment of the Bishop, but he shall have no vote unless he be elected as Chairman of the Vestry, in which case he shall serve as Chairman throughout his tenure unless he resign the office of Chairman. Section 4. The Rector s Warden: He shall be elected at an Annual Parish Meeting. He shall be nominated by the Rector. He should be a person of outstanding Christian character. In consultation with the Bishop, he shall provide a supply for the pulpit in the case of illness, absence or resignation of the minister. He is the custodian of the Parish Register if there be no Rector or Minister-in-Charge. Section 5. The People s Warden, (Accounting or Junior Warden) shall be elected at the Annual Parish Meeting. He shall be responsible for the funds of the Parish. If any Parish, Mission or other work chooses to elect a Treasurer the Treasurer discharges his responsibility for and on behalf of the People s Warden. He should be a person of especial Christian character and be qualified in business ability. Note: For purposes at law and for churches and other agencies that find it necessary to incorporate, the Senior Warden holds the office consistent with President of a corporation. The Junior Warden holds the office consistent with Secretary/Treasurer of a corporation. The office of Treasurer in this church is consistent with that of a comptroller or burser, and is not an officer of the Board of Directors, nor shall a Treasurer have a vote on the Vestry unless a Vestryman be elected as Treasurer. Section 6. It shall be the duty of the Vestry to hold in trust all real and personal property of the Parish for the People of the Parish, to administer all investments and holdings, to regulate all its temporal concerns, to act in calling a Rector or Minister-in-Charge unless otherwise provided by the Charter and By-Laws of the Parish, to employ all other persons serving the Parish, and to set the amount of salary and wages paid. Vestrymen are in a position of fiduciary trust to the local church. Section 7. Unless authorized by charter or by-laws, the Vestry shall not purchase or sell real property, or encumber real property without prior authorization of a duly convened Parish Meeting. Section 8. In jurisdictions where churches and church agencies are required by the civil authorities to have trustees the Wardens and the Vestry shall be the trustees. If there be insufficient number of Vestry to satisfy the legal requirements, then the Wardens, or Warden if there be only one, shall appoint persons of good character to act as Trustees who shall only transact any business as the Vestry shall direct.
