Assembly Bulletin Autumn 2018 Knights of Columbus ~ Patriotic Degree 1st Ontario District Archbishop James V. Cleary Assembly #0857, Kingston, ON 1922 ~ 2018 A New Season is upon us. Let us enthusiastically embrace our new opportunities with grateful Thanksgiving. The Faithful Navigator Report As we are encouraged to build the domestic church and evangelize. The Knights of Columbus offers men a place to lead their families and communities in faith and service and put their Faith into Action. Knights of Columbus members, parishes and families have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference. Our regalia stands out for all to see. The fourth degree is the visible arm of the order serving our bishops and priests. Our brothers and sisters in the church see us as leaders. This is a form of evangelization. By organizing activities in their parishes and communities, Assemblies will educate and evangelize using the rich resources found and prominent colours we wear. As Knights we Grow in faith and build strong parishes and Churches. We aid priests and religious information. We honor Mary, mother of God, and we engage in serious spiritual reflections and religious education activities. Knights are called to serve others. Our first principle is Charity at home with our families and in our communities. When Knights of Columbus members come together as one through their council and parish, they accomplish great things. I wear my regalia with great pride, I may stand out in the community but I am also recognized in the community. When not in my regalia I am still a knight and always approachable, willing to serve our Lord. I look forward to marching and serving with each and everyone of you. Let's wear our colours proudly. John MacIntyre

It is rare for priests to openly discuss day to day problems that affect themselves within their vocation, affect their vocation as a whole and affect their ability to minister within their assigned parishes. But I accidentally discovered a very revealing document that is an educational read. In 2017 Fr Cosmas Asjawara (currently at St Mary s Parish Carleton Place) submitted his Thesis to the Faculty of Theology, Saint Paul University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Ministry entitled, Rich Harvest and Few Laborers: The Challenges and Opportunities of Priestly Life and Ministry in the Roman Catholic Ecclesiastical Province of Kingston. The first thing I learned was the difference between the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston and the Roman Catholic Ecclesiastical Province of Kingston. The latter actually contains four dioceses: Kingston, Alexandria-Cornwall, Peterborough and Sault Saint Marie. Now many years of consuming military briefs have nurtured my habit of skipping the discussion, focus on the findings and recommendations and if I have questions review the applicable text in the discussion. That does not work so well with a pure academic paper, but it certainly captured my attention and drew me to review (I will admit to some skim reading) the entire thesis. This research was the first of its kind in Canada compiling a systematic study of the characteristics, life, and ministry of Priests. What I really found interesting was the ten most common problems faced by Canadian Priests. The study was based on input from 140 priests (about 45% ) from across the Ecclesiastical Province of Kingston. (Inset) Four may be worthy of understanding so that we can appreciate our Priests daily problems but are outside of our ability to influence. I doubt I can affect the theological differences in the concept of priesthood. More importantly, six are things that I or we as knights can strive to assist our priests. I could fill a whole bulletin with my opinion on how we can assist our priest; however, my opinion is but one voice, and the collective power of unity will be needed if we are to make a real difference. The difficulty of really reaching people today Theological differences in the concept of priesthood Shortage of available priest The way authority is exercised in the Church. Parish restructuring in the diocese Unrealistic demands and expectations of lay people Pastoring more than one parish Loneliness of priestly Life Too much work Uncertainty about the future of the Church I encourage you to read Fr Cosmas entire thesis, then as Knights discuss with your priest what are his ten most common problems and how can we help to minimize them. Don t let this study collect dust. Instead turn it into a Knights action plan to support our Priests. The Thesis can be found at its primary source: Also located on our Diocesan Association website. Vivat Jesus Pete Scott

Support a mission In May of 2003, my late Wife (Irene) and I started to support a young girl in India through the Sisters of Our Lady of the Assumption in Edmunston NB. The contact in India was through the Holy Cross Fathers. The little girl is called Jyothi. Irene passed away in November of Throughout these years, we (My present wife Doris and I) have been receiving letters from her and the Holy Cross Fathers, outlining her progress. She turned out to be a straight A student. This past spring we received wonderful news that Jyothi has decided to enter the convent and become a nun with the Sisters of the Holy Cross. (St. Brother Andre was also a member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross). She related how excited whe was to be able to serve our Lord. I can assure everhone here that we were also bvery excited by this news. I might point out that my late wife always wanted a girl but that was not God s wish we have three wonderful boys. She chose to sponser a girl at the outset for this very reason. She chose well. SK Ron Tessier SK Larry Kennedy received his 4 th Deg Honorary Life Certificate & Lapel pin from Assembly 857 & 4 th Deg Hon Life card from Supreme in Late July.

Editorial: Dear Brother Knights, Well, Summer is almost over and we are looking at a new season, a new beginning and new plans. Whenever we are starting anew, it s always best to keep in mind that we should allow God to be in the driver s seat. He has wonderful plans for us and we will only ever see their fruition if we give Him the control. Some of us may consult with Him at home but then we strike out on our own and leave him behind for the trip. If we get into trouble, we reason, we can figure it out. Got often has to try to pick up the pieces of our wreck when we do this. Some of us let God join us on the drive but, like a back-seat driver, we often don t quite understand what he s saying or we just ignore it as unimportant to the task at hand. Again, He s left to pick up the pieces of our life when we inevitably run into trouble because we tried to do it ourselves. Some, hand over the keys to God and say, I ll take shotgun. He listens, he may even agree with our ideas but His Plan is the one we re following. I don t do a very good job of handing over the keys, like a drunk who thinks he s capable of driving, I am sometimes reluctant to hand over the keys to my life. What if I m asked to do something I don t want to do? What if I m asked to do something that s too hard. What if I miss out on doing something fun that I want to do. Brothers, Anything God asks us will be something we can do. As I heard our Youth minister, Kevin Alexander, say today, God doesn t call the equipped, he equips the called. He will give us the tools we need for anything he calls us to. That includes the rewards we will feel from completing God s will. We won t miss out on live, we will live life to the fullest. As a change of topic, I feel like I would like to repeat a message I wrote to my Council, 9652, in their recent newsletter. Fellow Council members, Please excuse the repetition. I have been struggling with the news out of Pennsylvania, where you likely heard that a grand Jury has decided that as many as 300 priests may have abused several thousand children over the past several 7 decades. So what are we to think of this? How do we handle a situation where the Church we have deep connections to has covered up abuse of this magnitude? Is the Church corrupt? Has our Faith been betrayed? What should we do? Is this just a vendetta out to paint our beloved Church as evil? Some may find it hard to believe that so many priests were involved. The numbers must be wrong said one person. Well, even if it s just one priest whose abuse of just one child was covered up and enabled by a higher-up to save face, that is horrendous, it s unconscionable. I have heard of people who are tempted to leave the church. I implore you all to instead lead our church back to Christ, back to its proper faith in Jesus Christ. Too many individuals have put faith in people rather than in the Church and Specifically, the founder of the Church, Jesus Christ himself. It is people who are corrupt, meaning we are all, each one of us, sinners. Some of our sins are less harmful than others but not one of us can claim to have lead a perfect holy life, except if our Name is Mary and our only son is Jesus. We must know that the Church is more than the sum of its members. It is the body of Christ. We need to strive to lead our fellow neighbors and church-goers by our example, our encouragement, our friendship and our prayers. And we all need to stand up and call out abuse of any kind. We need to learn what to look for so we can know when someone is abusing and so we can avoid situations where our own motives might be called into question. Let us raise our own awareness of the weakness of ourselves and our neighbors and be ready to stand up for the innocent; the one who has no voice. A strong faith-filled Church means we are all looking out for each other. We all need each other s support and strength and prayers. 7 The Patriotic Order, the 4 th Degree of the Knights of Columbus So, in a sick leave mode. I find that I am still able to do somethings just not what I used to do. I am thankful for all of the prayers, well wishes and help my Brothers have given. Thank You. So in 1900, the 4 th Degree was instituted, 18 years after the Order was founded, tails and top hats were the Dress of a Gentleman, going to a formal occasion. Suits were usual dress for church, Tails were for important events. The Tails, Top Hat and service baldric and sword was the first official dress of the 4 th Degree. In time, I think in the 60 s, The Order found that tails and top hats were not the dress up clothing for Gentlemen. Tuxedos were to replace the tail coats and top hat. A chapeau, cape would be the new official dress code. For all 4 th Degree members, a tuxedo and social baldric would be the non-formal attire for events such as socials. I was not there, but I am sure there was a considerable uproar, lots of problems for the Supreme council of the day. I know in 1967, I have seen a picture on the steps of St. Mary s with 120 new Sir Knights in tail coats and top hats. The priests of the day were in cassocks, with white surplices all looking very much appropriate for the day. So, the Year 2000 changed some things, and made other things extinct I am sure the Supreme Council was struggling to find out why; the order was not continually growing. Why are men of all ages not signing up to the great fraternal group in the world.?????? I know in Phoenix Arizona, the International Convention I was honoured to attend, as a delegate from a Great Jurisdiction, of its day, that the colours of the capes were for front in the discussions. I saw three different colours for all capes, from Vice Supreme Knights, to District Masters, to even the worthy Faithful Navigators and Sir Knights, let alone the other regalia s from Mexico and the Philippines, which were not really what we would wear. So, how does the order grow? If there are 10 new 3 rd degree Knights in an exemplification. Then possibly 2 or even 3, might consider the 4 th degree. Of those 10 Knights. Some will become Insurance members. Some join because of family, a father of grandfather, some join because they like what they see, some join because they want to be apart of something that is good for the church, community and for their family. In a day when young people don t join almost nothing. What is the order to do? If the Supreme Council could just get a handle on that, maybe our young people would return to church, felt connected and want to do something, for the church or community. So, from its founding, the 4 th degree has had two uniforms. Now, someone feels that people won t join because of a tuxedo. I guess it could be a reason. However, for the Guards at a funeral and funeral home, for the Diocesan events for the Bishop, for our parishes and priests, for Remembrance Day, Santa Claus parade, and the Portuguese processions what will we look like without capes and chapeaus? I just don t see how the new uniform will work. It is cost effective. The Master looked very nice in the new regalia. However, I knew him how would most people know who was who?? In my daily prayer for health, and in thanksgiving, I remember all of my Brothers that I have come to know. I guess I need to pray for our Supreme council as well. Fraternally, Brother Ian Moore

Marian Prayer and Devotion Madonna with St. Francis - Correggio The Catechism of the Catholic Church instructs the faithful on just how Mary prayed. Mary still prays. She has a special role in the plan of salvation and is a model for all Christians: "Mary's prayer is revealed to us at the dawning of the fullness of time. Before the incarnation of the Son of God, and before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, her prayer cooperates in a unique way with the Father's plan of loving kindness: At the Annunciation, for Christ's conception; at Pentecost, for the formation of the Church, his Body. "In the faith of his humble handmaid, the Gift of God found the acceptance he had awaited from the beginning of time. She whom the Almighty made "full of grace" responds by offering her whole being: "Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word." "Fiat": this is Christian prayer: to be wholly God's, because he is wholly ours. "The Gospel reveals to us how Mary prays and intercedes in faith. At Cana, the mother of Jesus asks her son for the needs of a wedding feast; this is the sign of another feast - that of the wedding of the Lamb where he gives his body and blood at the request of the Church, his Bride. It is at the hour of the New Covenant, at the foot of the cross, that Mary is heard as the Woman, the new Eve, the true "Mother of all the living." "That is why the Canticle of Mary, the Magnificat (Latin) or Megalynei (Byzantine) is the song both of the Mother of God and of the Church; the song of the Daughter of Zion and of the new People of God; the song of thanksgiving for the fullness of graces poured out in Continued Next on Page

the economy of salvation and the song of the "poor" whose hope is met by the fulfillment of the promises made to our ancestors, "to Abraham and to his posterity forever" (CCC # ). The Catechism also addresses the ancient practice, present from the beginning of the Church, of seeking Mary's intercession. This is rooted in the Christian belief in the communion of saints. From antiquity, the Church has proclaimed, as St. Paul affirmed in his words to the Romans, that nothing can separate us from the love of God, not even death (Romans 8:38ff). As the author of the letter to the Hebrews affirmed, we are surrounded by a great "cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1). One of the great Catholic apologists of our age, Scott Hahn, once explained devotion to Mary with these words: "So we say, 'Well then, why give glory and honor and devotion to Mary?' Because we do whatever Jesus tells us. And we do whatever Jesus does because the fundamental axiom of Christian morality is the imitatio Christi, the imitation of Christ, and he is the best of the best when it comes to being a son. Not only a Son of his heavenly Father -but a Son of his earthly mother. Annunciation-with Cardinal - Antoniazzo Romano "When he accepts the mission of his Father to become a man and to obey the law, he obeys it more perfectly than anybody could have ever imagined it being obeyed. And when he gets to that commandment, "Honor your father and your mother," that Hebrew word, Kabodah, means bestow glory, comes from kabod weight, glory. So he honors his Father and obeys his command by bestowing unprecedented glory upon the one that he has chosen from all eternity to be his mother. The only time that the Creator created a human creature, created the one destined to be his mother. And he filled her with his own life and grace because he Continued Next on Page

began honoring as soon as she was created his mother." "So what do we do? We honor Christ and we glorify him and we imitate him. If we really imitate him, we do what he does and we honor and bestow glory upon his mother. Not instead of him. It isn't undermining devotion to Christ. It's to express our devotion of Christ, our worship of Christ by imitating him. And if we do it we're going to be able to see in her face, the face of our mother, because Jesus has taken on her flesh and blood and given us his own Divine nature. Peter says, "We are partakers of Divine nature through Christ" (2 Peter 1:2-11) so that his mother can become our mother, spiritually, supernaturally, but actually and really. And so in devotion to him, we can be devoted to her without any compromise, without any tug of war, without any diminution or decrease of our honor to Christ." In its treatment of the ancient creed's profession of our belief in the "communion of saints" the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: "After confessing "the holy Catholic Church," the Apostles' Creed adds "the communion of saints." In a certain sense this article is a further explanation of the preceding: "What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints?"the communion of saints is the Church. "Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others.... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church. But the most important member is Christ, since he is the head.... Therefore, the riches of Christ are communicated to all the members, through the sacraments." "As this Church is governed by one and the same Spirit, all the goods she has received necessarily become a common fund." The term "communion of saints" therefore has two closely linked meanings: communion in holy things (sancta)" and "among holy persons (sancti)" (CCC # a). Mary, the Mother of the Lord, is also our Mother as members of His family, His Body, the Church. She is a powerful intercessor in that family. Just as her intercession at the Wedding of Cana moved the heart of her Son, so her intercession on our behalf continues to move His Sacred Heart. Our Marian devotion and prayer is a treasure which leads us, as does all genuine Marian devotion, closer to her Son and into the communion of love in which she now participates in glory. We participate in that communion even now and her prayers assist us in our journey to its fullness. Mary, Mother of God...

Welcome thy neighbour! Sir Knights, I sincerely hope you had a great summer, one you can look back on fondly to some special place, event or people you encountered. I know Lucienne and I did. We will forever remember our time in Newfoundland this summer and will fondly remember the people. Lucienne and I like to travel and we try to make seeing our country, Canada, a priority. Although we have visited the eastern provinces a few times, we had not until this summer been to Newfoundland. Over the years I have worked with and known several from Newfoundland and found them to be good friends; but much of what they told me of their island home, I had little comprehension. After visiting most all corners of the island this summer, we experienced a lot and were impressed. The natural beauty of the parks, the mountains, the coasts and many villages and the wildlife was wonderful. But, what really amazed us and moved us was the people: their friendliness, their welcoming, generous, trusting, and helpful nature. Everywhere we went we encountered the nicest people. They made us instantly welcomed whether we were in a gift shop, a restaurant, a B&B or on a walk; Newfoundlanders took no delay in saying Hi! How r ya!. Where u from!, and then they would talk as if we had known each other before. These wonderful people and how we were welcomed will always remain with us, always. We made and left many friends on that island. I think we can learn much from our fellow Canadians of Newfoundland. Although, we have been treated well by citizens from other parts of Canada, it is the people of Newfoundland who do so most excellently. The people of Newfoundland are the friendliest and the most welcoming. Rather than showing indifference, coolness or are self-engage in their own activates, Newfoundlander s take notice of visitors, they welcome you, they talk to you and wish to know about you and they seek to help you. They have a kind and generous heart. Newfoundlanders exemplify what it is to be neighbourly and can teach us how to love thy neighbour. Fraternally, F. Captain: William Coppens Trustee 1st year S/K Garry Davis PFN Since the beginning of my life, I have always thought that there must be something better than the turmoil that was present at the time when I was born. My birth occured during World War II in My Uncle Keith was a Navigator in Lancaster bombers carrying out bombing missions over Germany. It was a difficult time for everyone. Luckily my Uncle survived but the airmen in the Lancaster bomber beside his aircraft were shot down. Even though I was very young I was introduced to life and death during that War. The question of what happens when a person dies was something that nobody seemed to be able to answer. Since then I have heard various suppositions regarding this factor. My father-in-law once responded to this question. "Heaven must be great because nobody has come back".

So I decided that the real answer to what follows death might be found in the Church of Christ and the Bible. The answer to this, which is found in the Bible, is the recorded death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In my younger years I attended the United Church. In 1962, when I was at the tender age of 22, I fell in love with my wife, Rena, whose family was firmly grounded in the Catholic faith. I decided that conversion to the Catholic faith was the right path for me to follow after discussions with a Catholic Chaplain at R.C.A.F. Station, Chatham N.B. That has turned out to have been an excellent choice along with our marriage of 56 years. Early in my conversion, I learned that believing in the love of God, keeping the ten Commandments, as well as the precepts of the Church would be a good way to start preparing myself for God's call at the end of my life. Of course there is more to it then that. I have always had the feeling during my life that whenever I was in danger or distresss, He was there to help and support me. All I had to do was call on Him in my prayers. I'm not going to quote examples of this but there are many. Therefore we should accept the fact that He is there for all of us to address our various needs. All we need to do is continually show our love for Him in our prayers and our deeds. I realize that death is not something that most people want to think or talk about. Unfortunately it is the reality of life. Many people have suffered hell on earth during their lifetime from disease, famine, poverty, and neglect. In my case, I have been very blessed to have enjoyed a relatively problem free life on this earth. As I look back on my journey through life, I am very thankful to our Lord for being there for me and helping me through the rough parts of this journey. May the Lord be with all of us in our journey through Life. Vivat Jesus Garry Davis
