1 March April 2016 Volume XXXIX Issue V Dear Brother Knights: One of the important missions of the Knights of Columbus is to promote pro-life causes. All of you are undoubtedly aware that presently our Parliament is required to enact a new law regarding assisted suicide (euthanasia). The previous law after several attempts to do so was struck down by our Supreme Court. That was a sad day in itself, especially since previous court decisions had all backed a total ban on assisted suicide. What has changed in our culture? What new factors have been found to now justify what was previously considered unjustifiable? Whatever the reasons for overturning a law which has stood the test of time and was in accord with the unbroken 2000 year tradition of the Judeo-Christian moral system, we are presented with a stark choice. Speak out and express our indignation at the ill-considered judgment of the Supreme Court, and demand that our lawmakers enact a law which will restrict the immoral practice of euthanasia, or let the lawmakers follow the advice of the advisory committee which has recommended open access for Canadians to the euphemistically named "medical assistance in dying" even for the mentally ill and minors without parental consent. Doctors and hospitals will find themselves in an irreconcilable situation if they are required by law to grant the "dying" access to licenced killing professionals. If not granted the right to conscientious objection they will be forced out of the medical profession and hospital care. Gentlemen, we've got a brief window of time to do something. With the help of God, the sole author of life, make your concerns known to your political representatives. Inundate their offices with your message of protest and urgent petition for a restrictive law. Pray, intercede, do penance for this cause. The Gospel of the Third Sunday of Lent contained a doubly insistent warning from Christ Himself: Unless you repent, you will all perish!!! 3 Continued Chaplain Killing innocent people in the womb or afterwards is one of the sins mentioned in the Bible which cries out to Heaven for justice. We in Canada have already been disposing of the unborn for years now. The cry to heaven of these little ones whose blood has been shed is deafening. If we add euthanasia to our shameful record of destroying human life, justice will surely fall on us sooner or later from the merciful heart of God who defends the life of the poor and the defenseless. Let us act now! Let us act in solidarity with all people who love God and love life. Demand just laws and insist on programs to strengthen palliative care for the sick and dying. One of the corporal works of mercy is to visit the sick. If the sick are not surrounded by love and a truly caring community, the evil one will sorely tempt them to despair, and despair can lead to a desire to take one's own life. As Knights, lets redouble our efforts to support our own brother Knights and their families who are experiencing sickness and isolation. Fight evil with good. Show the world that the answer to suffering, sickness and pain is not the evil of euthanasia but the merciful face of the Father revealed through our Christian charity. Fr. Richard Whalen Chaplain GRAND KNIGHTS MESSAGE Brother Knights and families: The season of Lent is upon us with Easter on the horizon. I d first like to thank everyone who came out to help and support the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper held at the St Michaels Parish Centre. Once again it was a great success due to everyone s efforts. Now let us think about Charity; the lesson of our First Degree and one of the practices of Lent, to bring us closer to God. Let s practice this throughout Lent through giving of our time, goods, and money; helping others and assisting in K of C charitable efforts, giving to Gleaners and St. Vincent DePaul Society, and contributions to Share Lent, Development and Peace, or our own Foundation, and any other worthy causes. Our next business meeting will be held on the 5 th Tuesday of March, the 29 th, to allow for members to attend the Mass of Chrism in Kingston on the 22 nd. 4 GENOA ASSEMBLY 0863 There is a slight change to the March 19 Dinner. Mass will now be held at St. Michael s Church at the 5 PM mass. I would ask that all Sir Knights and their wives sit together in one place at the mass. This will help to provide recognition of the Knights of Columbus and perhaps assist in the attaining of new members. The Knights will then proceed to Sans Souci Restaurant (back door off Riverside Parking Lot) for dinner which will remain at I hope that this does not cause an inconvenience to anyone but Fr Hood will be away on holidays at that time. The Worthy Master has advised that there is a change in the timing of the activities relating to the exemplification in May. Anyone that has not received a copy of the new schedule from me, please let me know and I will get one to you. The Worthy Master has also advised me that an election for the position of Master for our area must be held this year. It will be held at the Master s meeting on Saturday April 2 which will be held in Cornwall. If anyone is interested in the position, I would have to notify the Master in time to receive the Master s Application Package, have it completed along with the members bio and then return it to the Master by March 24. The Master will be applying for the position again this term. As stated earlier the 1 st District Assembly meeting will be held in Cornwall at the K of C hall 205 Amelia St. on April 2 nd from 1.00 to 3.00 pm. The cost for the lunch is $ Please let me know if you are planning to attend so I can advise the Master in order to ensure that they have enough food. Also, Our Assembly elections will be coming up in May ( nominations in April). If you are interested in one of the positions or know of someone who is, please be sure to nominate them or have someone nominate you. All positions are available for the election. I have also received tickets to the Seminarian Appreciation Dinner in South Mountain which will be held on Sunday August 7 th. 5 BELLEVILLE COLUMBUS CLUB NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Our Columbus Club will be holding its Annual General Meeting for 2016 at the end of our regular Council business meeting on Tuesday March 29 th. Report of activities, review of financial reports, and election of directors will take place at this time Brian Moloney: Recording Secretary Greetings to all Brothers: We are well into Lent and this time of cleansing and renewal. These forty days of standing firm against Satan while renewing our trust in the Lord. May we always keep in mind the commandment of charity. As Knights, we defend the widows and the orphans with generous service to our neighbor. Let the spirit of Christ work within us to bring goodness to others and continue our support to our Priests who lead us through the celebration of Mass. 6 Worthy Sir Knights Now is the time to recruit those new Sir Knights. The Exemplification package for the May 27 & 28 th Fourth Degree Exemplification in Kingston has been distributed to all District 1 Faithful Navigators. The Sir Knights and Ladies of Archbishop J. V. Cleary Assembly 0857 Kingston are busy with the preparations for what I am sure will be another successful Exemplification. The cost for our candidates is $70.00 which includes their initiation fee, social baldric and 4 th Degree lapel pin. Banquet tickets are $70.00 per person (candidates and/or members). A number of rooms have been blocked at the St. Lawrence College residence. Deadline for all candidate registration form 4 s and fees, banquet registration forms is May 1 st. This is also the deadline for the rooms. Note that all events with the exception of the Mass will be held at St. Lawrence College. Archbishop Brendan O Brien will celebrate the Mass at St. Mary s Cathedral. I look forward to seeing many of you in Kingston. Paul Vellarackal to Belleville. Fr. Paul is helping Fr. Whalen for a period of time at St. Michaels Parish. Fr. Paul became a 3rd Degree Knight at St. Gertrude Church, Bayville, Long Island, New York five years ago. We look forward to Fr. Paul attending our meetings whenever possible. We welcome Brother Sir Knights Guy Quance and William vanboxtel into our Council and Assembly. S/K Guy has transferred his membership in from Trenton and S/K William has transferred in from Bowmanville. S/K Guy is retired and is an Honorary Life member of our Council. S/K William works in Customer Service at HGS in Belleville. On a sad note Brother Harvey Murray passed away on December 15, Unfortunately we lost touch with Br. Harvey several years ago when his mail was being returned and his telephone was disconnected. I thank Bro. John Mc Ginnis for bringing this to my attention. 8 Membership Director's Report We held very successful Open Houses at Holy Rosary and at St.Michaels during the last two weekends of February. Thanks to all my Brother Knights who volunteered to assist in the Hospitality/Social part of the open houses. Special thanks to our Grand Knight Brother Brian for helping on both weekends. I can't thank all of you enough. This event exemplifies our core principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. Father Richard gave the best Homily about the Knights of Columbus that I have ever heard from any Priest in the last 25 years. Father repeated the same promo at all the Masses on February 27/28. I wish I had a tape recorder because I could have used it during our upcoming October membership drive. Many thanks Father Richard Whalen. When our Priests talk about the Knights - The Knights Win! We have one new candidate from Holy Rosary and a couple of hot prospects in the fire. We have two more candidates from St. Michael's with another 2 or 3 hot prospects from there also. As a result we will hold an Admissions Committee meeting on Tuesday March 8th prior to our planning meeting. We will start at 6:00 PM in our upstairs office. The sponsors must accompany their candidate to this meeting. Since most of us will be at the Chrism Mass in Kingston on our regular meeting night of Tuesday, March 22nd our regular Business meeting will be held on the following Tuesday March 29th. Prior to this meeting we will host a First Degree and so far we have 3 candidates. There will be a Third Degree on Sunday May 15th in Kingston. We have one candidate so far. If there happens to be a Second Degree between now and May 15th we will have even more candidates. The Star Council Award recognizes outstanding achievements in The Father McGivney (membership), Founder's (insurance), and Columbian and Star Council (activities/events) awards. If we can get a couple of more candidates between now and the end of June, we could very well achieve a Star Council Award that is long overdue. So please, don't give up your efforts in looking for more good Catholic gentlemen to join us. If you have not applied for any of the Knights Financial services all it takes is to open for a Tax Free Savings Account for $100 or $200. The K of C interest is higher than any of our local Banks. If you can do this, we will also achieve the Founders Award. So talk to our Worthy Insurance agent Brother Stephen Henderson at (h) (c) or via e- mail at: stephen.henderson@kofc.org We have already achieved our 4 events in each of the following: Council, Church, Community, Family and Youth events. The last leg is achieving the Star Council Award. To make a long story short, we have lots of time between now and June 30th to achieve all the requirements stated above, so let's get down to work and DO whatever it takes!
