7 Page P 7 October 2017 O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great king above all gods. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Psalm 95:1-3,6-7 Santa Fe is a singing church. Guests and members alike often remark on the enthusiasm and joy of our congregational hymns and praise songs. I pray that the spirit of praise will continue on and on as we grow and share God s blessings as a congregation. Hymn writer Fred Pratt Green wrote these beautiful words: When in our music God is glorified, and adoration leaves no room for pride, it is as though the whole creation cried: Alleluia! Let every instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always: Alleluia! Our wonderful Chancel Choir is always looking for new members. We have joyful experiences on Wednesday nights making music and enjoying Christian fellowship. Years ago I found these Advantages for Joining the Choir from another church s newsletter. Take a look; maybe one will strike your fancy: 1. You never have to worry about what to wear. 2. You have excellent seats and are assured a reserved seat for Christmas and Easter. 3. From your advantageous seat, you can smile at, gawk at, ignore and otherwise enjoy the rest of the people in the congregation. 4. The pastor is nearly always looking the other direction. 5. You re in a wonderful spot to see new members. 6. The cost for all these benefits? Just one evening a week (really, just about an hour). 7. Oh, yes, one more reason to join the choir: 8. You re a leader in the worship experience. We also look forward to great Fall and Holiday Seasons at Santa Fe. Here are some dates to remember: October 1 November 15 November 19 November 26 December 3 December 20 December 24 World Communion Sunday Church Thanksgiving Dinner at 6:00 p.m. Music on Santa Fe presents Kyle Dillingham in Concert at 6:30 p.m. CHRIST THE KING Sunday The 1 st Sunday of Advent / Hanging of the Greens at 11:00 a.m. Church Christmas Dinner A SERVICE OF LESSONS AND CAROLS presented by the Chancel Choir and Instrumentalists at 11:00 a.m. O come, let us adore Him. 9 Page P 9 October 2017 Hurricane Harvey Harvey Relief Mission Paul Iott - September 14 th - 22 nd, 2017 In Houston, last week I was blessed to see God s Grace evident in children still playing and laughing around piles of rubble. Young people working together across cultures to muck neighbors homes and elders freely sharing inspired wisdom with a kind spirit. The mucking was well underway when I arrived Friday morning, the locals were tired but enjoying a large company of volunteers from West Texas and San Antonio. It was great to see a friend from the 2016 Uganda mission team, Randy Willis, who is the Associate Pastor of City Life Church of Houston ( clchouston.com/ or They were in the middle of completing 50 to 100 home cleanups. With my years rebuilding with my family the pastors asked me to help build a plan with a few analytical church members. Chris Pate the Senior Pastor asked if I could document a simple repeatable home repair projects plan. On day one, five teams were sent out after a spiritual and safety send off from the church. At Joan s home the mucking team moved boxes to a truck going to storage and removed furniture. Everything damaged is sorted into three piles at the curb. After some liability paperwork, everyone puts on masks and gloves. Some carry hammers, prybars and sheet rock knifes, clean cuts are made on the wall at 4 foot to protect upper wall finishes. Furniture, sheetrock, wood trim, floors and insulation go into wheel barrows for the trip to the curb. Randy told me it was hardest for him when he had to console someone who was upset they cannot keep great grandma s family heirloom cloth chair. A few sealed hardwoods and plastics can be cleaned and saved with fans and dehumidifiers (which are in short supply). My assignment was to visit the owners of two homes northeast of Houston to assess and begin next steps. First visit was Coach Robert who was selected as a complete follow through for City Life Church of Houston. They want to bring this home back in a better working condition, there are issues with electrical, plumbing and long-term water damage. Coach showed me how he was ventilating and treating wet wood, even in the bedroom and bathroom he was still living in. It is dark to live with 2x4 s and black felt paper on every wall. Robert worked for years as a senior lab technician for Exxon polymer research, as a process operator/ inventor. Forty years later he works in his community with at risk youth. He gets up at 430 AM to catch the 5AM city bus to get to work teaching at 7:30, coach works out after class. We were blessed on my first visit to get his AC and ½ the power tuned back on, bare wires were trimmed, camped and taped. The aluminum wiring must be repaired with de-oxidizers and all outlets checked or replaced, this type of wire must be repaired to be safe. A plumbing assessment found waste pipes that are brittle. Sometime in the past the city replaced their part of the sewage pipes. Plumbing is time critical because we need to remove and reset a gas hot water heater so we can clean out the sheetrock behind the unit. We did a few hours of additional cleaning and sheetrock prep then sat under a rusty car port, which is actually a front porch, this is Robert s outside living (visiting) space. We talked about teaching and raising up young people in a Christ centered way, I was wearing my Proverbs 22:6 tee shirt. On another walk around, we talked about the sliding glass back door which is in bad shape. Robert said he was not expecting this to be done but he had hoped it could be bricked. That is not in my skill set but my Dad would have demolished the door, built a simple short wall with windows and outside siding. I was able to build draft work orders and have initial conversations with a professional electrician and plumber. They both bid work requesting Time and Materials for costs of $7,000-$11,000 plus $6,000 respectively. These prices are high for a DIY guy like me, but there is a good reason these two jobs license has a master professional level. There will be a big need for skilled tradesmen in this hurricane ravaged area for years as building supplies become available. One of the needs is for general contractors or old DIY people like me to help the church work with sub-contractors and tradesmen.

10 Page P 10 October 2017 Hurricane Harvey continued My top mission idea for non-construction teams, let's give people their yards back. After heavy trash is picked up, let's visit with yard tools. Help homeowners and neighbors rack small bits of trash to the street for packaging and removal then cut yards. It would be a good day to give a neighborhood their yards back. Another will be at the end, helping people after the construction to add furniture and household items. Some people asked why I was able to go help early. I was led to help because God gave me experience throughout my life helping my Dad and Mom with home repair and re-builds. Being raised on older Do It Yourself projects, most often with a tight budget. We always seemed to run into rot and mold that had already eaten away at hidden areas. A part of God s wonderful creation, I did not consider it fun work at the time. My second visit was with Tiphanie, a single mother with a teenage daughter and a disabled son. Her 1100 sq. ft. home was less than two years old and was in surprisingly good shape (constructed well), even though I was shocked by the neighborhood. Small homes and lots caused the piles of trash at the curb to be high and deep. Habitat for Humanity had 100 volunteers working the neighborhood, with Chevron. It turned out the Congresswomen for the area was walking through the neighborhood, and we had a team filming next door. As Tiphanie and I prepared her 2x4 s for sheetrock, removing nails and screws, we visited with Habitat. They said we were doing a very good job of clean up, but they recommended we cut the sheetrock above the shower. Once that was done Habitat removed the tub and shower walls. The next day I went back to clean out behind the tubs and mucked the final wet out of the house. After observing and working with multiple teams to continue cleaning and deconstruction at mid-week my deliverable was a 12-page narrative outline describing the steps which we thought would complete the first two long term recovery projects. This format helps me communicate my thought processes as well as the draft plan when team leads are too busy to meet. By the end of the visit we had a two-page version of Robert s reconstruction plan, with a How To/Safety document, team roles and responsibilities and a communication plan to help volunteers respond to questions from neighbors. I volunteered to be available as a phone consultant to help on the repair projects. My host Randy Willis is well known by my Uganda Mission team leader Tom Langdon, who tells me he has known Randy for many years. Randy asked me to go with him to visit a Cambodian Village built around a Buddhist Church. An international refugee community had built a self-sustained farming village. There were four retired Marines helping muck and prepare for repairs, they were uncertain how to test the soils and safely restart farming. On Monday, the church s day off, I visited an old friend who was flooded and he was able to find me contacts at Texas A&M. We knew they would have best practice to restart farm fields, not that common in Houston but a big issue in the country side. In short submerged crops must be removed down to the top of the root ball, the result can be composted. The plants in the ground should return quickly. The university said if there are dangerous levels of contaminates from the flood water the plants will not thrive. It felt really good to help them restart their communities food production. For additional information I suggest the CLC Houston web site and Facebook for a view of the mission in action. Randy reports they can make space for 75 missionaries able to help. I would be happy to talk with anyone about their ideas regarding how they think they can help. Sign up sheet in Narthex for Care packages for college students

11 Page P 11 October 2017 Poem Often in His family I sense such blessed PEACE, because of our Lord Jesus Christ Who is Himself our PEACE there may be sorrow round about and troubles that he shares, but as we are sitting near or far apart in chairs, aren t we blanketed with so many prayers? aren t we reminded of the One who bears these troubles and Who cares? and He draws us near, to hear we are L VED in One body we need not fear. Often in His family I sense such blessed PEACE and for all let thanksgiving, L VE, prayers not cease! All Saints Day Santa Fe will be remembering members and close family of our community that have passed away this year on Sunday, November 5th. Please contact the church office with the name, date of birth and date of release of any persons you wish to have lifted up on that day. Kitty Velasco

12 Santa F e Presbyterian Church 1603 N orth Santa F e A venue E dm ond, O K Mission What are CROP Hunger Walks? Neighbors walking together to raise funds to end hunger in their community and around the world. Together - with different ages, faiths and backgrounds - we raise money and awareness to end hunger, one step at a time. With 1,500 communities across the country walking each year, we are America's Hunger Walk. Last year, SFPC had 8 registered walkers (plus about more from SPFC who didn t register but walked to support us) who raised $745 for CROP Walk. This is a decrease from previous years, so the Mission Committee will be reaching out to all of the church to participate in the 2015 Walk for Hunger. Here s what we ask from YOU: Sign up to walk. Set aside 2 hours of your time on November 5, from 2:00-4:00. The Walk will be held in Mitch Park. Registration is in the Narthex. If you are not able to walk with us, please sign up to be a sponsor. Sign up in the Narthex or talk to Cindy Thomas. Ask family, friends, or other church members to sponsor your walk. Sponsors can choose how much they wish to contribute. Walkers: Collect your sponsor donations and place in your Registration Packet. Set a goal for how much you wish to raise/donate for CROP Walk. $50 can begin a community garden for families with a hoe, shovel and seeds. $110 can give emergency food supplies for a family of 5 for one month. $300 can provide 15 bios and filters that help prevent the spread of disease. $525 can provide seven raised planting beds with nutrient-rich soil and gardening tools
