3 Page 3 April 2014 Beyond the Pulpit Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. On March 17 th Santa Fe celebrated its 18 th anniversary as a chartered congregation. That may not seem like a big deal, but it could be more important than we realize. To make it 18 years in an era when 9 out of 10 new church developments fail is a laudable accomplishment. Certainly, by comparison, 18 years is not a tremendously long history. I was honored to participate in my home church s 300 th anniversary in 2011, and the first congregation I served will be celebrating its 275 th anniversary in a few years. Long and interesting histories to be sure, but so much of that history is lost. The stories that tell us about the people and events brought about the beginnings of those two churches are forgotten. This is sad, for I wonder what we could learn from them as we prepare to move into the third decade of ministry here at Santa Fe. Are the challenges we face the same challenges they faced? What stories might they share with us to inspire us to greater efforts in mission? Who were the interesting people and what humorous stories about each other could they tell us? As one who had aspired to teach history before the call to ministry, I am reminded of the sage advise of George Santayana who warned us, Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Although I prefer to think of it in this way, Those who refuse to remember the past, miss out on some great stories. With these thoughts in mind, we are just two years away from Santa Fe s 20 th anniversary. We are blessed to have so many charter members still among us, as well as the blessing of so many newer members. This gives us an opportunity to do a tremendous favor to the generations of Santa Fe family members that will follow us. Right now we need everyone to start writing down their stories and collecting pictures. We are looking for stories from the before the beginning of the church right up to last week. We want your stories describing the reasons you came to Santa Fe and perhaps why some people left. We need funny stories and sad stories, cautionary tales for posterity to read and stories that will inspire them. We want to share the things people did to help make Santa Fe what it is, and more importantly what God has done to make us who we are. So start sharing your stories and recording them. The Session, in preparation for the up-coming 20 th anniversary is forming a committee to plan the anniversary. If you would like to help us plan for this important and exciting celebration please speak with me. May the peace and blessings of God, the joy of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit be with you all, Mitchell Lee Miller. Celebrating 20 Years Santa Fe will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016 and it s not too early to start making plans. This is a significant milestone for our church, whether you are a charter member or a new member. To make this a memorable celebration, consider being part of the 2016 Santa Fe Anniversary Committee. We need ideas from everyone in the church for this to be a successful event. More information to come. Bruce Ackerman, Session Liaison to the 2016 Santa Fe Anniversary Committee

6 Page 6 April 2014 Traveling Mercies EASTER the perfect Come and See opportunity for us to extend an invitation to others to join us on this journey of faith! Several weeks ago I preached a sermon about the Samaritan Woman at the Well and her profound encounter with God Incarnate. Jesus breaks every boundary of expectation by extending an invitation to the woman. He asks her for water from Jacob s well, for he was thirsty and tired. What starts as an invitation for water became an amazing example of truth telling and transparency, ending with Jesus revealing His identity. Once realizing the full import of her encounter with the Messiah, she leaves her most prized possession to go and extend an invitation herself. She was about to break every boundary as well; she was about to become an unlikely evangelist. That s what people do who encounter the living God. For her heart, mind, and soul had been changed forever. The Samaritan woman extends three little words to the very folks in her city who despise her. Such is the way God works, taking the most unlikely, unprepared, unworthy to be His mouthpiece. We need not have a full understanding of faith to share what we know. Remember, the Samaritan is a brand new believer. Like the woman, we must simply be willing to extend the invitation Come and See. God will do the rest; He will take it from there, for ultimately HE is the one who transforms hearts. My sermon was a challenge for you to depict your face as you picture an unlikely evangelist. Easter is the perfect time to trust the man who offers living waters! Extend those three little words to friends and family Come and See so they may choose to trust for themselves in the RISEN Lord! INDEED HE IS RISEN! Love and blessings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus! 7 Page 7 April 2014 Christ the Lord is Risen Today! "I am the First and the Last; I am the Living One. I was dead, and behold, I am alive for ever and ever. Revelation 1:17,18 What a glorious truth to ponder Jesus is not the Great I WAS, but rather the Great I AM! He is not only a historical fact but a present day living reality. Our Christian faith rests upon the truth that Jesus Christ rose from the grave and is now seated at the Father s right hand. The great hymn of faith, Christ the Lord is Risen Today has been one of the Church s most popular Easter hymns since it was first written by Charles Wesley after his heart-warming encounter with the Living Lord in The first Wesleyan Chapel in London was a deserted iron foundry, and became known as the Foundry Meeting House. This hymn was written by Charles for the first service in that chapel. Following his encounter with Christ, Charles began writing numerous hymns on every phase of the Christian experience some 6,500 in all. It has been said that the hymns of Charles Wesley clothed Christ in flesh and blood, and gave Christians a belief they could easily grasp, embrace with personal faith, and if necessary, even die for. Charles once said, If all of our eternity is to be realized on this side of the grave, we are hopeless and to be pitied (I Corinthians 15:19), but for the Christian, the resurrection assures us of God s tomorrow. This anticipation makes it possible to live joyfully today, regardless of life s circumstances. Read and reflect on these great words by Charles Wesley: Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say:alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia! Sing, ye heavens and earth reply: Alleluia! Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Dying once He all doth save, Alleluia! Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia! Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia! Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia! Death in vain forbids Him rise, Alleluia! Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia! Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia! Following our exalted Head, Alleluia! Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia! Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia! The message of the resurrection is to come and see to personally experience the transforming power of the living Christ, then to go and tell. Let s carry this great hymn of triumph with us, as we experience a glorious Easter season together. O Come, Let Us Adore Him! In God s Love, Tim G.

8 Santa Fe Presbyterian Church 1603 North Santa Fe Avenue Edmond, OK Missions March Missions Project Urban Mission s Summer SPARK Program The project is Urban Mission s Summer SPARK program (Support Program of Art and Reading for Kids), a day-long kids program during the summer vacation period from school. The focus of the summer program is reading. Last year, the kids involved in the summer program IMPROVED their reading scores over the summer months, at a time when many kids lower their reading scores. The kids come from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The OKC Metropolitan Library system sends a staff member to share books with the kids. Reading tutors are needed to help read with the kids during the summer months. The summer program also includes some field trips to places of interest. Here is the link for more details: We encourage members and SFPC groups (i.e., Sunday School classes and Circles) to donate money towards sponsorship of a child who attends this summer program. There will be an Easter Tree in the narthex with eggs in various dollar amounts for sponsorships. Please consider taking an egg to male a donation and give a child an opportunity to participate in the SPARK program.
