3 Page P 3 January 2016 Beyond the Pulpit Greetings and may the grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord be with you all. The new year is nearly upon us. So it is normal to look ahead and wonder, what lies ahead in this coming year? Most of it is pure speculation, but there are a few things to keep in mind as we look at 2016 here at Santa Fe Presbyterian Church. First and foremost, March 17 will mark the 20 th anniversary of the official founding of Santa Fe Presbyterian Church! I hear some of you, what the big deal? I have shoes older than that. Well friends it is a big deal. In this day and age, for any church to make it to their 20 th anniversary is a big accomplishment. Researchers have found that roughly 33 percent of churches fail in the first 5 years, more of them fail in the second 5 years. We are doing pretty well. To put it in another perspective, consider that Santa Fe is the last new church started by Indian Nations Presbytery, in those 20 years while most churches have declined and few have closed, Santa Fe has grown to be one of the larger churches in the Presbytery. Certainly we have much to be thankful for. God has blessed this community with many wonderful people that have done so much to bring us to where we are today. There are a number of events planned throughout 2016 to celebrate this milestone. I do hope you will join us. But 2016 and the 20 th anniversary is not just about looking backward in celebration. This is the year to give greater thought to where God is leading us in the next 20 years. As we celebrate our past we will also begin moving forward with plans for the future. Beginning to move forward is every bit as exciting as looking back, and perhaps even more important. Moving ahead is the surest sign that what we have done in the past has been worth the effort and that we are healthy and listening for God to speak to us. Happy new year everyone, and get ready for a year of celebration, joy, excitement, challenge and new beginnings. And if I may borrow a phrase from Pete Townsend, I think 2016 is gonna be a good year. May the peace and blessings of God, the joy of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit be with you all, Mitchell Lee Miller Santa Fe Presbyterian Church Elders Bruce Ackerman Craig Cole Paul Iott Martin McNeese Don Dage Cathy Hansen Jim Rule David Lautenschlager Charlotte Langley Mike Reed Ann Stewart Don Sterne Officers Deacons Greg Spahr, Clerk of Session Leigh Miller Robyn Spahr Brenda Underwood Kathy Brock Brenda Underwood Brian Champlin Melody Mckitrick Tracie McCall David Van Nostrand Christian Wright Staff Pastor Rev. 4 Page P 4 January 2016 Psalm 90 Psalm 90 God s Eternity and Human Frailty A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling-place * in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn us * back to dust, and say, Turn back, you mortals. 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; 6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. 7 For we are consumed by your anger; by your wrath we are overwhelmed. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. 9 For all our days pass away under your wrath; our years come to an end * like a sigh. 10 The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span * is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. 11 Who considers the power of your anger? Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due to you. 12 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. 13 Turn, O LORD! How long? Have compassion on your servants! 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. 16 Let your work be manifest to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favour of the Lord our God be upon us, and prosper for us the work of our hands O prosper the work of our hands!

5 Santa Fe E xpressions Page 5 January 2016 Caroling Thanks We had so much fun and fellowship when about 30 folks went Christmas caroling on Dec. 18th. We especially want to thank Pam and Warren Shoulders for hosting an after party of snacks and drinks and letting us tour their beautiful home. Carolyn Barton wants all of you to know how much it meant to her to see her church family at her home singing Christmas carols.

6 Page P 6 January 2016 Christmas Breakfast with Santa Breakfast with Santa was another great hit with lots of un for all the kids and adults. There was photos with Santa, Christmas crafts, balloons creations, a Christmas story, the kids got to shop at the Christmas store for family members, and do not forget a delicious breakfast! Thank you for all the help from all the volunteers!!!

7 Page P 7 January 2016 Santa Fe Is Having A 20th Anniversary Party and You're Invited! 20th Anniversary Q: What happened on July 17, 1994? A: The first meeting of the New Church Development Task Group was held, which set the stage for the creation of Santa Fe Presbyterian Church. This bit of trivia and much more of the history of Santa Fe will be shared in the New Year as we celebrate the church's 20th anniversary. The 2016 Santa Fe Anniversary Committee has been meeting and several ideas have been discussed, including a table with displays on the history of the church, a calendar, a banquet, and a community-wide picnic. All events will be held at the church to give all members of the congregation a chance to not only attend, but participate in the activities. The anniversary committee is being spearheaded by Rev. Mitchell Miller, Bruce and Kathy Ackerman, Ellaine Amend, Darry and Edith Carlstone, John Huffman, Bev Mackey, Martin and Martha McNeese, Don and Anna Sterne, and Cindy Thomas Anyone who wants to be a member of this committee is invited to attend the meetings. The next meeting will be January 9th, when the committee sets up the display in the Narthex. If you have any items that could be included in the display, contact one of the committee members. If you would like the item returned to you, make sure it is clearly labeled. This is an important milestone in the life of Santa Fe and it should be a fun time for everyone. Grandmother Shower Santa Fe hosted a grandmother shower and luncheon on behalf of Conner and Beth s 1st child, Melody s grandson, as both Conner and Beth were ill. Grandma Shower Jan Ingerson is going to be a grandma! The fellowship committee is going to have a lunch after church on January 10 th to celebrate her son, Matt and daughter-inlaw, Renee s good news about having a baby boy!! They are registered at Babies R Us and their nursery theme is jungle animals. EVERYONE is invited to join us. Questions, refer to Pam Roney or Martha Need a ride?? Deacons The Deacons have a new program If you need a ride to church, a doctor s appointment, the grocery store please call the church office to get connected to a fellow church member who will provide that ride. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. Teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:1,2,12 Another new year is upon us what a challenge! It is especially challenging in light of God s Word that shows us our days upon the earth are rapidly passing. Maybe we need to pray with the psalmist for a heart of wisdom that will enable us this year to live each new day in a way that brings all glory to God was a wonderful year of music and worship at Santa Fe, especially during the Advent and Christmas seasons. The Hanging of the Greens on November 29 was, as always, an amazing service. The children of Santa Fe did a wonderful job presenting O Christmas Tree and leading us in some joyful songs of the Christmas season on December 16! The Chancel Choir and the Youth Bells presented a beautiful service, A Festival of Lessons and Carols, on December 20 with our guest musicians in the Chamber Orchestra. Mustard Seed and Chancel Choir rehearsals will resume on Wednesday, January 6, with the Chancel Choir at 6:45 and Mustard Seed at 8:00. We will begin Kids Club again on Wednesday, January 13 at 4:30 p.m. I hope some of our new kids who have not attended so far will join us in The YOUTH MUSIC GROUP for all middle school and high school you will also start back that day at 5:00 p.m. and YOUTH BELLS at 5:30 p.m. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016!!
