2 Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. - Psalm 119:105 Daniel 1:5-19 The king assigned them food and wine from the king s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king s service. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile. Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, but the official told Daniel, I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you. MY NOTES: We welcome everyone including those who are single, married, divorced, crying newborns, tired parents, and doting grandparents. We welcome those who are just browsing and those who know every hymn and praise song ever written. We welcome those who think the earth is flat, can t spell, or because grandma is in town you wanted to go to church. You have found a perfectly imperfect church filled with perfectly imperfect people who worship our perfect Lord. First time guests - please pickup a welcome gift at the welcome desk in the lobby. Once again, welcome! Practice The Pause When in doubt, pause. When angry, pause. When stressed, pause. And, when you pause Pray! 3 Meet Our New District Superintendent Hudson First UMC is now part of the North Central District and Rev. June Edwards is the District Superintendent. June Edwards is a highly respected pastor in our conference," Bishop Carter said. "She has strong gifts in administration and teaching, and has given remarkable leadership most recently at First UMC in Lakeland and on the Board of Ordained Ministry. A sixth generation Floridian and life-long Methodist, Rev. Edwards has served three appointments over the last 20 years in the Florida Conference-Forest UMC (Silver Springs), Druid Hills UMC (Ocala) and most recently as one of the Associate Pastors at First UMC, Lakeland. She and her husband, Steve Edwards, have been married for 39 years and have three daughters-margie (Greg) Kurtz, Rachel (Johnny) Gibbs and Emily Edwards and three grandchildren-johnny, Waylon and Ellie. June is a graduate of the University of Florida (BA Education) and Asbury Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity). She has served the church at both District and Conference levels: North Central District Mission and Church Extension, North Central District Committee on Ministry, Conference Standing Rules Committee, the Advisory Board of Shade and Fresh Water, Board of Ordained Ministry and the Conference Congregational Vitality Committee. HURRICANE HARVEY As we have watched the tragedy unfold in Texas and now the rain in Louisiana -- many of you have asked what you can do to help. First, pray for those impacted. Pray also for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) and our United Methodist Churches who are in the impacted communities and all of the agencies and partners responding to those in need. Second, give generously to UMCOR Disaster Response Advance # ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of your donation will go to help those affected by Harvey. Over this past year, the Florida Conference has received $1.4 million dollars from UMCOR to assist with recovery from Hurricanes Hermine (Labor Day last year) and Matthew (one month later). We received these grants because churches like yours gave generously to UMCOR. Make your checks payable to Hudson First UMC and write UMCOR in the memo field. If you are giving cash, please write UMCOR on the envelope. Thank you. YOUTH REACHING OUT TO THE HOMEBOUND This summer Joan Lilly and our youth, assisted by Justin LeFort, prepared Love Boxes and delivered them to our Homebound. Bill LeFort drove the bus to the various locations so that the youth could personally deliver the boxes and visit with our homebound folks. On an ongoing basis, the youth also keep in touch with the Homebound by writing monthly notes letting them know what they are doing and that our Homebound are not forgotten. By reaching out to our Homebound, the youth are learning the importance of community within the Church and in the area they live. Let our youth know how important they are to the Church family. Kudos to our youth!

6 Don s Desk by Don Tomko, Program Director September marks the end of Summer, and Fall ushers in school bells. For me, Back-To-School brings back memories of buses, books, and backpacks and the 3 R s Reading, Riting, and Rithmetic. As adults, we may find ourselves writing less and doing arithmetic less, but we should actually be reading more. And the book that we should be reading is the number one best-selling book of all time The Bible! Proverbs 4:20-21 states give attention to My words; incline your ear to My sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart. If you read this verse closely, you will see that this is not optional. God does not say, if you want to or if you have time. God says, give, incline, do not, and keep. These are commands. George Müller, who lived in the 1800s, cared for about 10,000 orphans in total in his five large orphanages. But he never allowed his huge responsibility to take him away from the Word of God. He said that every day, he would set aside time to study the scriptures until his inner man was happy in the Lord. When Martha complained to Jesus that her sister Mary had left her to serve alone (Mary was sitting at Jesus feet and hearing His Word), Jesus defended Mary by saying, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:41 42) So Jesus says that one thing is needed. Martha was busy preparing food while Mary was feeding on Spiritual food Jesus Word the Word of God! We need to be in God s Word. Beginning September 5th, we are offering a New Testament Discipleship Class on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. It s a great way to get into God s Word with other church friends. Friends, you will not lose out when you take time to sit down and listen to God s Word. I took the Old Testament Discipleship class in the Fall and I got so much out of it! My prayer is that you would get to know Jesus better. One thing is needed - take time to meditate on God s Word. Sign-up for the New Testament Discipleship Class. Set up a date with God. You will get to know God better and you will be blessed! I guarantee it! Update from Staff Parish Relations Committee Hudson First United Methodist Church has been presented with a challenge. A gift of $10,000 has been offered by a generous member, to help financially with the start of a Contemporary Worship service. This is a matching gift of up to $10,000. Please give generously. Part of this money would be used to pay the salary of a part-time Contemporary worship leader. This position is an important part of the overall worship experience for this service. SPRC is looking for a young man or woman who has a passion and love for Christ and has had previous experience with family oriented contemporary worship services. And yes, this person will need to play guitar. Pastor Jerry will deliver the message during the Contemporary service with the worship leader coordinating the service along with leading music and prayer. This is a very important time in our Church s life. This service will be targeted to reach out to young families in our communities. Sharing with them Christ s love, His Word and Grace. On behalf of the Staff Parish Relations Committee I challenge all of us, Hudson First UMC s church family, to give what you can. To collectively meet the match proposed by this donor. To be a part of extending the life of our church for, filling our church with those younger families who will carry on God s work and love in our community for many years to come. Please prayerfully consider this challenge and if you have any questions, feel free to contact myself or Pastor Jerry. Blessings, Nancy Neumar, SPRC Chairperson
