2 Welcome to worship! Here in Florida spring cleaning includes preparing for hurricane season. We know life has unplanned and unwanted storms. Allow God to prepare you this morning to weather those storms. Make new friends and deepen your relationship with God, so the anchor will hold in spite of the storms. Once again, welcome! HEAVEN that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Singing (Revelation 15:3) They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: Great and marvelous are Your ways, O King of the saints! Worship (Revelation 5:9) And they sang a new song, saying: You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, The Holy Spirit s Dwelling Place (Genesis 1:2) The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Serving (Revelation 22:3) And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. Plenty of Room (John 14:13) Mansion with many rooms And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Leading (2 Timothy 2:12a If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. Fellowship (John 14:3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. Eating (Revelation 2:17) He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it. Laughter (Luke 6:21c) Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. HEAVEN IS A REAL PLACE: The Father s Dwelling Place (Psalms 33:13) The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. The Son s Dwelling Place (Acts 1:11) who also said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven. (Revelation 21) An enormous city filled with people. We Will Know Each Other (1 Corinthians 13:12) For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. What We Will Do in Heaven Learning (Ephesians 3:18-19) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; Please lift your neighbors in prayer Practice The Pause When in doubt, pause. NOT HEALED, BUT WHOLE While researching America s Prosperity Gospel movement, Kate Bowler was saddened by its implications namely that God is present in people s triumphs but not their suffering, and that every aspect of life is either your fault or your reward. When Bowler was diagnosed with stage IV cancer at age 35, the prosperity-minded messages of wellwishers made cancer seem like a punishment. In Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I ve Loved), Bowler asks: What would it mean for Christians to give up that little piece of the American Dream that says, You are limitless? Everything is not possible. The mighty Kingdom of God is not yet here. What if rich did not have to mean wealthy, and whole did not have to mean healed? What if being people of the gospel meant that we are simply people with good news? God is here. We are loved. It is enough. BOY SCOUT TRIP 86 SUMMER CAMP! Proceeds from various activities such as Spaghetti Suppers and Pancake Breakfasts are used to defray the expenses of summer camp which enables our Scouts to attend. Thank you for your continued support! 4
5 The Encouragers by Ruth Lott and Betsy Triznadel Thursday, July 12th, Don Tomko, our Program Director, will lead the Encouragers discussion on Complicated Deaths as we continue our study on Experiencing Grief. Thursday, July 26th, Mariann Ogilvie, a former Hospice nurse, will lead the discussion for the Encouragers as we discuss Handling Special Occasions. Join us at 10am in Room CE10 if you are experiencing grief of any kind. Darrell s descant by Darrell Day, Worship Director Oh, how things have changed from the days when my parents would take us on Sunday evenings to the homes of missionary or pastor friends. These nights would often end with everyone singing together, even though some of us with more dubious musical giftings could make the whole affair excruciating. But it was something, and something special. Perhaps the lessthan-subtle changes between those days and now bear witness to how we digest music differently a change that s made its way into our churches. It seems our society s progress has played a role in the end of congregational singing. Right? Wrong! Congregational singing is far from dead, mainly because it s connected to a source of life higher than cultural trends or modern comparisons. Even so, it receives less attention and adulation than it should and there are several reasons. First, people tend to be attracted to larger churches where the performance of music approximates the professional; in principle, there s nothing wrong with that. Second, the music in most churches tends to be so loud that the congregation simply cannot hear itself sing. Third, smaller churches with less ability to produce professional-sounding music tend to minimize singing altogether, so as to minimize embarrassment or perceived weakness. Congregational singing is far from dead, mainly because it s connected to a source of life higher than cultural trends or modern comparisons. But now is the moment to re-embrace the crucial role of congregational singing in our churches. Singing is an act of obedience; we gather and sing because we re called to. Like telling the truth. Like loving our wives and our children. Like loving our neighbor as ourselves. These may seem like bold statements, but consider this: Singing is a real and tangible expression of loving the Lord with our whole hearts and our whole selves, and loving our neighbor as ourselves. Singing is also a privilege, a foretaste of heaven. After all, one day in the future every tribe, language, nation, and people will sing as one congregation before the throne of the risen Lamb. Until then, we find a microcosm of that day in the unimpressive form of congregational worship. As we anticipate the matchless glories of heaven, there s immeasurable value in our singing together on earth. Let s sing like we mean it because we do! 5
