3 3 Veteran, retired physician still a teacher to others He may have served in the Navy during the Vietnam War era, but the battle that retired anesthesiologist Dr. Robert S. Crumrine can t seem to forget is the one he fought against infant and child mortality. I got tired of children dying following surgery. It goes back to the fact that you can t treat babies like little adults, said the 83-year-old Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home resident, recounting his early career. Crumrine served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserve from As chief of pediatrics in the Dependents Clinic and Dispensary in Little Creek, Virginia, the former lieutenant estimates that he cared for more than 300 babies and children a month during that time. Dr. Robert S. Crumrine was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from and served as the chair of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Georgia from Read more at Denise Parrish Vet Turns 100 On Armistice Day Augusta, Ga (WJBF) - David Gardiner is one of the greatest generation. A World War II vet celebrating a special day. "He turns 100 years old today. He's tough, he's durable, self effacing gentleman," said his son Cliff. Here on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day marking the end of the first World War, World War II vet David Gardiner is celebrating his 100th birthday, "Lucky man I got back alive," David said. Gardiner was an US Army soldier in WWII, taking part in the important liberation of the Philippines. His memory of that isn't one of celebration, or gloating at the defeat of an enemy. "I was just glad we were coming home, that's all it meant to me, it was over," he said. That's David Gardiner's character for most of his 100 years, he was there in the Pacific helping to defeat tyranny, but he was just doing his job, a trait common for people of his generation. "They learned lessons of durability and strength and determination and not complaining," said Cliff. He's been around almost as long at Armistice Day, so this veteran has knowledge when it comes to armed conflicts. "War is a waste of time, people ought to be able to get along," David said. For the times we didn't get along we're lucky to have people like David Gardiner. His son says when David was born his mother called him her Armistice Baby.

7 7 The Honor Flights One Last Mission Grovetown High School Congressman Rick Allen and Jody Hice Occupa onal Therapy Students Provide Sensory Kit Augusta University s Occupational Therapy Department sent a team of five OT students to develop a Sensory Box Protocol to assist our residents who may self-calm with varied tactile, olfactory or auditory stimuli which the individual can explore on their own or with staff guidance. Taylor Hazlewood, Jenna Johnson, Aaron Kirkpatrick, Carly Pogson and Carolina Smith presented Georgia War s 4th floor unit with a sensory box filled with fidget cubes, tactile bracelets, stress ball, sensory-tactile balls, hand rollers, sensory glove and board, and a weighted lap blanket. These objects allow residents to seek out and accept the stimulation they feel most calming and comforting on a highly individualized basis. The residents enjoy the benefit of seeking stress relief, a more relaxed attitude and greater acceptance of peers and the stimulation of a busy unit. Our administrators, Carlton Deese and Julia Eveker, along with our medical director, Dr. Nidhi Gulati, had the opportunity to try out the sensory items and reported decreased stress as well as feeling calm. Staff and residents are grateful for the time and effort these students gave for the benefit of our facility.
8 Chaplain s Corner 8 The Greatest of Gi s A friend asked, What was the best Christmas present that you ever received? Three gift stories came immediately to mind. The first gift story was from Christmas Eve at the age of 7 or 8. My family was returning from midnight mass when my father casually asked my mother if they should let my sister and I open our presents when we got home. This, of course, was if Santa had come while we were away. There was that moment of suspense at this unheard-of idea, waiting to hear if my mother would agree. And when she did, we could not wait to get home. That car trip seemed to last for hours. When we walked in the door, the only lights on were the multicolored strings of Christmas tree lights. Under the glow of those beautiful lights was a slot car track, set up and ready to go for the 2 of us. It was a gift that neither of us had even thought about much less asked for, but we were delighted to receive. To this day, I still don t know how Santa was able to set up that race track while we were at church. The second story was the Christmas that I asked for a 10-speed racing bicycle. You know, the kind with the skinny tires and the ram horn curved handle bars. Christmas morning, there was my bright yellow bike in the living room. I could not wait to get it outside and take it for a ride, but I had to wait. We had a white Christmas that year and several inches of snow had fallen. The roads were all covered with ice and snow. In the frozen waste land of Michigan, this meant that I would have to wait for some time before I would be able to take that ride. The icy roads lasted that winter until late February. It was over two months before that bicycle was taken out for its first ride! The third story has to do with a gift that my wife Pam gave me several years ago. It is one of my most treasured possessions. It is a small wooden box. On the lid is an engraved plaque reading So you will always find your way back. Inside the box is a compass. It can usually be found on the headboard of our bed, often buried behind a stack of books but I always know where it is. I don t have to see it or touch it to experience the message of unconditional love that it represents for me. In fact, I only look at it once or twice a year. It is enough just to know that it is there. In reflecting on these gift stories, I see parallels to God s many gifts to us in his grace and his Son. Like the undeserved gift of God s grace, the race track was given without even asking. The racing bike is an illustration of the gifts that God has given that we have yet to fully realize; to see Jesus face to face with all of you and all the saints. The best is yet to come. The wooden box symbolizes the gift of the Holy Spirit. There dwells within each of us the love of Jesus in the form of the Holy Spirit. We don t need to see it to know that it is there. It will always be a part of us and as the engraving recalls, the Holy Spirit will always lead me to God. Merry Christmas to each of you and your families. May you receive the gift you most desire. Chaplain Larry Jesion
9 9 Chaplain's Corner in Memory of: Ruby Kleinrath William Penn Griffin Pollard Thomas Tobias An Old Soldier s Prayer I have fought when others feared to serve. I have gone where others failed to go. I've lost friends in war and strife, Who valued Duty more than love of life. I have shared the comradeship of pain. I have searched the lands for men that we have lost. I have sons who served this land of liberty, Who would fight to see that other stricken lands are free. I have seen the weak forsake humanity. I have heard the traitors praise our enemy. I've seen challenged men become even bolder, I've seen the Duty, Honor, Sacrifice of the Soldier. Now I understand the meaning of our lives, The loss of comrades not so very long ago. So to you who have answered duties siren call, May God bless you my son, may God bless you all. Lewis Millett
