3 3 VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER Our annual Volunteer Appreciation gala was held in our Courtyard this year with Morrison s catering the BBQ. A special thank you to all our Volunteers for their devotion and continued support. We would be unable to provide many of our activities without YOU! 4 4 Out and About Georgia War OUR ACTIVITEIS IN FULL SWING AHA Fund Raiser Awards Congratulations to the American Heart Team: Stacey McGaney and Crystal Allen (Co Captains), Laurie Cordaro, Carlton Deese, Sarah Jane ElLaissi, Lisa Hadden, Patricia MacDonald, Sharon Neely, Beth Scott and Henry Williams for earning 3 awards for the 2017 American Heart Walk Fundraising Campaign. Georgia War earned the honors of Top Fundraising Division, Division Exceeded Goal, and Top Fundraising Team. Thanks to all Georgia War staff, residents and families! 4th Floor Penny War Champ Sub Sandwich Party Congratulations the 4th floor American Heart Team for winning the 2017 Penny Wars competition! They celebrated their victory with a Sub Sandwich party on the unit. This is the 3rd year in a row that the 4th floor has won the Penny Wars competition. Congratulations to all residents, staff, and families!

8 Chaplain s Corner 8 Thin Places Several years ago, a friend shared the concept of thin places with me. In the theology of the Celtic Christian tradition of Ireland and Scotland, the heavenly/spiritual realms exist side by side and it is understood that there are places in which the separation of these realms are so thin that we can catch glimpses through to the other side; as if a sheer veil were the only thing creating a boundary between. These points where the separation is so close that the spiritual and the earthly seem to exist as one, are known as thin places. A few weekends ago, I went to a clergy retreat at one of my favorite places on earth, Honey Creek. Honey Creek is the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia retreat center located on the salt marshes near Waverly, GA. In addition to lodging and meeting facilities, the retreat center has acres of space for camping and outdoor recreation from nature trails, to fishing and canoeing on the creek, to disk golf. Throughout the year many events take place here: summer camp for the children, various conferences, spiritual retreats, etc. For me, Honey Creek is one of the thin places. It was there that I first discovered my faith. Whenever I arrive on the grounds, I can feel my spirit begin to soar. It is as if I am reliving that moment which was so critical to my faith journey. I feel closer to God there than anywhere else. The chapel at Honey Creek is a small A-frame structure with clear glass on every side through which the surrounding trees and the creek can be viewed. It is a lovely space to worship. There is a large crucifix containing red stained glass suspended above the altar. The rising morning sun illuminates the red glass. Through the altar window, the creek shoreline and the salt marsh spread out as far as the eye can see. It is quite stunning. As I sat and prayed, reflecting on my visit and my impending ordination, I looked through the glass and saw that there were several signs posted along the banks of the creek. The signs read, DANGER, Restricted Area. I thought that the message of the signs was so appropriate for what I was feeling. It was as if a message was sent to me, visible in this thin place. The message was this: The world can be a place of many dangers; many of which are visible through the windows of our safe places, our thin places. We need our thin places to encourage us, embolden us, shelter us, and to revive us in order that we might face the dangers awaiting us in life. -Chaplin Jesion
