1 Highlights May 31, 2015 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

3 Graduation 2015 Are you or someone in your family with a Highlands connection graduating from High school, university or a college or trades program this year? If so, we want to know so we can acknowledge this accomplishment at our worship service on Sunday June 14. Send an with your grad s name, program graduating from, their Highlands connection, and future plans to sandi.parker@highlandsunited.org. Mark graduate in the subject line. Please also let Sandi know if your grad will be attending the service on June 14. We will print the information in Highlights, and for grads who can be with us on June 14 honor them in the service. HIGHLANDS CHURCH LIBRARY During May and June the library will feature books about families. My Mum is Excellent by Nick Butterworth JFBUT Features a mum who is a brilliant artist, she can balance on a tightrope, she can swim like a fish, do amazing stunts on a bike and she can tame wild animals... in fact, there's very little this astounding mum can't do. 4 Imagine a world where every girl owned at least one dress! Dress a Girl Around the World is part of the Hope 4 Women International organization, a nondenominational independent Christian organization. Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, Dress A Girl Around the World provides dresses for little girls in developing countries. Dresses are made by church groups and community volunteers using a simple standard pattern. Each dress has a Dress a Girl label, is hand delivered and the smiles are endless! For more information about Dress a Girl, visit their website at: To date, over 300,000 dresses have been delivered to over 81 countries. People from the United States, Canada, Uganda, the UK, Philippines, Australia, Sweden, Costa Rica, South Africa, Germany, Norway, Okinawa, Japan, and Hong Kong continue to make dresses. We had an initial sewing bee at Highlands last weekend and made close to 20 dresses. If you re interested in being part of the next sewing bee, contact Carol Smith in the Church Office. 6 Helping Hasna to Highlands! Hasna Mohamed, our 27 year old sponsored Oromo refugee, arrives in Vancouver on Wednesday, 27 May 2015! We now urgently need: A Small Apartment to rent in a family house or a Room in an all-female household Volunteers to spend time with Hasna, supporting her life here. Your generous Financial Donations towards Hasna s first year of Canadian living costs Donation forms are available Sundays at the Action Table or weekdays from the Church Office. Tax receipts will be issued for your kind donations. Oromo Fundraising Lunch! Sunday, 14 June 2015 (after 10:00 am service) All are Welcome! Tasty Oromo Foods Silent Auction Oromo and Ethiopia Info As a fundraiser, this lunch will be paid for differently than the usual Second Sunday Lunches. We will ask for donations, rather than the charge for food cost-recovery and Highlands will give tax receipts for all donations beyond the basic cost of lunch. Enjoy great food and camaraderie as you Help Hasna to Highlands! Oromos consider their food distinct from the predominant Ethiopian culture. We ll present our best renditions of Oromo cuisine, to suit available Canadian produce and local taste buds. Please visit the Action Table for Sign-Up Lists for lunch volunteers. 6

7 Welcome to Highlands, Hasna! Hasna's flight arrived on time at Vancouver Airport on Wednesday May 27. After 24 hours of straight travel, she arrived with her beautiful smile and 3 large suitcases, to be greeted by Kumu, Marilyn and 2 volunteer Oromo translators -Rosa and Hamza and their 2 year old son Ammar. Hasna seems very happy to be in Canada and wants to learn English and get a job as soon as possible. She speaks Oromo, Anharic, Arabic and some English. Marilyn feels Hasna understands more English than she can speak and says she really tries! Hasna will come to Highlands on Sunday for us to welcome her. 7

8 Highlands United Church Congregational Meeting Please be advised that there will be a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, June 7 th, 2015 after the 10:00 am worship service. Agenda will include the following: (1) Review from the Building Committee and discussion of next options. (2) Congregational approval of nominations to the Leadership Board, Chair of the Finance Committee and Presbytery. 8

10 Community News The Universal Gospel Choir invites you to 2 performances of uplifting, joy-filled choral music to inspire a better world through singing! Soulstice 2015 Make a Better World promises a legendary musical experience for the whole family. Under the leadership of renowned choral director Lonnie Delisle, the UGC's 70-voice community choir will raise the roof with a rousing repertoire of traditional gospel favourites combined with pop classics, and a diverse collection of spiritual tunes from all around the world. First United needs donations of a number of hand-held musical and percussion instruments for our Friday morning music program. If you have anything you can donate ANYTHING from bongos to whistles to gut buckets to castanets, please call Keely at GOLF TOURNAMENT MAY 25: By all accounts the 8th Annual Golf Tournament for the Homeless was a smashing success! We don t have final numbers yet, but things look great and we ll have an update soon. DID YOU KNOW? First United is thrilled to announce that our Tax Coordinator and her team of volunteers have processed an amazing 4,588 tax returns for low-income people so far in 2015, helping individuals and families live better lives 10 as a result.
